In 1607, a hundred members in a group known as, the Virginia Company founded the first English settlement in South America. When Christopher Columbus sailed around and founded America, King James 1 wanted to form a colony in North America. The colony was known as, Jamestown. The colony struggled from illness and hunger its first years, this was because the colony failed to grow crops. They then turned to John Smith who help the colony survive. The colony need more supplies and food so, they established trade with the Powhatan tribe this was primary because, of John Smith. The relationship between them two wasn’t perfect but, it was good. The Native Americans had nearly a hundred deaths due to the harsh winter in 1609. The colony was on the brink of failure and when the settlers got ready to abandon the colony a ship with almost 150 men carrying supplies on ships arrived. The new settlers were sent by Lord De La Warr. He was the new governor of the English colony. He later died and the new governor created a new system of laws that which then began to try to take control. The Powhatan tribe didn’t like it and later the Jamestown killed some of the Algonquians. They had their first war in 1610 known as the Anglo-Powhatan war. After the war the colony begin to decline. Then John Rolfe came to Virginia and brought tobacco to Jamestown. Tobacco saved Jamestown and ensured its economic survival. By 1619, Virginia was exporting large amounts of crops. The colony wanted to grow in production and capital so, they offered fifty acre land grants to anyone supplying their own passage to attract others.
