An examination of the legal liabilities surrounding the developing technology involved in autonomous vehicles in the United States of America

Right now self-driving cars and trucks are hitting the road and will soon be available to the general market . Major companies like Google, Tesla, Uber and Delphi are leading in autonomous cars industry. In the past few years, these companies have made great strides improving this technology. Addressing the concerns for this technology must be concluded before it reaches the general public. Given the current state of automobiles that don’t need drivers the American consumer needs to be mindful that moral decisions this technology is handling puts them at risk due to the fact that this is emerging technology, laws are being made that will shape this technology, and who is choosing who lives and who dies.

While Hollywood’s interpretations of futures where robots take over the human race are highly entertaining, the movie predictions may not be so far from present times. Take the example of the artificially intelligent robot Ultron, from Avengers: Age of Ultron, who was programmed with the task of achieving world peace. Without any specifications, he believed this goal would only be achieved by abolishing humankind. Artificial intelligence (AI), takes instructions very literally and the results will be disastrous in both a physical and mental sense when it starts thinking for itself. In essence, self-driving cars create moral dilemmas and safety concerns regarding artificially intelligent technology being programmed to coexist with humans.

I used a website called piktochart to create my artifact. I split up the infographic area into separate blocks to contain the graphics on how self-driving cars work and the statistics associated with it. I then chose pictures off of the internet that fit the background with a self-driving car and a diagram of one of the cars so I could show each specific part. Through the diagram, an explanation of what each part does to make self-driving cars work is shown. I then added all of my text to explain what self-driving cars help with and what the graphics show. I found some graphs that show how long it will take for the process for self-driving cars to fully evolve and how self-driving cars save you money through insurance costs.

Vehicles that drive themselves is a concept that is often thought about in futuristic movies or science fiction novels. Throughout, history mankind has been fascinated with robots and cars that could work without humans. Advanced technology is getting closer to making these futuristic ideas the real thing. Living in an advanced technological time would society be ready for this to happen and how far away is this from becoming a reality?

According to today's society, we can see a drastic change in technology today. Most Americans today tend to believe that self-driving cars are going to become very widespread over the next couple decades. The purpose of self-driving cars are to dramatically reduce traffic accidents; In other words, self-driving cars will be safer and more efficient than a normal car. For example, Psychologist Peter Hancock in his article titled, “Are Autonomous Cars Really Safer Than Human Drivers” asserts that over 90 percent of car crashes in the U.S. have been due to human error. Self-driving cars are a reality today. Self-driving cars may seem like a good idea, but are they safe. The thought of relaxing and reading a book while your car drives you from place to place may seem appealing at first, but what would happen if the car malfunctioned causing you to have a wreck. Who would be responsible for the damages. Before we all go out and buy these cars, we must consider the potential risks involved.

Do you ever get tired of constantly steering the wheel in different directions to drive? Well, that’s why drive-less/self-driving cars were made. Self driving cars a safe and easy way to get from one location to another.

My parents are stressing out they need to take me and my three siblings to our sports practices that are all in different places but at the same time. Just what are they going to do? None of this will happen if we had a self driving car. In fact my whole family would be able to use a self driving car to help us in situations like this. A self driving car would for sure help my family big time. This new technology that is now being made and perfected will have a huge impact on my family well, of course in a good way.

Horses have been pulling carts for hundreds of years. Passengers never had to put in effort when their “drivers” remembered the way home, but manually operated cars have changed everything; drivers have to constantly make decisions and be paying attention. Now, however, a solution has arisen in the self-driving car. It is like having your own personal chauffeur whenever you need them, making it fun and relaxing to reach your destination. The idea of self-driving cars is growing increasingly popular as science continues to evolve.

It is becoming increasingly apparent that as technology improves, humans may be leaving more and more decision making to robots. We may be far away from the day when we have a robot president, but as I type this many technologies are being built and perfected that have to make choices, some life or death. For example, the self driving car. Let's say that a self driving car is cruising down the road when suddenly two children run in front of it. If it were to swerve to one side it would run into a motorcycle and almost certainly kill the driver, but to swerve the other way would send the car off a cliff, killing the person (or persons) inside. What should it do? It’s a simple question of who to kill, the children, the passenger, or take a chance

I think self-driving cars are a great idea! Why would you want to spend money on risking getting in a car crash when something could drive you? The only reason why The Google Car got into a crash is because it activated its breaks and got rear-ended by another car. The Google company can work on color and shape censers to detect stop signs. Or ad a microchip to every stop sign that could use GPS and a compass to signal when to stop.

Brandy, you asked the question of whose fault would it be if the accident happened with self-driven vehicles. After watching the video, I think the maker of the vehicles would need to give some control to the driver so they can respond if the self-driven vehicle doesn’t. In my opinion, if the car swerved to miss something and hit someone else, the fault would be whatever they swerved to miss. Another point in the video was made asking is it right to swerved to miss what is falling from the truck towards someone that is not wearing a helmet vs someone that is. I do not think anyone would have time to make that type of decision quick enough; they would just react as quick as possible.

A self-driving car is an autonomous vehicle capable of achieving the human transportation capabilities of a traditional car. The vehicle is capable of sensing its environment and navigating without human input. These robot cars mainly exist as prototypes and are only used for demonstrations. Although they are likely to become more widespread, in the future.
