The author of “The scarlet Ibis,” James Hurst, suggests through the actions of his characters and his use of language the theme that too much pride can lead people to do things that can have devastating results. James Hurst quoted, “But all of us must have something or someone to be proud of, and Doodle had become mine.” The narrator has a need to make Doodle better to give himself something to be proud of and receive recognition for his actions. The narrator is talking about an event that happened in the past when he tried to teach his brother, Doodle, to walk. He looks back on it with the insight of an adult who has struggled with the consequences of his prideful actions.
Moreover, Zaroff took his racist practices to the extreme, choosing who to kill based on their ethnicities. Though both Zaroff and Brother were the causes of the death, Brother feels guilty while Zaroff remains emotionless. In “Scarlet Ibis”, the narrator has a brother with a disability. The narrator, referred to as Brother, finds his younger brother’s physical limitations to be embarrassing, which causes Brother to push Doodle past his limits. “The Scarlet Ibis” is the story of two brothers and their complicated relationship. The younger of the two, Doodle, is developmentally delayed and struggles with everyday tasks. His eldest brother teaches Doodle how to accomplish these tasks. Brother’s initial intentions to teach his invalid little brother to walk start out of love, but soon are formed from prideful motives. Despite his brother’s pride, Doodle strives to please him by cooperating, because he loves his older brother. After Doodle’s passing, Brother’s tangled web of pride is straightened out again to reveal his pure brotherly love and how much he misses his little brother. In James Hurst’s “The Scarlet Ibis”, the most prominent emotion is love because of the powerful role it plays in the brothers’ interactions with one another.
The relationships shared by brothers and sisters can often be very complicated. We sometimes have expectations for our siblings and are disappointed when these expectations are not met. In the short story "The Scarlet Ibis", James Hurst writes about the struggles and hardships of two young brothers. The younger of the two children, Doodle, is born physically handicapped and has many struggles throughout his life trying to do everyday things like walking or just being a kid. His older brother is cruel to him but Doodle responds by thriving and becoming more capable of everyday activities in spite of the treatment, until he dies trying to please Brother. The narrator in the story causes Doodle's death by being jealous, disappointed, and because of his pride.
The “Scarlet Ibis” is a short story about a boy born with a medical condition, and his brother, who means well but is self absorbed. The story starts off about a grown man who recalls to the time when his little brother, Doodle is with him. Can you imagine being so overcome by pride that you let it take control and hurt someone close to you? In the short story, “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst, the narrator has an internal struggle with too much pride which leads to bad decision making. As a child the narrator, wanted a little brother who would play and be just like him. But much to his dismay, his brother’s chance of survival were slim. Even when he did end up surviving, he could not even walk. Doodle, the name given to him by Brother, was small and fragile. That meant he would not be able to play and run around with Brother. So Brother decided that he would teach him. Pride is a common trait for humans but too much of it can lead to demise, and that demise just happened to be Doodle’s.
People being killed every day because they are different. The story “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst is about a boy with a disorder that made him different from his family. But it's not okay to kill someone just for own Pride.
The dangers of cruelty in life ultimately overpower emotions and decisions of higher quality. Difficult decisions are made daily, and the compelling idea of satisfaction leads people to make choices for the sake of themselves. The emotions that potentially can happen because of those decisions are captivating, resulting in cruel outcomes. An author that portrays this idea through a character is James Hurst. In his work, “The Scarlet Ibis”, Hurst develops a relationship between two brothers using the idea that cruelty ultimately overpowers love. The brothers, Doodle and Brother, experience events that cause them to make valued memories, but also break close bonds. Through these experiences, Brother begins to accept his disabled brother, Doodle, for his limitations. Doodle has to be extremely cautious due to his disability, never letting an emotion or feeling become too strong. Some events lead Brother to show affection towards Doodle, but others prompt him to do just the opposite. Hurst uses Old Woman Swamp and the coffin as symbols in, “The Scarlet Ibis”, to assist in demonstrating the highs and lows of Brother and Doodle’s volatile relationship.
Through point of view, and symbolism The author diligently characterizes Brother as dedicated and prideful helping the reader relate to his undying determination to help Doodle develop. When Brother first discovers how deeply he adored Doodle he is unaware of the severity, he says “ a seed that bears two vines, life and death.” In his moment Brother has developed devotion towards Doodle and Brother’s “pride is a wonderful, terrible thing”. Brother’s pride has several layers alone, excluding other characteristics which come together to artfully make the character. Altogether his pride consists of two major layers; the pride of how far Doodle has come and how far he can go, and the shame of Doodle and how underdeveloped he is physically. Through
In James Hurst’s short story “The Scarlet Ibis”, the Brother pushed Doodle to learn how to walk, swim, run and various activities so that Doodle would not seem to be crippled. Through the Brother's characterization, conflicts and eventual resolution, Hurst suggested that one's overwhelming selfishness, pride and cruelty can result in the death of a loved brother.
The setting of “The Scarlet Ibis” helps prepare the readers’ state of mind from the very beginning. In the first place, the story takes place at the end of World War I and represents the internal conflict the narrator has as he struggles between guilt of his younger brother’s death and the acceptance of his brother’s disabilities. With this in mind, the narrator is abashed over Doodle’s inability to walk because he thinks disabilities are shameful, and he wanted a brother who was athletic, outgoing, and adventurous. For this reason,”When Doodle was five years old, I was embarrassed at having a brother of that age who couldn't walk, so I set out to teach him (Hurst 417).” The narrator admits to going out of his way to train Doodle to walk because he has so much pride that it is getting in the way of more important goals, meaning he would rather have a “normal” brother than a happy one. The poor treatment of his brother ultimately leads to Doodle’s death. Furthermore, he forces Doodle to do things unwillingly, such as touch his own coffin and train him to be “normal”. The narrator traumatizes his little brother to think a certain way in order to become accepted by society. Even
There are multiple themes throughout “ The Scarlet Ibis”.The strongest theme in the story is that you should not do things for the benefit of yourself all the time, you should do things for the benefit of others also. His selfishness is shown in this line of the story “ they did not know that I did it for myself; that pride,[...] and that Doodle walked only because I was ashamed of having a crippled brother” (Hurst 468).Even though Doodle finally walked, his brother helped him for his own good, which shows his need to help himself before others. He taught Doodle how to walk for his own selfish reason that he was “ashamed” of him (Hurst 468). This shows the reader that doing things for your own benefit can have a negative effect on you.
In this piece of prose, my aim was to make the plot feel as realistic as possible for the reader by allowing them to experience the protagonist’s emotions through the use of first person narrative and numerous literacy devices. I wanted to achieve a clear development of the protagonist’s emotions and character by thoughtfully using different structural techniques, such as varied grammar and punctuation, to show how her emotions change. I found both would be effective to captivate and interest the reader as for most people the more realistic a story is the more compelling it becomes.
To begin, the reader must first understand the type of character He is along with the deterioration of the state of his mental stability. Upon analysis of He, it can be deduced that the main character is known as a round character. A round character is defined as “complex and multi-faceted and acts in a way that readers might not expect but accept as possible” (Mays, A2). He meets the criteria to be labeled a round character due primarily to analysis of his actions throughout the fiction, wherein He has a nervous breakdown which completely shifted the immediate feel of the story. He exhibits a multi-faceted nature as the story unfolds because the author eventually admonishes to the reader the details of the main character’s childhood, along with announcing the presence
