Reflection on Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth” Al Gore begins his film “An Inconvenient Truth” by defining global warming and how it affects our planet. He states that most people believe, “[t]he earth is so big that we can’t possibly have a lasting impact on the earths environment.” Gore then briefly explains the science behind global warming. Next, he brings in examples of people and places that are being affected by global warming. The most striking affect is that 40% of the world population relies on melting glaciers for water that will disappear in the next half century. Indeed, we are in a significant warming trend. In fact, carbon dioxide (CO2) never before reached above 300 parts per million but it is so high that it is off the charts. Gore then discusses how global warming raises ocean temperatures and how this creates storms and other issues. One of these issues is the Arctic ice cap shrinking. Gore declares that, “It has diminished by 40% in the last forty years.” This is problem because the ice cap plays an important role in reflecting sun’s rays backing into space. Next, a study performed in the Netherlands found that global warming is shifting the seasons and causing problems for migratory birds. Furthermore, the ice shelves in Antarctica are breaking.
