Second Life School
Today's schools are mired with problems that are preventing students from receiving the best education possible. Instead of staying the current course, an investment in building schools inside of the virtual world of Second Life for students to attend online would be the best way for students to receive an education. A school hosted on Second Life would mean less money focused on the physical content of a school without sacrificing the social aspect of one.
Educational Equality Schools today do not provide an equal opportunity for all students. In the United States there has been a long history of discrimination on both the social and economic level against its students. Prior to desegregation, schools meant for non-White children were poorly ran. In one case in 1931, the Lemon Grove School District forced 75 Mexican-American children to attend a barn instead of an actual school(Johnson & Joshee, 2007). Despite changes in legislation over the years, there's still a divide in quality of schooling between classes. One example being that the original motivation for Ivy League colleges to

According to the findings of one experiment, students can benefit from the time and experience of interpersonal skills in an online environment(Lindsey & Rice, 2015). Furthermore, another experiment concluded that students who received lesson instructions from a combination of online and in person performed better on average that students using only online or in person instructions(Angiello, 2010). Second Life would provide a level of online learning without sacrificing the social experience of a traditional classroom through the use of avatars in a virtual reality school environment(Bates-Brkljac 2012). For example, a school could create environments for a virtual class trip such as the surface of the Moon that would be difficult to visit in real life(Salmon,
Jonathan Kozol states in his writing “Still Separate, Still Unequal,” that schools that were already deeply segregated twenty-five to thirty years ago are no less segregated now. He brings up some interesting statistics about how certain areas have schools that have been desegregated over the years. While our country has been trying to make the access to learning available to everyone, they also have created different kinds of schools. For example, private and public schools. Private school is usually very expensive and mainly parents who make a lot of money are the ones putting their children in these schools. However, the rural areas of each country cannot afford such expenses. African-Americans or Hispanics are typically the people living
Not all students are given an equal opportunity, especially in the social category race. If a student didn’t view himself white, or viewed as white, he or she wouldn’t receive an education equal to a white student. In the case of Plessy v. Ferguson, the courts ruled that he was not white even though he was seven-eighths white and one-eighth black. Adding to this problem was that a majority of southern states adopted a drop of blood policy, that classified anyone an African, no matter how distant the ancestor. What also was a problem was that all different types of people call themselves all different types of races. Many immigrants from Mexico and Cuba identify themselves as Hispanic, or Latino and Latina, but 87% of Americans born in Cuba and 53% born in Mexico identified themselves as white. Instead of race, many immigrants identify themselves by their countries of origin or world
In terms of education opportunities, including but not limited to, primary school to higher education has been heavily segregated. The idea of separate but equal is a concept that took many years to strike down. In contrast, though it wasn't really equal at all “(d) Segregation of children in public schools solely on the basis of race deprives children of the minority group of equal educational opportunities, even though the physical facilities and other "tangible" factors may be equal.” even if the white seprimest were not lying it would still be wrong.⁹ and it took until 1954 the
The U.S population consists of several different groups of people all of whom have been a part of our nations history because they have been here since the country was formed or have emigrated from their homelands. The population represents people of different backgrounds, cultures, races, etc. These groups of people are not all accepted into society due to the differences in culture and race. In the U.S, Whites are the superior race, which means that non-whites are viewed as inferior. Unfortunately, it is this system of race that affects how different groups are treated within the structures of society, schooling being one of them. David Wallace Adams’, Education for Extinction, depicts the
According to the U.S Education Department, “Eighty-one percent (81%) of Asian-American high school students and 71% of white high school students attend high schools where the full range of math and science courses are offered...Black students (57%), Latino students (67%), students with disabilities (63%), and English language learner students (65%) also have less access to the full range of courses”. What does this tell us about schools in the United States? Although intentions have been good, schools are still promoting racial discrimination throughout the U.S. Discrimination has been proven by surveys on discipline and the opportunities given to non-white ethnic groups. Schools should be more concerned with how students that aren’t white are being treated and analyze the opportunities they are being given.
