The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is one of the many agencies that handle an array of healthcare departments as well as research. The DHHS caters to citizens of all nationalities, race, and ethnicities. The DHHS focus is to protect the health of all Americans and providing the highest level of human services, especially for those who are least able to help themselves. The Public Health Service is divided into 42 subdivisions (Department of Health and Human Services, 2007). Structure
The DHHS is structured by department and specialties where day-to-day operations and responsibilities cover an enormous amount of activities. This includes, health and social science research, preventing disease, including immunization services, assuring food and drug safety, Medicare (health insurance for elderly and disabled Americans) and Medicaid (health insurance for low-income people), health information technology, financial assistance and services for low-income families, improving maternal and infant health, head Start (pre-school education and services), faith-based and community initiatives, preventing child abuse and domestic violence, substance abuse treatment and prevention, services for older Americans, including home-delivered meals, comprehensive health services for Native Americans, and medical preparedness for emergencies, and potential terrorism (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2008).
Day-to-day responsibilities The day-to-day operations of the DHHS has a breakdown by departments, which supports research on disease and health concerns through the National Institute of Health, which protects consumers from adulterated or untested foods and drugs through the Food and Drug Administration that implements public health measures and monitors the spread of infectious diseases through the Centers for Disease Control and
