Is feminism displayed in the Scarlet Letter? The Scarlet Letter, a novel about a women who committed adultery and was publicly shamed for it, was written in the 1850s by a man named Nathaniel Hawthorne. He makes feminism present in the scarlet letter; this can be seen through Hester Prynne making a life for herself, the definition of the modern word relating to Hester's ability to be brave , and the examples of Hester Prynne caring for her child as Hawthorne displays in his novel. Commonly, the birth of a child is a joyous event celebrated by many, but not for Hester Prynne. This women had committed adultery, and in the 1600’s this sin was held to an evil significance in the towns peoples hearts. She, and her child Pearl, were hated by many. In the novel a townsperson says, "women it is they badge of shame"(Hawthorne, 165). This quotes shows the disdain the people had for Hester and for the sin she took upon. Hawthorne also states, “where she was made the common infamy, at which all man kind was summoned to point its finger” (117). In the town Hester was well known for her past actions and often was the laughing stock for the people. Despite all of the hatred she was still able to make a life for herself using the talent she had, sewing. On page 122 it first mentions Hester's talent, “She possessed an art that sufficed , even in a land that afforded comparatively little scope for in its exercise, to supply for her thriving infant and herself” (Hawthorne).
