Savant Syndrome comes with serious mental disabilities which include autistic disorder, but some type of genius qualities are expressed, which is in direct conflict with the nature of the syndrome. People that suffer from the syndrome have varying degrees of developmental disabilities, but the common link is always in the ability to remember massive amounts of information.

As I review the 60 minutes interview with Derek Paravicini I found out he is an interesting young man. He was born blind and with a severe learning disability,due to his birth being very premature, at just 25 weeks. He is a musical prodigy, having perfect pitch and the ability to play virtually any piece of music after hearing it only once. Derek could hear music just one time and play it. When was not playing music he continues to have his learning disability.

Several years ago, I was talking to my late grandpa who had gone to see Hall of Famer, Ken Griffey Jr. give a speech to some young children. After his speech, a dad stood up and asked “Mr. Griffey, you and I have something in common. I have been playing baseball all my life just like you. We are about the same age and we even come from the same hometown. The only difference between us is that you are a celebrated All- Star ballplayer, and I-- despite decades of hard work-- have never been able to play past college ball. This breaks my heart. In 1989, Pete Rose, baseball’s greatest player, was banned from baseball by Major League Commissioner, Bart Giamatti, when it was discovered that while managing the Cincinnati Reds, Rose was actively betting on them to win. This resulted in making him ineligible for the Hall of Fame because the Hall does not recognize player who’s names appears on the permanently ineligible list.

These prodigies, who had reached professional status at a very young age had varying theories of causation ranging from nurture to nature. The results indicated they had elevated level of intelligence, working memory and attention to detail. Interestingly, however, their family pedigrees showed an over-representation of relatives with autism. This indicates a potential commonality between child prodigies and savants genetically leading to the conclusion that child prodigies possess a form of autism but suppress typical signs.

Joe DiMaggio was one of the most famous baseball player in the Yankees. DiMaggio had an outstanding 56 game hitting streak, in which it still stands. He was a three time MVP winner and an All-Star in all of hi 13 seasons. DiMaggio went to harvard. He enlisted on February 17, 1943. His parents and among others were named “enemy aliens”. Joe was married to Dorothy Arnold in 1939 and then Marilyn Monroe in 1954. DiMaggio made many achievements in his time playing baseball.

Derek Jeter is the definition of a disciplined, well-rounded leader. He is an inspiration to men, women, and children everywhere. Not only is Derek Jeter an inspiration on the baseball field, he is also one off the field. This is a man who takes great pride in his craft and is always open to improvement. Not only is he open to improving himself, but he is also willing to help others approve.

For my summer homework assignment I read Born on a Blue Day by Daniel Tammet. It is an autobiography describing Daniel’s life and experiences as an Autistic Savant. I have always been fascinated with Savant Syndrome. Savants have tremendous abilities but at the same time have trouble interacting and living everyday life. It has always been a mystery to me how a person can have such genius but also struggle with activities most humans do not even give a second thought.
