Bill Jones-Smith was a successful lawyer and the primary breadwinner of the home who ruled the family with an iron fist. Additionally, he was also stern in relation to his relationship with Skylar’s older son Cole. He repeatedly voiced his concern about Blake’s marijuana use and his girlfriend. Furthermore, he projected a sense of insecurity in relation to marriage because he feared that Skylar would divorce him as she had done with her previous husband. Skylar was a stay at home mom and a yoga instructor who strongly enjoyed encouraging her family to live organically. Although, she was passionate about promoting and living a healthy lifestyle for herself and her family, she was very passive in all other matters of the family. She did voice her concerns about the turbulent relationship among Bill’s daughter, Veronica and her sons Blake and Cole. Veronica was Bill’s 10 year-old daughter, who was very academically ambitious and very demanding of her father’s affection. She would her daughter and father relationship as a way to encourage her father to continuously side with her.

After having a thorough read of the novel ‘Jasper Jones’ by Craig Silvey, I have come to understand the powerful effects of using written codes and conventions in novels. Silvey’s impressive piece of literature was carefully constructed through techniques such as characterization, socio-cultural context, themes and intertexuality. By doing this, Silvey was accredited for convincing the readers, appealing to their emotions and manipulating their beliefs and values to accept or agree with his opinions on the issue covered in the novel.
Mr. Jones displays several of these mania symptoms in the movie. Once he is released from the psychiatric institution after being incorrectly diagnosed as paranoid schizophrenia, he goes to the bank and withdraws over $12,000 from his account that he just open five days earlier and charms the bank teller, Susan, into joining him for the day. Then Mr. Jones gives a $100 bill to Susan, because she “will need it to
It is a natural part of human nature to long for the feeling of belonging and fitting into what people consider “normal.” Craig Silvey brings this idea into the novel Jasper Jones through the use of the historical setting of the 1960s as a platform to demonstrate realistic examples of racial discrimination and its consequences; the historical context also plays an important role in the setting of Corrigan, Western Australia, as the small fictitious town represents how the whole of Australia was following a corrupt social regime obsessed with appearances. The use of setting, first person narration and characters in the novel educates the reader of the reality of the “White Australia” movement and the impact it had on those of Australian Aboriginal
From the tone of Mick’s voice, the alcohol acts a sedative to numb the pain from his past. This motive for drinking is also evident through Lisa’s brother, Jimmy, after he loses both his girlfriend, Adelaine, and his goal in becoming an Olympic swimmer. The legacy of residential school is also manifested in Trudy and Tab’s mother-daughter relationship. Tab becomes the victim of her mother’s psychological and emotional upheaval that is a result from her childhood. In the grip of alcohol, Trudy often mistreats Tab. Removed from a family environment and placed in a reformation school, individuals return not only emotionally and psychologically scarred, but also unable to reestablish their own functional family. Tab confesses to Lisa that she wishes she had a mother like hers, saying, “You’re lucky. You’re really lucky that your dad was too young to go to rez school. [...] Just Mick and my mum went and it fucked them up” (Robinson 254). Trudy’s sister Kate also notes that Trudy “thinks Mother’s dirt, while she goes out and parties and treats Tab worse than what she blames Mother for” (Robinson 285).
{Video showing wolf pack} How do you rise above someone’s unethical morality? Rise above the people around you? Rise above them like an alpha wolf of a pack? Well, sometimes rising above the pack isn’t about your physicality, but rather your ability to challenge the prominent beliefs of the pack and chose the correct path in a crossroad.
Not only did it mark the beginning of Taylor’s confidence as a parent, but proof that Taylor and Turtle are still together after many challenges. Taylor learned to love and care for Turtle tremendously after overcoming times of doubts, fears, and times they were almost separated. It was clear that Taylor didn’t want children, so Turtle’s sudden appearance in her life was very tough. Keeping Turtle was the biggest life choice Taylor had to make, but it all worked out amazingly in the end. After the incident with Edna and Turtle in the park, it took a while, but Taylor finally acknowledges that she can be the best mother Turtle could have. When Turtle becomes Taylor’s “legal” guardian/parent, her confidence is proven when she says, “And me. I was the main ingredient.” on their way back to their home in Arizona. It shows that Taylor and Turtle finally feel like they belong together. Their growth is also shown when their first night together and their return trip is compared. On their first night together, Turtle was traumatized and catatonic. On their trip home after getting Turtle’s documents, Turtle was happily talking and giggling. To be able to make a child who has went through as many hardships as Turtle smile and grow is truly an achievement. Turtle's document is only the start of their bright future
In 1960s, rural Australia, racism and prejudice is at a high. This period of time was a very dark era for those of noticeably different races. During the 1960s, the Vietnam War was taking place and involved over 50,000 Australian troops. Due the issues of this time it added to the overall intensity of rural Australia. “Jasper Jones” written by Craig Silvey introduces us to a world during this time.
