Gender inequality has been an issue in society for hundreds of years and it is still a barrier for men and women today. Emma Watson, a United Nations Women Goodwill Ambassador and British actress, delivered a passionate and moving speech on gender inequality at the United Nations headquarters in New York City on September 20, 2014. Watson’s speech, “Be The He For She”, was directed towards the billions of people who watched the televised speech, as well as fellow United Nations Ambassadors. Emma Watson uses this speech in order to inform and persuade the audience about gender inequality and feminism. As she presented her speech, she was trying to persuade billions of people, mostly men, to become advocates for ending gender inequality. Through …show more content…
Logos are the use of reasoning in order to persuade the audience. Emma Watson uses logos in order to explain why we all must join the fight against gender inequality. Watson states that Hillary Clinton made a speech in 1997 about women’s rights. She states that Clinton wanted many things to change for the better about women’s rights, however much of what she wanted to change is still around today. (349) She uses Hilary Clinton’s speech in 1997 about women’s rights to support the claim that it is important for not only women, but also men to join the fight against gender inequality. Watson says, “But what stood out for me the most was that only 30 per cent of her audience were male. How can we affect change in the world when only half of it is invited or feel welcome to participate in the conversation?”(349) She then formally invites the male population to join the conversation, and says that gender inequality is their issue too. By providing the fact that only thirty percent of Clinton’s audience was male, she is implying that the more men we have supporting gender equality, the more likely we will overcome the issue. Watson provides logos to give the audience a more credible and stable reason as to why they should become advocates for ending gender …show more content…
She says, “… ask yourself if not me, who, if not now when.” (349) She uses this to create a sense of urgency. Also, this can be used to encourage the audience members to step up and become leaders. Earlier in her speech, she describes that when she was presented with the opportunity to gives this speech, she asked herself those exact same words. The parting words of Watson’s speech are meant to encourage the audience the step up and do something first hand about the issue. Also, the parting words are meant to express how important everyone’s role is in fighting against gender
Bothe speeches were delivered at the United Nations headquarters in New York. Emma Watson, at the age of 24, launched a campaign called “HeForShe” on September 20, 2014. She is the UN Women Goodwill Ambassador and she was cohosting this event when she gave the speech. She is a famous British actress and has been advocating for gender equality.
Women Goodwill Ambassador. She is speaking about the problem of gender equality and unequal pay for men and women doing the same work. Her purpose is to demonstrate to the audience that the problem affects both men and women. She is fighting for women’s rights, but also trying to persuade men and boys to step up and help the women fight by joining her campaign, HeforShe. Her primary audience is all the delegates and guests who listened to her speech at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, and her secondary audience is men and boys all over the world. She appeals to ethos when she speaks about her own personal experiences with gender based assumptions from ages eight to eighteen in. She says her girlfriends dropped out of their sport teams in order to not appear so masculine. She appeals to pathos when gives the statistics on men’s suicide in the UK in order to tell men that gender equality is their problem as well. She is saying men also fear asking for help because they fear that they will appear un-manly. Watson’s speech is also structured by Monroe’s motivated sequence. She starts off her speech by speaking about her campaign and talking about how her experiences at different ages caused her to become a feminist in order to get the audience’s attention. She then tells the men and boys that gender equality is their issue too. This causes them to understand the need for change. She then formally invites them to help
The persuasive technique of logos relates to logic and reasoning. Logical appeal is to convince an audience by using facts and statistics to reinforce your credibility: facts and statistics can often also be used to support the assumptions you make. In law, logos are developed with evidence and facts to support a claim, and to underpin your reasoning and your conclusions. Logos refers to the author’s appeal to persuade by reason. A great example of a logos, is the famous speech “Ain’t I A Woman? – Sojourner Truth”. This speech was given in1851 to the Women's Convention in Akron, Ohio. Sojourner Truth believed in women equality. She wanted women and men to have equal rights and treatment. She used logos, as she stated that "[she] could work
While ethos and pathos can be found throughout the text, logos is the rhetorical device that stands out the most. Logos is used often to back up Fallows’ research and claims. Whether Fallows writes about the Clintons taking the field in 1994 or O. J. Simpson’s court case, he makes sure to include evidence. When detailing the theory that males and females are built differently, Fallows is
