Ronald Reagan once said “If we ever forget that we are one nation under god, then we will be a nation gone under.” In the “Inaugural Address of John F. Kennedy”, Kennedy uses many rhetorical devices throughout the speech to clarify his message. The message Kennedy is trying to get across is that people should unite together and become peaceful with one another and other nations. In the speech, Kennedy uses the rhetorical devices alliteration, anaphora, allusion, and antithesis. The use of these rhetorical devices helps to awaken the audience to let them know that we can all get along with each other, without fighting with each other. Kennedy used the rhetorical device, alliteration in his inaugural speech to help build the persuasiveness of his message. Alliteration helps to focus the reader’s attention on a specific part of the text. Alliteration is the repetition of the same sounds at the beginning of successive words. Kennedy used alliteration when he stated, “same solemn.” This enhances the impact of the speech by creating a rhythm. For example, the “s” sound in “same solemn” sort of makes you form a tongue twister when saying the two words. Moreover, the way alliteration was used in his speech, establishes a mood. By setting the mood, the reader may feelings may be evoke, whereas their emotions will be based off of their perception of the speech. The mood of this speech was strong and compassionate.
