SAT Practice Essay 1 “Arctic National Wildlife Refuge: Seasons of Life and Land” is written by Former President Jimmy Carter in his response about the Arctic National Wild Refuge being preserved and kept safe. Carter is most definitely able to backup his point about this subject by using different forms of rhetorical devices such as logos, ethos, and pathos. First of all, logos appeals to the reader’s common sense, beliefs, and values. For example, cause and effect are used in this article as well as facts and data. In the ethos category there are examples of personal experience and identification with the readers. An example of personal experience in this article is when Carter is talking about what it is like there. He says: “One of the most unforgettable and humbling experiences of our lives occurred on the coastal plain. We had hoped to see caribou during our trip, but to our amazement, we witnessed the migration of tens of thousands of caribou with their newborn calves. In a matter of a few minutes, the sweep of tundra before us became flooded with life, with the sounds of grunting animals and clicking hooves filling the air.”(Carter par.3) This is an example of personal experience because it explains how he has been there and experienced the place to its fullest. The next example of ethos that the article includes is identification with the readers. He makes this possible by saying: “It is a symbol of our national heritage, a remnant of frontier America that our first settlers once called wilderness. Little of that precious wilderness remains.” (Carter par. 8) This is an example of identification with the readers because he is basically saying that this is our nation and you, the reader, should care about the Arctic Refuge because it is apart of our American
Two-hundred and nine thousand. That is the number of lives that were nobly given to save the many during the invasion of Normandy (D-day and the Battle of Normandy). The courageous men and women fought continuously for days on end, climbing the jagged cliffs of Normandy, France. Under rifle fire from gun nests from above, the allied troops were able to take control of the coastline, but not without great sacrifice. The speech given by Ronald Reagan was made to commemorate those who fearlessly fought for our country and the many thousands that gave their lives during those hard days of war. His speech had a clear message, to honor and remember those who gave and risked their lives during the invasion of Normandy.
Jimmy Carter is a well known Democratic president who served between 1977 to 1981 who strongly opposed opening the Arctic Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling. His writing on the preservation of the refuge came after his term as president while new proposals were being put forward for drilling. Carter’s argument is very effective at encouraging the National Arctic Wildlife Refuge to be protected. Carter effectively uses logos, ethos, and pathos to construct a strong argument for the refuge to be preserved.

Ronald Reagan, the former 40th president of the United States died on June 5th of 2004. A couple of days later on the 11th, Margaret Thatcher the former Prime Minister of Great Britain, wrote an eulogy for Ronald Reagan. In this eulogy, Thatcher uses rhetorical strategies to convince her readers into believing what she states. She uses the strategies of parallelism, pathos and diction to get her message out and to help her reader receive it. And thus Thatcher can convince her readers into believing what she says.
Not only is Ethos and Pathos used effectively in the speech, Logos is as well. Though the use of Logos is used much more indirectly than either of the latter, it is still an important component of the speech. Adm. Mcraven uses Logos by providing support for his statements and lessons taught throughout the speech. For example, Adm. Mcraven explained how one individual could ultimately change the lives of eight-hundred million people by only changing the lives of ten in their lifetime. He supports this claim with mathematical reasoning and evidence, “Ask.Com says that the average American will meet 10,000 people in their lifetime. That's a lot of folks. But, if every one of you changed the lives of just 10 people — and each one of those folks changed the lives of another 10 people — just 10 — then in five generations — 125 years — the class of 2014 will have changed the lives of 800 million people.”
In The Coddling of the American Mind, logos used throughout the article. Logos is an appeal to logic from the author, and is a way of persuading an audience by reason. One logos example is the different generation statement the article provided. Childhoods has changed a significant amount during the past generation. The generation growing up before and a little after the 80’s remember riding their bicycles around their hometowns, unsupervised by adults, by the time they were 8 or 9 years old. In the hours after school, kids were expected to keep themselves busy and learn from their OWN mistakes. They made this claim because parents from this generation are more protective about their children. It is hard to see kids out in the streets riding

The last device that Krakauer uses is ethos. Ethos is an ethical or credible appeal of persuasion for the reader. Krakauer establishes that he is fit to interpret McCandless’ actions because he can relate it to McCandless himself, providing us with enough information to understand McCandless’ actions. By using ethos, the author demonstrates that he is fully aware and is qualifies to write about and make comparisons with Chris McCandless and himself. Meanwhile, he uses these strategies to show that McCandless was well qualified and, intelligent enough to make his own decisions regarding Alaska. The main reason why Krakauer wrote this book was because he felt a connection to McCandless.
Martin Luther King Jr. used logos in a beneficial way at the start of the text. King stated that; I think I should indicate why I am here in Birmingham, since you have been influenced by the view which argues against outsiders coming in. (King 1) He answers this statement by saying; I have the honor of serving as president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference… So I along with several members of my staff, am here because I was invited here. I am here because I have organizational ties here. (King 2)
I decided to read the “Crisis of Confidence” speech by President Carter, as I was in high school during this period of history. As a young man, during this period of history, I along with my peers, was too busy with life (school, work, volunteering, sports, and girls) to really pay attention, or watch, read or listen to anything of a political nature. I recall the general mood of displeasure of the times, but have blocked much of it from my memory, choosing like most people, to only remember the good times.
On January 11, 1989, President Ronald Reagan sat at his desk in the Oval Office to address his nation for the final time. This rhetorical moment was not the first of its kind. Rather, the Farewell Address is a Presidential tradition, started by George Washington, that every president takes part in before leaving office. As a sort of “goodbye” to the nation, the President discusses the accomplishments of his administration while offering pieces of advice for the future. Washington warned against a government with an “unmoderated” political party system (Spalding 75), Ronald Reagan warned of the effects of an America devoid of patriotism.
Logos: It is an appeal to the mind with the use of logic, rationality and critical reasoning to persuade the audience. The author uses logos in his article to make a logical connection with the topic. For example, the author uses the explanation of ideas in the article and employs lots of diagrams in each parts of the topic to show the visualization to support his evidence which is very informative because the visuals give lots of information about what the article is about and that to get attention of the audience.
Logos means reason. Martin Luther King Jr. uses logos to show why he is delivering this speech and why he wants things to change. He is delivering this speech to show how many blacks and other races, that weren’t being treated equally, really didn’t have freedom like they should. “It would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment and to underestimate the determination of the Negro.” (King, M. L. Jr. (1963, Aug.28) Para 6) “Instead of honoring the sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check which has come back marked ‘insufficient funds.’” (King, M. L.
