“It is not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves.” This was said by William Shakespeare, which completely goes against the theme of Romeo and Juliet, one of Shakespeare’s most famous plays. William Shakespeare has been, and still is, called legendary because his plays and written work have enlightened poetic literature in the centuries following his time. In Romeo and Juliet one of the messages that he was trying to put out was that fate cannot be changed, and it was received by everyone who read and watched the play. In the film, one reason for the wildness and absurdity is the modernization of now versus then. Not only did the industrialization in the 1800’s and 1900’s change production rate of products and food but also changed entertainment and society itself. There were multiple forms of modernization that was used in the movie, some examples include vehicles, drugs, and guns which gives the movie more liveliness. These are small examples yet they are crucial to the character and plot development because it showed how each scene would look like in this time period, making it more relatable to the audience. This is a reason for showing the increased characterization and the change in the love between Romeo and Juliet and leads to a lot of minor changes in the plot. The Nurse was a caregiver in the play as well as the movie she advised and counseled Juliet and was sent on Errands. Juliet used most of the nurses’ advices and applied them to her love with Romeo. Friar Lawrence was the Friar in the play and the movie he as well, he counseled and advised but with Romeo. The way that both Romeo and Juliet have counselors to advise them is one way how both Romeo and Juliet are similar. The Prince was the law in the play and in todays society the law is the police. Juliet was especially different in the movie because she was about 18 or 20 years old when she was supposed to be 14 years old in the movie. This is one way to show that you have to be a certain age to understand what true love is. Because of the fact that she is older it gives the assumption that it was more physical love. Most teenagers have the same type of assumption that they are in love with someone but haven't spent a lot of time with them. Unlike those characters, some characters such as Mercutio and Tybalt, were not quite what they were in the movie as they were supposed to be in the play.
