The city-states Athens and Sparta were rivals in ancient Greece. Geographically the two were very close to each other, but they had a very different economy, cultural values, and way of governing. Both city-states had two very different ways of doing things. I will be highlighting the major differences.

In Athens and Rome, citizenship was to be honored and protected. There were many requirements to become a citizen, so not everyone could have it. The Roman Republic allowed free men, women, and children to have citizenship, but the Athens only gave citizenship to free, native-born adult males. Although it might seem like the citizenship system was better in Rome, the system in Athens was better because citizens were given equal rights, Athenians ostracized citizens so there is no dictator, and every citizen could become officials.

Rome had a better form of citizenship for many reasons. The main reasons are they had more citizens, they had a republic system and a senate. One of the main reasons why Rome had a better form of citizenship was because they considered more people citizens. They considered free-native born adult males, free-native born adult females, free-native born male children, female children and sons of freed slaves citizens. In Ancient Greece the only people they considered citizens were free-native born adult males. In Rome, the only people not considered citizens were slaves and freed slaves. Athens and Rome were two powerful civilizations. Their impact still influence us today. About 500 BC, people were no longer considered subjects. They are now called citizens, and had to meet certain responsibilities. If you meet the requirements then you could be granted citizenship. Only certain people could be granted citizenship, and it was to be honored and protected. Athens had a better system then Rome, because the Athenians where more cautious and gave people equal chances for obtaining citizenship. They also did ostracism, and believed in The Old Oligarch.

Rome and Athens were both superpowers during their time and paved the way for modern day western culture. There were a few things that Rome did better though including their citizenship system. The following reasons are why Rome’s citizenship system works better than Athens’. Firstly the Romans allowed a higher number of people to become citizens. The next reason is that Rome made sure that their citizens were playing a role in society. Lastly the Romans had a more organized and efficient senate than that of the Athenians.

The Athenian and Roman governments both had similarities in their form of government, but the differences that they had made them unique because of the parties and rules they lived by. Later on, they changed that law, it was then bothering the father and mother had to be a citizen for the child to be considered a citizen. Sadly the women didn’t get that many rights but they soon they got more status. The Athens also made it to where not only the wealthy can engage in the jury service. In the Athens, you have to be an 18-year-old man to complete military training. On the other hand, in Sparta, you have to be a 30-year-old to complete military training.
