History has shown us that gender has been an issue over the years. Many define a woman by her gender, rather than actions and words. However, there is always someone who sparkles in the dark. There was a woman who rebelled against an unmistakably patriarchal, male-commanded Greek society; a woman who challenged the requests of the King to take after her heart; a woman who acted as per her feeling of good and bad; a woman with extraordinary veneration for connections and a considerably more noteworthy devotion towards family values. Such a woman merits acclaim. A revolt; a legend; a case; a woman, Antigone. In this essay I will argue the importance of Antigone in feminism, and it’s relation with Kant’s philosophy, categorical imperative.

Without laws. As a woman, Antigone is supposed to get married, have children, and be a housewife. As Elaine Fantham explains in her book Women in the Classical World: Image and Text, “Child care was of course the main preoccupation of a women’s quarter of an Athenian house…” this statement shows how limited a woman’s life was back in Ancient Greece. (104) Fanthman furthers “Playing with dolls and nurturing pet animals prepared a girl for marriage and motherhood. Dolls were dressed as girls of marriageable age.” (104) Women’s only role in society was to bear and raise the children, because such is necessary to permit the continuation of it, otherwise wives would have been ignored. Without bearing in mind all of these, the brave Antigone decides to go after what she considers to be right. She stands up for her beliefs, however this means challenging the moral and ethical values of that time. The circumstances of her time makes it even harder to disobey the laws. Antigone's soul is full of fortitude, energy, and fierceness; which permit her to symbolize the very quintessence of women. She is sufficiently strong to
