The Puritans were a religious group of people who came from England to America in the 1600’s. As Protestants, they relied heavily on the Bible as the guide for every part of their lives. They used these biblical principles as the basis for their laws and marriage. The Puritans had very strict rules about how men and women should act in a marriage and had very harsh penalties for those who broke these rules. According to Matthew Glass and Edward Queen, “During the Colonial Period, Protestant Americans viewed sex as a fundamental feature of married life, enabling reproduction as well as providing an outlet for feelings.” Because they felt this was an important part of marriage, the Puritan laws were meant to be followed. As society gained more people, sex became more widespread which made the officials of the church look for more ways to stop the desire to do anything. Overall, the Puritans had meticulous standards for individuals, immoderate laws and punishments, habits and daily life which were strictly formed by decisive ways.

Dissent always existed in the New England Colonies; the Puritans rarely all agreed on one point. Differing theological opinions forged a schism between groups and lead to the creation of colonies such as Rhode Island. As they stressed literacy, individuals formed their own impressions of the gospel. Minister Roger Williams, for example, disagreed with the Massachusetts Bay Colony’s Indian relations and lack of religious freedoms. Roger Williams wrote this on the matter, “God requireth not a uniformity of religion to be enacted and enforced; which enforced uniformity sooner or later is the greatest occasion of civil war.”

The colonists fled Europe for many reasons. These included being poor, lack of food, and diseases. They believed they could escape the bad things that were happening to them by coming to the new world. One of the major problems was that they wanted religious freedom. When they built their colonies, they could worship under the religions of their choice.

Many colonists justify their colonization of America through religious beliefs. At first, they were there for their own religious freedom. When they came to the United States, they felt the urge of making and practicing their own religious beliefs and setting an example for the whole nation about how to make a better community. They all decided to help each other when one will be in a problem. All the colonists had their beliefs which they followed but I believe this particularly disturbed the life of native American Indians in terms of cultural practices, living/house situation, family life, trade, disease, and autonomy.

Some people, like the Quakers, wanted religious freedom from the Puritans. Some people believed in strange superstitions that alienated non-believers. Some people believed government and religion should be the same although government eventually became separated from religion. If the New World in the colonies was to be successful for the most people, the conflict between the many religions would have to be addressed.

Settlers came to the American Colonies for various reason, these included: religious, economic, and political reasons. The political and religious reasons are tied together. Settlers that came for religious reasons wanted religious freedom, something the Church of England didn’t allow. Separatist and pilgrims disagreed with the Anglican Church and fell into political disfavor. So, settlers formed colonies to escape the religious intolerance of the Church of England, but every colony had their own separate religious views. Furthermore, many settlers came to the American Colonies to make a profit, for example, Carolina was found by mostly poor tobacco farmers, they arrived because they wanted to make a profit by trading and farming.

In the 1600’s, Puritans, which were sometimes called “precisionists” arrived in New England, were part of an activist movement within the Church of England. Amid the 1600s, waves of Puritan outsiders landed in the locale of New England, settling the territory and creating populace focuses in zones like Massachusetts Bay, where the some piece of Boston was built. Freedom of religion supports the right of a person or group to practice their religion in public or private places. It also means we have the freedom to change religions when we feel the need or not practice any at all. This important because we should never be told how to practice our own religion or be told what religion we have to follow.

Puritan and Deist ideology are polar opposites of each other. While Puritans believed that earning salvation was based upon their own earthy actions, Deist’s felt that God did not care about what humans did on earth, and had abandoned mankind after he created the earth. Puritans persecuted anyone who did not conform to their ways, while Deist’s usually tended their own garden. Some Puritan authors used scare tactics as a method to increase belief in God, while some wrote tales of tragic romance and preached against materialism. Deist literature of the 18th century was centered on science more than religion.
