Attempting to understand the motivations behind another individual's actions is often the most difficult task for crime prevention. While there are patterns for behaviour that can help researchers to formulate a binary for the a-typical criminal, it is difficult to pinpoint exact behavior as motivated reasoning differs case to case. This weeks readings attempt to incorporate the use of a Routine Activities perspective towards understanding the typology of mass murderers. While routine activities theory generally focuses on the victim of a crime, the implementation of this theory proves useful due to the consistently missing link in studying mass murderers which is , offender motivation. According to the article, contrary to mass media perceptions the majority of mass murders take place in rural settings. After increased security following the events of a highly publicized mass murder, why do “copycat” crimes even occur? As a result, I believe an improved understanding for this perspective comes from Gottfredson and Hirschi’s General Theory of Crime. This theory focuses on low self control that limits one's ability to avoid frustration or cope with major stressors. Due to the majority of mass murderers committing their crimes out of a major stressor in life this theory would provide an interesting perspective for understanding the motivations of mass murderers, which is often the missing link for ensuring prevention against subsequent
