Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech was given on August 28, 1963, at the Lincoln Memorial to over 250,00 people and was broadcasted on TV for the people to see. It was one of the largest marches that Washington D.C. had ever seen. His message was a call to end racism in the United States and demand for civil and economic rights. Dr. King's speech was highly successful because he used many different modes of persuasion to convince the American people to agree with his position on certain issues. The three main certain modes of persuasion that he used in his speech are logos, pathos, and ethos. The aim of Logos is to appeal to an audience by convincing them with reason or logic. Pathos aims at encompassing the emotional response from the audience and reduces the audience's ability to judge. Ethos deals with the character of the speaker, and also convinces the observers that the speaker and author are reliable.
Martin Luther King Jr. was not his given birth name, he was born as Michael King Jr. He was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta Georgia. Growing up, King's father was a member of a Baptist church, and stepped in to become the pastor of that church. He adopted the name Martin Luther King Sr. in remembrance of Martin Luther, a German Protestant that was an influential yet controversial figure in history. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. became a civil rights activist shortly after attaining his doctorate in theology from Boston University. He later went on to deliver one of the finest speeches in United States history on August 28, 1963 entitled “I Have a Dream.” Over 200,000 people arrived to hear King deliver this speech. King uses a number of rhetorical devices to accentuate his point such as metaphors, antitheses, as well as anaphora’s. In addressing the nation Dr. Martin Luther King Jr effectively uses the appeals of Ethos, Pathos and Logos to convince the audience to take action in demanding racial justice for African-Americans; He envisioned a nation uniting as one to defend the rights of every ethnicity under the constitution.
In 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. delivered one of the most influential speeches in history. Throughout his speech, King employs many rhetorical devices that further his appeal for civil rights. King establishes his credibility as soon as he steps to the podium. King, an American civil rights activist and leader, was already known by the American people for his leadership throughout the civil rights movement. His leadership role as a civil rights activist asserts his message as credible and true to the American people. Martin Luther King Jr. gave a speech titled “I Have a Dream” on August 28, 1963, at the Lincoln Memorial, Washington D.C. In this speech, Dr. King is trying to persuade all races specifically Blacks and Whites to take action in order to gain freedom and harmony in the community. He tries to do this by using different techniques to appeal to his audience. It is shown that he uses pathos or emotional appeal throughout his speech. Also there are clear signs of logical appeal which is called logos. In addition, to logos and pathos, Dr. King uses ethical appeal to strengthen his argument. One of the key main techniques that Dr. King uses is figurative language which gives his speech more emphasis on why action is needed.
On August 28th, 1963, civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr stood on the steps in front of the Lincoln Memorial and delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech. He spoke passionately for 17 minutes on his views about human equality for African Americans at one of the largest civil rights demonstrations in history. King played a major role in ending the segregation for African Americans. His rhetorical language left an impact on America. Through his use of appeals like ethos, logos, pathos, and other rhetorical techniques. He influenced Americans to believe in the notion that all men are created equal.

This speech was written and presented by Martin Luther King Jr. in the year 1963, right in front of the Lincoln Memorial. He uses symbolism, metaphorical imagery, and powerful diction to create an impact on the audience. These rhetorical strategies demonstrate ethos, pathos, and logos to help the audience Martin Luther King Jr’s message and purpose.
The speaker of this essay that I will be writing about is Martin Luther King Jr. He was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia at his family house. He was an American Baptist minister and activist who became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the Civil Rights Movement. Martin Luther King Jr. was a great American, worked for civil rights in the United States in the 1950s and 60s. He became so popular and well liked that he was hated just as intensely by those who disagreed with the equal rights movement. King's efforts led to the 1963 March on Washington, where King delivered his "I Have A Dream" speech. He followed what he believed in, doing the right thing fighting for the civil rights, and even though terrorists started
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his speech titled, "I Have a Dream" on August 28, 1963 in front of thousands of Americans with the purpose of attempting to motivate people to make a change. In this speech, Dr. King explains to his audience how acceptance and equality will make the Unites States a much better nation. Dr. King proves his points by utilizing imagery, diction, and figurative language; along with the primary strategies of pathos and ethos reasoning. Therefore, through his masterful uses of ethos, pathos, and writing styles; along with rhetorical questions, he is able to prove to America that segregation and racism were never supposed to be the intended foundations on which The United States of America were assembled.
On this historic day, October 28th 1963, many African-American men and women gathered around the Lincoln memorial to witness Martin Luther King Jr. change the way people of different color are treated. Martin Luther King Jr. gave the “I Have a Dream” speech during the Civil Rights Movement which gave a fighting chance for equality. The most important appeal that King uses is pathos, which he shows by being sorrowful, motivational, and rebellious.
Martin Luther King Jr. is one of the most iconic and well know activist to have ever lived. He was well known as a leader and voice to many people during the Civil Rights movement. One of the most important events in American history fell on the summer day of August 28, 1963. People gathered to watch one of the most important and inspired speeches in history. The day was filled with protest for The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. One speech from that day still rings in many American minds, “I Have A Dream”. This speech exhibits a very effective style, and tone to the readers that makes it undeniably powerful to hear. Even today this speech should be restated as many social issues still pollute our society, as we still live in a non-perfect world.
“I Have a Dream” is one sentence that changed the lives of thousands forever. Martin Luther King Junior is the architect and liberator of these influential words. Along with the speech, it galvanized. He made his voice heeded, and how he did it is what made this speech liberalizing beyond words. During Doctor King’s speech he applied the compelling technique of repetition. Throughout his speech he repeats phrases such as, “We cannot be satisfied,” “Let freedom ring,” and the remarkable, “I have a dream.” Repetition is a prevailing mechanism, and Dr. King fulfilled its power. But, to understand the speech one must first understand the context. At this time, the slave era was far gone but, not forgotten. Negro men and women were still experiencing segregation in the 1960’s. There was negro bathrooms, negro schools, negro water fountains, and even negro restaurants. Martin Luther King Jr. was an influential black man who took on the fight for equality. King presents his speech to a crowded Lincoln memorial — the same Lincoln who delivered the Emancipation Proclamation which freed enslaved Negros in the south nearly a hundred years before. Throughout the 1960s, King engaged in various civil rights movements furthering the cause for civil independence and rights. Through his civil rights, debatably the most famous, is his “I have a dream” speech. The reason “I Have a Dream” speech made massive impacts, is due to It struck directly into the hearts of Americans both black and white making America realize just what is really going on in this world. King informed people about racial equality and fairness. This speech hit home so well just by the way he structured his speech. You can notice that MLK structures his speech to appeal to the different types of audience, supporting it with the three rhetorical modes; ethos, pathos and logos.
Two scores and thirteen years ago, a wise American, wrote a speech, "I Have a Dream". Those of you that were in attendance, on this amazing day; standing at the feet of a great man, with similar goals; of freedom, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness; thank you. Your presence allowed his speech to reach heights, never imagine. As he stated in the "I Have a Dream" speech, it has become a "beacon light of hope" to millions of American's, not just Negros. Seven scores and thirteen years ago, Gettysburg, Virginia was addressed by, one of our leaders.
Supposedly, America was built on the idea of freedom and equality. But for African Americans, this was simply not true. Many public speakers spent their whole lives trying to rally support for the civil rights movement, but they had to find impactful ways to portray their message in order to change people’s minds. One of these ways is rhetorical strategies which Martin Luther King Jr. used to emphasize his points in his famous “I Have A Dream” speech. Some of the strategies King utilized include repetition, pathos, and imagery.
