Ernest Hemingway Although Ernest Hemingway might be an older author, he has written some classic novels, such as The Old Man and the Sea and For Whom the Bell Tolls. This American short story writer and novelist was around years ago. Born in 1899, Ernest was raised by his parents, Clarence and Grace Hemingway. Growing up, Ernest and his parents loved to spend time away from their home in Chicago, Illinois. This is what inspired Ernest to write one of his best selling novels, titled A Farewell to Arms.
In 1920, Ernest got back on his feet and decided to move to Toronto to take on a job as a Toronto Star newspaper journalist. Later in the year, Ernest decided that he wanted to move back to his hometown of Chicago, Illinois. Although he moved away from Toronto, he still kept his job. During this time Ernest spent at home, he met a woman named Elizabeth Hadley Richardson. Elizabeth would turn out to be Ernest’s first wife. After the couple was married, Ernest and Elizabeth soon moved to the city of Paris, France. As a writer, Ernest met Gertrude Stein in Paris, who would soon become something of a mentor to Ernest. Gertrude introduced Ernest to other artists, such as Pablo Picasso and F. Scott Fitzgerald (Biography.com). In 1923, Ernest and his wife, Elizabeth, became pregnant with their first child. During this time when Ernest wasn’t writing, he and Elizabeth traveled to Pamplona, Spain where they attended a bullfight, in hopes to “toughen up” their unborn son (Shmoop.com). The couple’s son, John, was born on October 10, 1923. In May of 1925, Hemingway constructed a friendship with F. Scott Fitzgerald. Ernest Hemingway was a famous author who wrote stories about his personal experiences. Born on July 21, 1899 in Oak Park, Illinois, Hemingway grew up in the outdoors where he learned to hunt and fish ("Ernest Hemingway", 2014). A few years later at his high school, he became one of the editors for the newspaper, Trapeze and Tabula, specifically writing on sports ("Ernest Hemingway", 2014). After graduation, Ernest packed his bags and moved to Kansas City where he pursued a job for The Kansas City Star, as a journalist ("Ernest Hemingway", 2014).
Due to Hemingway’s horrific relationship with his mother, Grace Hemingway, Hemingway was never able to endure all his other relationships long enough for him to truly enjoy them. Of course he did have a few memorable moments in each relationship he had, everyone receives one each day. But, it just comes down at the end of Hemingway’s life; he was unhappy and regretted almost all of his four marriages. Also, Hemingway felt that he was never truly “man enough” and continuously wanted to prove himself to others. When everyone told they believed he was very masculine, he would not believe it. Instead, Hemingway chose to express what he felt about his life experiences through his writing, letting the world see what he believed. Famously known for the tragic events from his past, American author, Ernest Hemingway connected with many readers across the world. His works helped influence many writers and readers during the World War I aftermath (Poetry Foundation). After taking his life in 1961, Hemingway left a huge impact on the literary and social world (Akers). After becoming an important figure in the literary world, Ernest Hemingway connected with many other well known authors such as Ezra Fitzgerald, Ezra Pound, Gertrude Stein and many others. Ernest Hemingway’s controversial stories were written as a way to express himself and became well known for discussing topics such as abortions.

Hemingway was only eighteen at the time. He had several wounds on both legs, and had to be operated immediately. Apparently, he fell in love for the first time with a Red Cross nurse, Agnes von Kurowsky. They agreed to get married, but later on, she wrote him with the news of her engagement to someone else, which left him heartbroken and devastated. Biographer Jeffrey Meyers claims that “Hemingway was devastated by Agnes' rejection, and he followed a pattern of abandoning a wife before she abandoned him in future relationships.” Personally, one might think that there is more to the way Hemingway was than what a reader may believe.
Star. Hemingway signed up as a volunteer ambulance driver for the Red Cross during WWI. He was accepted in December of 1917, left his job at the paper in April of 1918, and sailed for Europe in May. When Hemingway returned home from Italy in January of 1919 he found Oak Park dull compared to the adventures of war. With a letter of introduction from Sherwood Anderson, Hemingway met some of Paris' prominent writers and artists and forged quick friendships with them during his first few years. Counted among those friends were Ezra Pound, Gertrude Stein, Sylvia Beach, James Joyce, Max Eastman, Lincoln Steffens and Wyndahm Lewis, and he was acquainted with the painters Miro and Picasso. Hemingway was inspired to write different works at different times because of the events that occured in his life.
