To the Review Committee,
Growing up with a family lineage of successful occupational therapists along with a developmentally disabled cousin, really helped motivate me to pursue a career that has the life changing ability to help others with similar disabilities. Witnessing my cousin Safiah grow up with autism really inspired me to give back and dedicate my life in helping others with similar circumstances. Seeing her experience sudden tantrums, and having a hard time understanding others really motivated me to make a difference and pursue a career in pediatric rehabilitation. I would always go over to their house and help her with school as I watched my aunts as occupational therapists assist her with different exercises to strengthen her

My trip to India in the summer of 2014, instantly changed my life. There, I visited an orphanage and rehabilitation center for autistic children who were abandoned by their families at a very young age. I sat with the children at the orphanage as the therapists allowed me to preform activities with them such as feeding, doing arts and crafts and gymnastic exercises. Nine-year-old Zara, suffered from a disintegrative disorder which enabled her ability to speak, and walk properly. The orphanage coordinator that I spoke with told me her parents had abandoned her on the side of the road when she was only three years old, because they were unaware of her condition couldn’t afford treatment. I met other children in the orphanage that were in similar circumstances as Zara, and realized international advocacy and awareness is a crucial aspect in putting an end to this unfortunate phenomenon. Educating individuals of the various disorders that children may be born with is something that is very important in making a change in communities similar to Jaipur, where families and parents are unaware of the commonality of these disorders and their symptoms.
Occupational therapy is a field that involves the characteristics of patience, compassion, and sensitivity; all of which I deeply value and have attained from my past
I didn’t know what I wanted to be at the time, but the medical field sparked my interest. I went up there, and I met a woman by the name of Pam who worked as an occupational therapist at a nursing home. She showed me around and introduced me to her patients. I love everything about her work. She would show simple tasks, such as cooking an egg, to her patients and helped them try to master it. Pam even showed them how to sit in the toilet seat by themselves. I observed and even helped her sometimes, and I loved the feeling of helping them get a step closer to living independently. Recently, I talked to the occupational therapist in the school at De Queen, and she told me that she has 32 kids that have Down syndrome or have some sort of disability problem. Her name is Kim, and she sees them twice a week for 30 minutes. She helps them recover or develop fine motor skills, visual and social participation skills, and problem solving skills. According to Kim, she states that occupational therapy and OTA is a career in which you help a person try to become independent in doing daily normal tasks, and she loves her job because she gets to see the progress every child makes. I knew that this was the career I wanted, and I was glad that UA Cossatot offered it. An occupational therapy assistant not only help patients recover daily skills, but they help them live
In this day and age, there are so many health careers out there most people don’t even know where to start when looking for an occupation that truly interest them. I’ve spent my whole life not knowing what I wanted to grow up to be and worrying about not knowing what to study in college. This past year I have recently been looking into Occupational Therapy. This form of therapy is to help those recuperating from physical or mental illness that encourages rehabilitation through the performance of activities required in daily life (What Is Occupational Therapy?, n.d.). People who work in this field are referred to as Occupational Therapist.