Presenting logos in such a powerful way is very effective in persuading the audience. If she can do what the above average white male can do, then she is no different and deserves equal rights. In the eyes of the audience she seems equal to any man, and that makes people realize that she more than deserves to have the same rights. It is common logic to many people, but Truth throws it in people’s faces and forces them to realize that they are
Logos is one type of rhetorical appeal speakers and writers can use to persuade their audiences. Logos evidence being used to persuade
One of the first claims she disputes is the fact that countless men say that women deserve all the care in the world. In her speech the speaker says,” That man
Logos are a way to persuade someone by using logic and facts. Logos were used a lot in The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, especially in the funeral speeches given by Brutus and Antony. In Brutus’s speech, he said, “Who is here so rude that would not be a Roman? If any, speak, for him I have offended. Who is here so vile that will not love his country? If any, speak, for him have I offended” (III.ii.l 32-34). Brutus is saying would you rather have Caesar be alive and you be slaves? Brutus says this to prove to the crowd that he had the right to kill Caesar to make lives better for the common people. This is an example of using logic. If Caesar was still living he would take all the power for himself and make all the common people be his slaves. Antony also used logos to persuade the crowd. Antony said, “I thrice presented him a kingly crown, which he did thrice refuse: was this ambition? Yet Brutus says he was ambitious; And, sure, he is an honorable man” (III.ii.l 97-100). Antony is contradicting what Brutus had previously said about Caesar be ambitious. This action of refusing the crown proves Caesar was not ambitious and that the conspirators were not noble in killing him. This is an example of a logo because he gives a logical argument and proof that Caesar was not
Do you think you could be a black woman and stand up in front of a group of white preachers to tell them that they’re completely wrong? Sojourner Truth did. If you were a well-respected actress, would you risk your entire career to tell the world what you believe in? Jennifer Lawrence did. In the speech “Ain’t I a Woman?”
Feminism, what is it? And how does it affect our society today? Feminist Emma Watson’s moving speech ‘Gender equality is your issue to’ tells us feminism isn't just a thought, it’s a true problem. Feminism is a topic known to many, but rejected by most of society. Watson shows her audience true emotion (Pathos), dedication, and love throughout her speech. She gives a clear aspect of feminism, making her listeners engaged into the topic, wanting to know more (Logos). She invites others into her ideas to ensure that she does not stand alone in this feminist movement (Ethos). Emma Watson is a true feminist trying to make a difference, persuading the audience, pouring her heart out, and believing in the world to join her in her free community.
This shows the extent of the damage gender roles can cause. Women are free to express their emotions; therefore, men should be too. Watson continues with “I’ve seen men made fragile and insecure by a distorted sense of what
As women do that same work, society believes that women should get paid less and Watson shows that with statistics and factual information. Using logos allows the audience to understand that this is taking place in society regularly. Also, Watson states “it won’t be until 2086 before all rural African girls can have a secondary education.” This shows that society does not care whether women are educated or not in society because they are betrayed differently. The facts Watson uses helps create her purpose to show that gender inequality is happening in society frequently.
The word feminism can cause people to have many different reactions. Watson suggests that some people feel that feminism is “man-hating”. Others feel that feminism should mean that women should be the dominant gender. Watson defines feminism in her speech as equality of genders on a political, economic and social spectrum (Watson). Watson is primarily arguing, however that feminism is not an issue that is specific to women. Feminism is the issue of all people; she also suggests that by address the issues of men’s inequality that it will transfer into resolving issues of women’s inequality. She proposes that men need to engage more in the conversation. That they to suffer from inequality and she provide good examples that personally affect her life. Emma Watson effectively argues that by addressing the issue of gender inequality people can work towards solving the issue of feminism.
Watson recalls a time from when faced the unsatisfactory of assumptions of young women, when she said “at age [fourteen] I started being sexualized by certain elements of the press” also when her peers began to submit towards the societal intimidation which placed upon them saying, according to Watson, “When at [fifteen] my girlfriends started dropping out of their sports teams because they didn’t want to appear “muscly.”” Watson shared these illustrations to allow her audience to be familiar with someone who has been a target to gender inequality. Without seeing the matter of gender inequality, the problem can be very blind at times; without actually viewing it through the human experiences, it can be lost to statistics and generalizations. Personifying the matter allows it to strengthen the sympathy and compassion from the audience to be felt for the speaker.
