John Powell Hubble was Edwin Hubble’s father. Edwin and his father contrasted in views of the future. John wanted Edwin to get a degree in law, and that is why Edwin studied law in college. However, John passed away in 1912, and it was because of this that Edwin returned to America (he had been at Queen’s College in England studying law) to start a career in astronomy. His father did not want Edwin to pursue astronomy because he “wouldn’t have let him go through school if he was going to be a thing so outlandish” (Christianson 40). Nevertheless, Edwin still studied astronomy; it was just after his father
Nicolaus Copernicus was an astronomer who believed the Sun was at the center of the universe
Burn’s Day Storm began, on January 25 and 26 over in North Western Europe. It was a hurricane force that had reaches over 104 mile per hour that had enough to cause a lot of damage. When the storm was over it had caused 97 dead, more than 500,000 people without powers, and 3,000 trees were destroyed. This hurricane was known as Daria.
Johannes Kepler was born on December 27,1571 in Weil der stadt in Swabia. Living in the wince region of Germany, not far from France Kepler lived in a high standing family his Grandfather being the mayor of a near by village of Eltingen and a well respected craftsmen. Kepler spoke of his father in low regard calling him as a rough soldier who loved to argue, and he spoke of his mother in less flattering words. Kepler's life wasnt made any easier with the diseases he contracted throughout his childhood.
First off, the two men worked in different fields of science. John Harrison worked in geography and Copernicus worked in astronomy. Geography is the study of land and the relationships between the land and the communities living in the area. If one studies geography, they also study the physical properties of the land and how the people and animals use the land. Astronomy is the study of astronomic objects, space and the physical universe. Besides this difference, Harrison had an immediate successor to continue pressing the ideas of using clocks to solve the longitude issue. Copernicus, on the other hand, had no one to help him continue his work once he had died; no one wanted to be associated with his work because the Church had renounced it. Both men faced struggles during their scientific career, but Harrison’s work was able to continue to grow while Copernicus’s work came to a halt for several
John Herschel was the son of William Herschel, an astronomer who discovered Uranus and Mary Pitt, the daughter of a wealthy merchant. He grew up in Slough, United Kingdom on March 7, 1792 and died on May 11, 1871. He spent most of his childhood in Observatory House, which is an observatory built and run by his father, where he carried out experiments in physics and chemistry. John studied at Dr Gretton’s School in Hitcham and he was sent to Eton College when he was eight years old, but he was bullied by the other boys. He was taken out of the school by his mother after a few months, and in addition to going to school at Clewer and Hitcham, John was tutored at home by Mr Rogers, a private mathematics tutor, to prepare him for university. He then entered St John's College, Cambridge in 1809 and saw through his many careers as an English polymath, mathematician, astronomer, chemist, inventor, and experimental photographer.
The scientific revolution was a period where there were many advances in science, math and technology. People started looking at things differently like astronomy. Johannes Kepler started to look at heliocentrism, The idea where the planets orbit the sun Kepler was a big part in this era by discovering three major laws of planetary motion. His laws explain the actions of the planets that orbit around the sun. Kepler was a huge part in the finding that the earth isn't the center of the universe. Johannes Kepler was the most important scientist in revolutionizing the world.
Edwin created Hubble’s Law, which supported the Big Bang Theory. Hubble also figured out that the Milky Way is not the only celestial body in the universe. “Hubble added integral knowledge to the field of astronomy, including the discovery of other galaxies and proof that the universe is constantly expanding” (Contemporary Heroes and Heroines, 2000). Hubble innovated in his field by changing the perspective of the Universe, and impacted society by making the world so much bigger. Hubble’s discoveries inspired multiple people to join the field of astronomy, and to remain open to new situations. Whenever somebody is able to do this well, they are bound to do great
The only thing standing in Edwin’s way of getting a clean picture of the stars was this thing known as the Earth’s atmosphere, which because of the fluidic gas and dust that make up the atmosphere it often “blurs visible light, causing stars to twinkle and making it difficult to see faint stars.”(Dunbar) As this makes his job virtually impossible, a German scientist comes up with the idea of a telescope in space to not only see farther but also to see clearer, this was a crucial turning point in Hubble’s findings and will eventually lead to the one of the greatest and most recognized theories around the world.
Edwin Hubble- One of the most important astronomer there is also the inventor of the Hubble telescope also said to be the man who discovered the cosmos/first to demonstrate the existence of other galaxies had hope to find other things out there in space.
Edwin Hubble was born on November 20, 1889 to John and Virginia Lee Hubble in Marshfield, Missouri and he was the 3rd of 8 children in his family. On Hubble’s 8th birthday he was given his first telescope that his grandfather then set up at his house. Around 1901, Hubble and his family moves to Wheaton, Illinois where Hubble then wrote a letter to his grandfather discussing life on Mars. His very pleased grandfather then sent the letter to a newspaper in Springfield, Missouri. Hubble graduated at the age of 16 and received a scholarship to the University of Chicago.
The first man to circumnavigate around the whole world, A brave man to fight for freedom, a young boy growing up to become a hero, he is Ferdinand Magellan, Magellan made some quotes and I will show you one of them, He said, The church says the earth is flat, but I know that is is round, for I have seen the shadow on the moon, and I have more faith in the shadow than in the church. Ferdinand Magellan.
However, Hubble understood that teaching was not for him, so after one year he wrote to Moulton, his astronomy professor at University of Chicago, about rejoining the university as a graduate student. Hubble studied at Yerkes Observatory in Wisconsin, which was equipped with a 40 inch refractor. His first discovery was made when comparing images of nebulae over a few years. He noticed that there were faint changes occurring in the nebulae demonstrating that changes in nebulae could occur (Osterbrock, 1990).. Hubble completed his doctorate in 1917(Brown, n.d.), to which his thesis was titled “Photographic Investigations of Faint Nebulae.” His thesis would foreshadow many of his future discoveries as it emphasized that the nebulae exist outside of the Milky Way and possibly millions of light years away (Osterbrock, 1990). Upon completion of his Ph.D., Hubble was offered a job at Mount Wilson Observatory near Pasadena, California (Brown, n.d.). The observatory was home to the most powerful telescope in the world at that time, the new 100-inch Hooker Telescope. It was here where Hubble would stare at the stars and discover so much about the cosmos (Osterbrock,
Galileo Galilei played a major role in the Renaissance. He was an Italian scientist, physicist, mathematician, philosopher, inventor, and astronomer. His ideas and observations are to thank for modern physics and astronomy, today. Born on February 15, 1564, in Pisa, Italy, Galileo helped open the eyes of many to a new way of thinking about our solar system. This earned him the nickname of “The Father of Modern Science.”
Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese explorer who set out from Spain in September 20, 1519 with 5 ships, which were the San Antonio, the Victoria, the Conception, and the Santiago with 270 men, trying to discover a western sea route to the Spice Islands in Indonesia. He set sail to West Africa than Brazil, he searched for the Rio de la Plata, a large estuary in Brazil. But, he failed. The voyage was dangerous and long, and out of the 5 ships he went out to explore, he only came back with 1 ship, and 18 men. On October 21, he discovered the strait he was looking for, he named it the Strait of Magellan, which was located near the top of South America. Only 3 ships entered, one was wrecked and another was stranded. It took 38 days to navigate,
Ferdinand Magellan was the first person to circumnavigate the world. He was a Portuguese explorer who planned the expedition to the East Indies. Magellan was born in Sabrosa, Portugal in 1480. He was born into a noble family. Around 1500, Magellan became a skilled sailor and naval officer and was eventually selected by King Charles I to search for a westward route to the Moluccas Islands. King Charles financed the expedition.