I have had many experiences that may have an impact on my career as an Occupational Therapist. When my grandfather suffered a stroke in 2009, I watched therapist closely and asked many questions so that when he was discharged I would be able to help out at home. Occupational therapist helped my grandfather learn how to do basic daily activities again which he could no longer do due to the stroke. Going through this life changing experience I believe will have an impact on my career as an occupational therapist. The compassion and knowledge shown to my family and I during this time is something I can use when I begin my career as an occupational Therapist. When my granddad was in the rehab center after suffering from a massive stroke I closely
Professionally, I’ve had the opportunity to hold four different jobs that all revolve around catering to people. Through working at the grocery store, the landscaping business, the student services at my University and by being a camp director for summer youth sports programs I have gained valuable experience with people of all ages. Along with this, I had the opportunity to be a part of a mission trip that went to New Orleans a few years after the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina. It was moving to be able to help the citizens in need and see how strong willed they were after such a recent disaster. Personally, I believe that even the things I do in my free time have aided me in my preparation for the career of occupational therapy. Whenever I have open leisure time I am either running or playing music in my band. Running has made me a good planner and someone who doesn’t quit as training for long runs such as marathons takes as much mental toughness as physical toughness. Also, being a band member has required a lot of practice, planning and organization. I must practice to keep my skills on par, stay organized and communicate effectively with my band mates to write songs and hold practices. All of my experiences have aided me in my preparation for becoming an occupational
As a sophomore majoring in health science, the goal I have is to pursue a career as an occupational therapist. This career gives me plenty of opportunities I can only benefit from. Whether it comes from job security, steady income, occupational therapy allows me to use my abilities to help someone regain the abilities they once had. To be able to change the life of others as a career seems to be the most rewarding opportunity I could ever take. In order to achieve this goal of being an occupational therapist, there is a long journey of schooling and getting licensed ahead of me.
Many times when a people think of an occupational therapist, they might think of a career counselor and personality tests. They might think of a therapist telling that this job would be “the perfect fit with their personality”. But that is far from what occupational therapy is. Occupational Therapist work with people recover and learn skills that are valuable to be part of society. Occupational therapists work with all age groups of people. They work with people who need assistance due to serious health problems (stroke heart attack amputation), delay in growth (mainly in children), or pyschological problems (Alzhemier’s, PTSD) (“Modern occupational thereapy”). They teach patients the
The profession of occupational therapy has many up and downs since its inception. To regain and remain in power, we shall “reflect more on power, learn to capture it, and become strategic in its use, while remaining ethically guided, we will be better able to serve the public good” (Clark, 2010, p266).
An occupational therapy degree will significantly help accomplish my immediate and long-term professional goals. It will provide a qualified education and a fulfilling lifelong career that will enable me to support myself and my future family. It will also allow me to work in a satisfying career that improves the quality of life of others by pushing them to reach their best potential. As I develop the necessary skills through this degree, I will be more equipped to give hope and love to those who struggle in various ways. I want to help put a smile on someone’s face as they finally overcome pain and difficulty while gaining, or regaining, the ability to perform day-to-day tasks. An occupational therapy degree will put me on a direct course to reaching these
Seeing and feeling like you have cured or helped someone is a very rewarding feeling. Occupational therapists fall under the health science career cluster. OT’s help troubled patients with their fine motor skills through therapeutic activities.
My plans are to give back to my community by working as an occupational therapist at our local hospital, the Fairfax Community Hospital. My strengths are definitely housed in my communication skills, and I love being an aid to others. This career will fulfill my desire to encouragingly help individuals gain independence. One day when there was no school I spent my day job shadowing the occupational therapist at the Community Hospital in Fairfax. My interest of becoming an occupational therapist came from my mom. My mother is a nurse at the Family Medical Center in Rock Port, Missouri. My interest has never been medical, but my mother suggested this career for me because of my personality. Being an aid to others is my dream career. Helping one
Occupational Therapy is a type of therapy that works on everyday skills like writing and reading, and also they help with kids who need assistance walking and talking. Most occupational therapists can be found in schools, doctors, and hospitals. Their goal is to help kids live a better and more effective life. School occupational therapist, like the one I am job shadowing, she works with mostly with young special needs children ages ranging 4 to 6 years old. Occupational therapy can be found with all ages ranging from young to old. I personally would love to pursue a career as an occupational therapist that works with smaller kids and special needs kids in schools.
Occupational therapy is designed to help patients regain skills related to activities of daily living. Individuals may require this therapy if, as the result of an illness or injury, they have
In accordance with Occupational Therapy Practice Framework (OTPF), “the efforts directed toward promoting occupational justice and empowering clients to seek and obtain resources to fully participate in their daily life occupations.” (Occupational Therapy Practice Framework, 3rd Ed., p. S41). I consider occupational therapy to be a compassionate career, practitioners try to grant their clients’ wants and needs to better suit the
