Research Paper: A Career As A Registered Nurse

“Constant attention by a good nurse may be just as important as a major operation by a surgeon.” There was a girl who had always wanted to become one of importance, education, and also a contributor in her community. She feels that this occupation will assist her in living comfortably, providing for her family, and will be something she will enjoy doing. The career of a Registered Nurse is a challenging and important career, because of the importance one holds within a community. The research will describe the career of a Registered Nurse, what is required to become a successful, and the impact this career has on society.

My nursing career has been a journey full of gratification and personal success. Six years of bedside nursing has taught me how essential teamwork and communication is when working to restore health in the critically ill. Today I find myself ready to advance my career into a Master’s Degree. Advancing my career will grant me with the opportunity to service my community and allow me to treat my patient’s holistic needs. As an advanced practice nurse, I plan to use my knowledge to further educate, reinforce and advocate for those in need. By accepting my application to the Adult/Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program you will provide me with the opportunity I need to expand my caring journey.

My educational goals are to receive my Associates Degree in Nursing at Shelton State Community College so that I can work as a Registered Nurse. After working as a Registered Nurse for at least two-years, I plan on returning to school to obtain my bachelor’s Degree in Nursing. Becoming a Nurse is more of a calling then just a job or a career for me. I have worked in the healthcare field as a Certified Nursing Assistant since I was eighteen years old. I have known that I’ve wanted to be a Registered Nurse since I was fourteen when I helped take care of my sick grandmother. Becoming a Nurse is very important to me because I have a passion for taking care of people and I know that I can make a big difference in people’s life.

The first career that I chose was registered nurse. The Holland Interest Code for registered nurse was SIC. I believe that S, which stands for Social or Helpers, does fit me to some extent, as I enjoy helping others but I do not enjoy being social very much. Next is I, which stands for Investigative or Thinkers. I believe that this category fits me well, as I often am curious and look into subject that I don’t know about, and I do enjoy a good challenge or too. Last is C, which stands for Conventional or Organizers. I think this is the category that fits me the best, as I enjoy organizing things and strictly following rules. Being the determined person that I am, I, Cyra Ente, am currently on track to become a nurse through University of North Florida’s nursing program. The nursing program at the University is difficult to receive entrance without hard work and determination, due to the fact it requires rigorous courses. I know the work load will exhaust me mentally and physically. Also, professors teaching styles determines how well I do in the class and as of now it remain unknown. I am left guessing as to whether my learning experience will be a breeze or if I barely make it out alive. Of course, I want to become knowledgeable of the different resources provided on campus and take advantage of that. I find that remaining ignorant at non-science related topics will hinder my growth, specifically in my career field. Going through this journey will not only build knowledge, but morph me to be proficient as an independent learner and success in my career path.

When I began my research for the senior project I expected to find out what a day in the life of a nurse really is, but I was surprised when my mentor Vicki summed up the truth for the hardest part about the job saying, “You won’t save everyone, you can’t be everyone’s friend, and you won’t be okay at the end of every day”. Every job has pros and cons, but being a nurse isn’t just a job- it’s a lifestyle, and it isn’t for everyone with the preconception that they really are cut out for it.

My major is pre-nursing and I hope to attend nursing school in the near future. In nursing school, I would be studying for a bachelor’s degree in nursing and become a registered nurse. Registered nurses do not have a speciality they work instead they “…provide and coordinate patient care, educate patients and the public about various health conditions, and provide advice and emotional support to patients and their family members”("Registered Nurses”). Being a registered nurse is not my career goal, my ultimate would be to become an advanced practice nurse, which is the echelon nurses. Since a very young age I have known that I belong in the medical field. While I wasn’t exactly sure what profession it would be in, I knew that I was called to care for and serve others. It wasn’t until I spent a good amount of time in the hospital and under went numerous surgeries due to a dirt bike accident that I knew a nurse was what I was meant to be. The nurses that cared for me had every quality I aspired to be and played a huge role in my healing process. They were patient, kind, compassionate, hopeful, diligent, selfless, gregarious, and their job challenged them every single day. While I know being a nurse is very stressful and demanding, the rewards of the job far exceed any tribulations. This is exactly why I want to pursue a career

Throughout my life, I’ve had many future career interests like becoming a teacher, dentist, and even an astronaut. Once, when I was with my friend in the hospital for her concussion, I was sent out of her room and I ended up having to wait outside. As I waited, I realized how intrigued I was while watching all the different things that the nurses and doctors were doing. I knew at that point what I wanted to be when I grew up, a nurse, but more specifically, a registered nurse.

When I was a kid, I dreamt of being a doctor. No matter what game I was playing, I always tried involving the roles of doctors. Growing up I knew this is what I wanted to do. This is what interested me. As I got older I turned more to nursing and I can see myself doing this. Nurses have to be graduated from college nursing program and passed a national licensing exam. Nurses take tasks to take care for their patients on the daily. They keep medical records, provide mediation, they talk with other help care providers, monitor patients, and give educational information to families. Being a nurse definitely has its pros and cons. It often takes away from your home life; being available to 24-hour work shifts, but being a nurse you have to make

I chose to pursue a career in nursing career due to previous experiences at hospitals. When I was younger, I had multiple cases of hives. My parents would only know what it was called in Cantonese, but not in English. When we went to the hospital, we had to wait until a translator came because my parents felt more comfortable talking to someone who could speak in Cantonese with them. This meant the interpreter was the middle man between my parents and the medical team which would allow for more human error and communicate problems. Today, we live in a country where the people come from all over the country. Since not everyone speaks English, it is more beneficial to know multiple languages. Because all these people live in the same community, it would be difficult for those, such as immigrants, to excise actions such as calling a 911 operator for help or going to hospital in the event of an emergency. Growing up, my Cantonese speaking skills were able to improve and I was also able to learn Mandarin in high school. Being able to speak multiple languages will allow for me to talk to patients that only speak Cantonese or Mandarin without waiting for an available translator. Waiting for a translator could be for any amount of time, but within the waiting time an emergency could happen and lead to someone’s death. Many times, some word will sound similar between languages,

Nursing is taking care of other people that are sick or need special care. Nurses usually come in and do the normal check how the patient is doing, if they need anything, and any other necessary procedures. “Registered nurses (RNs) provide and coordinate patient care, educate patients and the public about various health conditions, and provide advice and emotional support to patients and their family members” (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2015, Pay Section). Nurses also run tests, give medication, and record their information and results. They are many different kinds of nursing and each one has different responsibilities that go along with them. For example a Oncology nurse would be dealing with cancer patients and a home care nurse would likely be taking care of disabled or elderly people. Those two involve very different things but are both related in the fact that the nurse takes care of the patient and help them through their sickness.

The career I currently have in mind would be a registered nurse. I believe my main source of interest in this career is that I have the desire to help people who are in need and who would care for them in hard times. Also, I am filipino and in philippines, most of the parents expect their kids to be nurse. The skills that I could apply for this career is that I’m a very hard worker person, I have the skill to communicate and collaborate effectively, and I have the passion to help people who are in need. I’ve wanted this career since I was 9th grade. I have a little experience in this career, because, I motivated and helped my sick grandmother to eat healthy food and to exercise so she can be stronger.

Did you know the first nursing school in the U.S. was opened in 1873? As a nurse they monitor the patients health and advise the patient about their condition. A Surgeon most likely treats the patients conditions. Similarly, they both work with patients and both inform the patients about their condition. However, registered nurses work with the patients by watching over them or providing care. Surgeons actually treat the condition like broken bones or tumors.