As you might know, I was part of an online institution for a long time period of time, and from participating in virtual class to an actual classroom was a great change in my academic career. In Queen of Heaven Academy, I would have to login into Populi, which is an online schooling program, which then I would login in to my desired class that I was scheduled to be in that certain day. Then once I was in my class I would usually wait ten minutes until class started. I always like to arrive at all of my classes early. I would sit at computer for long period of time and I did not really participate at all. If I knew the answer to a question I would click the vital hand and I would give the answer. But there were other times that I would like to give my opinion about some things I was confused with the internet? And most importantly its all done on the internet. Sure it’s a great way to get things done. But there is personal connection between one and the teacher. And the same would be with the students. If one would like to speak in class, one would have to raise his or her virtual hand and then people talk and that’s how everyone socialized in class. There was also a chat box were all the students and the teacher would talk mainly before class. Participating was very hugs. Some teachers would stop in the middle of lecture and start asking if everyone was there. I remember where when six people in my history class were not even responsive out of the twenty students. There is a huge difference when it comes to taking virtual classes online to talking classes in a actual
I believe that the problem is that schools tend to not spread equality enough. For example, a wealthy private school are like as a shiny diamond necklace locked in a glass inside of a museum. Government funded schools are in a way like the burglars that always fall short and never get a chance to steal the diamond and achieve their goal. In my opinion, I believe that the only way that schools will ever stand a chance at providing equality would be if they government shut down every entire private schools. It has had a deep impact on authors such as Kozol’s, Tatum’s, and even Ravitch’s who have all put their thought in their essays on how the private schools do stand superior compared to regular schools. Private schools provide so many advantages that belittle minority schools. Dismantling private schools is the only way that schools stand a chance at fostering equality because private schools not only segregates black less fortunate students, but in a way the private schools taunts the minority group by setting high standards that seem impossible to reach unless you were provided the best education that money can buy, which is impossible when you’re in
1. The problem addressed in this paper is the failure of virtual education to perform at levels consistent with the traditional “brick-and-mortar” school counterpart. Virtual school falls under the school choice reform, and on the surface seems like a viable alternative to those who find traditional school to be problematic. Some reasons for switching to a virtual education include overcrowded classrooms that do not allow for one-on-one instruction or differentiation of instruction from teachers due to too many students in the classroom, pacing of the curriculum that is either too fast or too slow, and lack of choice of courses in schools.
The Second Life (SL) experience is a great example on of how society feels more comfortable communicating and engaging through virtual life. Second Life for a beginner is somewhat complicated to navigate it is more difficult when you want to modify your avatar. Based on experience and observation I learned that people make money off this community, people who join SL have the intention of meeting a lover and have personal issues.
I will write about Second Life people call it a game but there is the goal you don't win prizes. Second Life is an online virtual world residents create this world.
Gamification and virtual worlds plays an important part in education. As it has been used in the education of children making the learning process easier, more effective, and efficient, it also makes it fun, making learning a more attractive activity. By implementing gamification and virtual worlds to higher education, the final outcome is to make the learning process more appealing, thus turning it into a more effective way of learning for students in higher education. It is also intended to reduce the time spent studying and increasing the absorption of new information, resulting into better test scores and higher graduation rates.
Today, online learning is used in the K-12 setting to provide courses the local school is unable to offer, to benefit student scheduling, and to help learners with specific needs, including accelerated learners as well as those who don’t thrive in traditional classes. As virtual schooling increases and access to technology grows, the areas of need that it addresses continue to expand..
We all know that learning today has expanded far beyond books and lessons. In our global society, learning includes creating new understanding, respect and appreciation for different people and cultures. Many learning institutions have created joint learning programs in Second Life with great success. Using the various collaboration tools in Second Life, and the Second Life Education email list, it’s easy to connect with other teachers and professors in Second Life who are open to collaborating, sharing, and creating joint learning programs. Because Second Life accommodates synchronous and asynchronous learning, time zones start to melt away.
The aim of the paper was to combine the task-based language teaching (TBLT) approach with the 3D multiuser virtual environment (MUVE) Second Life into the pedagogy of teaching Chinese as a foreign language (CFL) for Chinese language learners in a major Australian university. It also intended to discuss the challenges and benefits of such experience from the perspectives of an expert virtual world user in Australia and three novice users in Taiwan.
To realize this goal, using a qualitative research framework, a vast comprehension of 3D virtual world educational activities is targeted to be presented. As a result, through observation in Second Life, data for 5 online ESL/EFL teachers is used to bring out the result required.
