In shakespeare's time women were thought of more submissive and passive people whereas men were known as the dominant ones but in the play Macbeth, Shakespeare tries to turn this around by showing us how much power women can have under any circumstances. People who lived in the Elizabethan era were very intrigued to see the play “Macbeth” because they wanted to see how Shakespeare illustrated a woman with a powerful role, they were used to having power over women.

In the play “Macbeth” William Shakespeare portrays how women can be influential, evil and strong as seen by Lady Macbeth and the weird sisters in a mysterious and gloomy way.

Lady Macbeth plays a very big role in gender roles and expectation as she switches her personality from feminine to masculine several times throughout the play. When the play “Macbeth” was written women had limited privileges and were looked down on, they were primarily the caretakers of their home. Women were only allowed to clean,cook, maintain the family’s reputation and take care of their children. In the play “Macbeth” Lady Macbeth lures Macbeth to murder Duncan after reading a letter sent by her husband, this is the first sign of Lady Macbeth having power as women were uneducated and did not know how to read at the time. Lady macbeth says that she has to switch her personality to masculine from feminine in order for her and Macbeth’s plan to proceed with the murder of Duncan, she says “ Come you spirits that tend on mortal
