He deduces that “it necessarily had to be the case that I, who was thinking this, was something” (Descartes 18), leading him to his famous axiom “I think, therefore I am” (Descartes 18). Even if his senses, his prior knowledge, and anything about his physical body and life are a fabrication, his mind itself must exist. Descartes’ argue that mind is better known than body by first claiming humans as fundamentally rational, meaning “a thing that doubts, understands, affirms, denies, is willing, is unwilling,” ( Descartes, 19) he therefore argues that humans have the ability to know their proper minds clearly and distinctly. In the “Second Meditation,” of “Meditations on the First Philosophy,” Descartes contends that, even if a “malicious deceiver” was purposefully attempting to trick him, one thing is “necessarily true”. “I am…only a thing that thinks…a thinking thing.” From this, Descartes asks, “What else am I?” His answer is that he is not just a body, or a “…thin vapour which permeates the limbs…” He is something, which is identical with his awareness of himself yet, what that is, he is not sure. Accordingly, Descartes can only make judgments about the things known to him, because judgment is thinking, and thus, he knows that he exists. This, for Descartes, is the first thing he can be certain of, that he does exist, as something that thinks.

This paper will attempt to explain Descartes’ first argument for the distinction that exists between mind and body. Dualism is a necessary aspect of Descartes’ metaphysics and epistemology.
