In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee there are a variety of different challenges faced in the 1960s, but with a twist. Instead of being narrated by an adult, it is narrated from the viewpoint of a child. One of the hardest problems the child, Scout Finch, faces is being surrounded by prejudice citizens that live in her town. She can’t quite understand why the people aren’t as accepting as her and the entire Finch family is. The same problem of prejudice is shown during the time of Hitler’s dictatorship as well. The mass amount of death of the Jews at that time all comes back to one problem, prejudice. Hitler was born on April 20th, 1889. It has been proven that he had grown up in a strict environment. His father was hard on him. Hitler was …show more content…
The Nazi’s were a group of people that sided with Hitler, and believed that Germany should have a pure race. They felt as though all Jews were bringing Germany down. The mass extinction of Jews was the follow up to try and save their idea of a “pure and dominant race.” One of Scout’s classmates, Cecil Jacobs, gives us an example of the understanding kids in that time had about prejudice. Cecil Jacobs tells us “old Adolf Hitler has been after the Jews and he’s puttin’ ‘em in prisons and he’s taking away all their property and he won’t let any of ‘em out of the country and he’s washin’ all the feeble-minded… I reckon they don’t have sense enough to wash themselves, I don’t reckon an idiot could keep hisself clean… he’s rounded up all the half-jews too and he wants to register ‘em in case they might wanta cause him any trouble and I think this is a bad thing…” pg. 327-328. The explanation given shows that even though the kids don’t have all the facts or can’t quite wrap their minds around the idea of prejudice, they still know that it is wrong. Scout battles with it throughout the entire novel. Knowing how people should be treated, and still staying strong in her beliefs when everyone around her isn’t as

As Scout begins to consider people?s opinions about prejudicial behavior she soon feels obligated to understand these racial judgments. Scout, being the curious and forthright girl she is, feels that only way to do so is by interrogating these estimations. ?As Atticus had once advised me to do, I tried to climb into Jem?s skin and walk around in it? (57). At this specific point in the novel, it is clear that Scout has learned a valuable lesson. The social lesson accomplished is never to judge anyone before determining their past experiences or hardships. Not only Scout?s social well-being, but her mental and emotional well-being progress extensively throughout the events of the novel. This is clearly defined by the following quote. ?Atticus had promised me he would wear me out if he ever heard of me fighting anymore, I was far too old and too big for such childish things, and the sooner I learned to hold it in, the better off everybody would be?(74). The quote stated by Scout proves that she is willing to mature at such a crucial time as the trial. She discovers that it is more important for Atticus to

As the children grow up, the veil of childhood leaves them, revealing the evil and prejudices hidden under the exterior of their neighbors, and discover the harmful consequences of sexism, social hierarchy, and racism.
