The language, the imagery, the themes, the characters, everything in Toni Morrison's Sula, touches my heart. I want these people to win, to know goodness in their lives, to stop being small. I want the loud and long cry of rage which has no bottom or top with "circles and circles of sorrow" to end (Sula 174). Morrison embraces the political aspects of her work without apology and freely admits to desiring to emote a reader response. She maintains, "the best art is political and you ought to be able to make it unquestionably political and irrevocably beautiful at the same time" ("Rootedness" 345). Not until more than two years later did the enslaved people of Texas learn that they were free. The word came on June 19th, 1865. (Banks 444)
Morrison has two purposes in drawing our attention to this marker. It shows the integrity of the government that takes two and a half years for Texas slaves to learn they are free. The second is to question how far the African Americans have come in a hundred years of "freedom". Vietnam is heating up, and Black troops are among the many called to fight the war. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 outlaws segregation in public places and makes it illegal to deny a person a job on the basis of gender, age or skin color (556). Another victory is won when The Voting Rights Act of 1965 passes, guaranteeing the right of all Americans to vote (557). Finally, African Americans have a voice in their future. It only took a hundred years after the ending of slavery to have these critical rights. Despite all the mandated change, discrimination continues; and Malcolm X, a volatile leader who fought for African American rights, is assassinated. Promises coupled with death and dying. Nothing changing: everything changing. Hope dying, and the need is to mark the occasion with a cry of rage.

Sula wanted nothing to do with a husband that would betray her and cheat on her and come home and just be horribly mean to her. I think the biggest emotional obstacle Sula endured was watching her mother burn to death. Sula went through an obstacle course of emotions and relationships. Poor choices were made, which led to her ultimate demise, however, her demise was her own choice. It was pretty ironic how the dislike for Sula brought the community together. With their dislike for Sula they forgot about the problems they had with each other.
In the novel Sula, by Toni Morrison we follow the life of Sula Peace through out her childhood in the twenties until her death in 1941. The novel surrounds the black community in Medallion, specifically "the bottom". By reading the story of Sula’s life, and the life of the community in the bottom, Morrison shows us the important ways in which families and communities can shape a child’s identity. Sula not only portrays the way children are shaped, but also the way that a community receives an adult who challenges the very environment that molded them. Two young girls, coalescing on a grass-laden field while lying on their stomachs, dig a hole in unspoken harmony. A picture of youth and innocence, this scene depicts an innocuous moment which the two girls share as a result of their juvenescence--or does it? In Toni Morrison 's Sula, this scene, among others, appears at first to be both irrelevant to the novel’s underlying theme and out of place with regard to the rest of the plot. Yet, when analyzed further, the literary devices that Morrison uses in these scenes bring readers to a vastly different conclusion. As Morrison progressed as a writer one can definitively view her evolution not only as a writer but as a thinker. In Sula, the reader can view an author who is quintessentially confused by the system of segregation. Specifically, one could contrive that Sula is Morrison’s attempt to examine the aspects in which segregation helped cement African-American culture, but once America was desegregated the same communities that were empowered by oppression were decimated by the white communities’ extraction of African-American culture. Whereas within Love, one can view a Morrison not content with African-American proliferation under the banner of segregation, but hatred for the powerful individuals of the community that reinforced the system of segregation and oppressed their own community in the effort to gain not only money, but power. As one thinks about the multi-faceted layers of segregation within Toni Morrison’s writings, one can view a political activist who felt content in her youth, rationalizing the evils of this world, yet in the present an enraged woman content with not only the removal of white prosperity within segregation, but African-American elite prosperity upon the literal blood of African-American
She is completely free of her goals, with no money minded, and no jealousy. She is faced with a racist small medallion town and a sexist society. She defends herself by creating a life, however strange, that is rich and experimentally. She denies to settle for a woman’s traditional marriage, raising child, labor, and pain. The women of the bottom hate Sula because she is living criticism of their own terrible lives of public notice. Furthermore, gender inequality is another major issue that the readers won’t be able to miss as they read the adventures of Sula, Nel, and all other interesting people living in the Bottom. Sula Peace is a black woman who fights for against the racist, conservative thinking, and bottom line women in small town. “Unconventional young woman growing up in a black community that was founded on worthless land once given to a freed slave” (Cassidy, Thomas). She wants to destroy traditional thoughts and beliefs; such as belief on conservative traditions, get married, have kids, raise kids, and live under the patriarchal society. In addition, Sula is a strange, extra-ordinary, super feature birth mark on her eyes; symbolizes bold and independence from the bottom line
In her book Sula, Toni Morrison creates a parallel between good and evil through her use of symbolism and syntax. Coinciding with her abundance of symbolism, she often times uses birds to allow her readers to know when evil is present within her novel. Usually associated with happiness and rebirth, Morrison instead chooses to details birds as portents of death or wickedness within the Bottom. This parallel between the freedom and joy of a bird and the haunting imminence of death ultimately diminishes the severity of each calamity.
Clearly, the significant silences and the stunning absences throughout Morrison's texts become profoundly political as well as stylistically crucial. Morrison describes her own work as containing "holes and spaces so the reader can come into it" (Tate 125), testament to her rejection of theories that privilege j the author over the reader.
