What is feminism? The definition is often argued over by feminists and anti-feminists. Feminists believe that the expectations for women are far too high to be attainable for most—they are expected to be the perfect weight, the perfect height, the perfect everything in the eyes of society in order to be seen as worth anything. Feminists believe that women are seen by society as less powerful, less smart, simply less than men. Feminists also believe that feminism promotes gender equality, not misandry. They aim to fix this. Anti-feminists, on the other hand believe that feminism is women being obnoxious and putting themselves above men. They think feminism in 2015 in unnecessary. Women already have the right to vote, what more could they possibly want? This oppression is just one reason why feminism exists and—in my opinion—is extremely important in today’s world.

Both men and women are equal regardless the gender. There are many misconceptions when it comes to the word feminism such as, women having hatred towards men, women thinking they're above men, or only women can be feminist, and the gender stereotype. Due to the lack of manpower during the years of 1940 -1945, women had to maintain the jobs held by men. However, this change of attitude involving women in the workforce permeated the beginning of the Women Rights Movement. During and immediately after the Second World War, women became free to create their own lives and senses of individualism. With this increase in freedom also came an increase in equality. The war gave more and more women the chance to prove that they were just as capable as men. Greater numbers of women began to take control. For the first time, women in the United States were learning to work as factory workers, nurses, and journalists. Many women even joined the army through an organization called the Women’s Army Corps.

According to dictionary.com, feminism is the doctrine advocating social, political, and all other rights of women equal to those of men. Throughout history and even in present time, women have been subject to unequal treatment by their male counterparts. For example, in the biblical story of Adam and Eve, Eve is born from Adam’s rib, showing that Adam is the dominant figure in the narrative. Even today, there exists in certain professions a gender pay gap. Similarly, the way in which women are depicted in Beloved by Toni Morrison and the short story The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Stetson indicates that women are able to thrive independently and take on masculine roles, while men are able to experience feminine attributes.

Feminism was coined in the early 20th century. It is a women’s movement with the focus of gender relationships. There has been many different waves of feminism in the United States throughout history. Liberal, Radical, Marxist and Cultural Feminism are just a few examples. Within the different waves of feminism, there has also been racial inequality.

Throughout the history of the world women have often been subjected to fewer rights and to a lower social class than that of men. In most societies the traditional role of the woman was the role of wife, mother, and caretaker. Women endured this type of prejudiced behavior since the dawn of time until the first women’s movements began to develop during the 1800’s in the United States and Europe. These women’s movements are often referred to as feminist movements or feminism. However, the problem of whether or not women should be equal to men has been around for much longer than any of us.

Even though the Constitution didn’t explicitly exclude women from voting rights, juries, or presidents, women were treated as second class citizens without sharing equal civil rights as men. Finally, after over seven decades’ activists’ dedication, women were granted the fundamental right to vote in 1920, and it is protected by the Supreme Court. The role of women in the United States has changed dramatically in the past century, and women are increasingly working as a full-timer in the paid job market rather than being dependent housewives. However, as of today, women still need to fight for equal civil rights as men because unfortunately, somehow unequal treatments still strongly remain. Underserved women are a group of female citizens who are somehow treated unjust in terms of payment, healthcare, and education opportunity.

On Twitter there is an account called Menist. This account was created to make fun of the many harshly feminist accounts on the same site.Though the account is primarily satire, there are still many groups of feminists that verbally, and occasionally physically, harass the account and those who follow it. At one point the creator of the account sold shirts that only said #MENIST. Quickly following the release many people tweeted at the account stories of people judging them or abusing them for doing nothing but wear the shirt. This level of prejudice against a group has been in America for a long time. It was touched on in “Second Inaugural Address” by Abraham Lincoln, “Declaration of Sentiments” by Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and “Runagate, Runagate”

For many years, women have aimed for gaining equality with men. They’re opportunities were taken away because of the fact that they were women. Overtime feminism has expanded and diversified in many different aspects including approach and priorities. The changes in them are result of many different social economic groups of women because of the various goals set for methods of creating change, which are implemented within the movement. The feminist movement has been trying to give equal rights to women who have been destitute of their equality and privileges that man have never given them. Feminism is beneficial to men, women, and their families because it is allowing everyone to have an equal opportunity in life to achieve all they can without any discrimination based on their sex.

I am a woman living in a world where nearly everything is done by women and yet controlled by men. It doesn’t matter if that work is within the home or in the public workforce. Women are seen as the driving force behind much of the work that is being done. In nearly 40% of all American households, women are the primary breadwinners and provide the majority of the household’s income (Shaw and Lee, Women’s Voices Feminist Visions, pg. 470). But that hardly matters. Men are still seen in nearly all of the higher positions of control in this country. “Only 20 (or 4 percent) of Fortune 500 companies have women CEOs… or presidents and only 8 of these are actually in the top Fortune 100 (Shaw and Lee, Women’s Voices Feminist Visions, pg. 493). And how infuriating is that? But many men are blind to many of these inequalities, so let’s get real for a minute and throw down some knowledge.
