Sexual Selection Poster Title: Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the reproductive success of the five different mating strategies used in one population of side-blotched lizards. Each mating strategy is associated with a phenotypic trait. Hypothesis: If throat colors associated within a lizard population are changed, then dramatic behavioral changes in mating strategy will occur, which will ultimately affect the fitness of each subsequent generation over time. Methods: Each adult within the side-blotched lizard population was given a personalized toe clip and the colors of their throats were rated. Pregnant females within the population were captured and kept in the lab until they laid their eggs. The eggs were

In site one, where the Parahomo fracticranius was discovered, it can be assumed that the habitat for the species was an open grassland due to the fact that other fossils of animals that lived in the area were grazers. Since there were 14 remains of both male and female sexes, it can be assumed that the P. fracticranius lived in a large multi-male, multi-female system. Based on the lectures from class, it is known that for most cases, multi-male, multi-female environments result in polypoly mating (Atkisson Lecture: Primate mating systems and primate evo). Therefore, it can be assumed that the P. fracticranius not only engaged in polypoly mating, but they also had some sexual dimorphism and large testes. The evidence that supports the sexual dimorphism claim can be seen when the body size of the female and male are compared since the male’s body size is 41 kg larger than the female’s.
(860) ii. Regenerated lizard tails are smaller than normal and that repels lizards. iii. Regeneration also have an effect on mate calling 1. The regenerated leg of a female bush cricket can produce smaller hearing organs in its tibia, which makes them less likely to respond to calling males.
The crested gecko lives in New Caledonia, which is northeastern to Australia. This part of the country is tropical and has very humid jungles which keep the gecko’s skin moist. The crested gecko’s body over time has adapted to this environment. In particular its tail,
Analysis on faecal matter showed that turgescence of baboon ano-genital swellings links to the follicular phase of the ovarian cycle, while deturgescence links to the luteal phase, leading to the conclusion that the swellings are under the influence of hormonal control in primates (Gillmann and Gilbert, 1946). This suggests that the role of sexual swellings is to visually indicate the onset of ovulation to male non-human primates. It is observed that swellings indeed attract males independently of olfactory or behavioural cues (Bielert 1982; Saayman 1970) suggesting evolution of this attraction to larger swellings occurred due to the reproductive success associated with it. Males that are able to recognise swellings, discriminate between them and to mate with the female when hers are largest, would have higher chances to sire an infant, resulting in high selection pressure on males to react to swelling state.
Various experiments and measurements were performed in the field in order to compare the two types of rodents. The following is a list of the data collected through multiple observations over a span of two years. We captured 100 rats of each rodent population, and we found the average weight, length, hind limb, and forelimb measurements. In addition, we conducted experiments in regards to their top speed, average height that they could leap, gestation time, and average time spent in the courtship display.
Secondly, we meet Jerry Johnson and his crew in Southwest Texas hunting for unique type of lizard. The lizard’s reproductive procedure is that these female companions have the potential to reproduce with the use of sexual intercourse. Each baby lizard contains 100 percent of its mother’s genes. So with that in mind the baby is an identical clone of its mother. Some have considered that the lizards would have to have some sort of lesbian
The alligator is one of the largest living reptiles today. In North America, they inhabit freshwater swamps or wetlands in the south, from Texas to North Carolina. Distinguishing features include the fourth mandibular tooth, the long, broad snout, and the thick, scaly skin. Like some other reptiles, alligators have temperature-dependent sex determination, which is a non-genetic way of determining the sex ratio of offspring produced. Unlike other reptiles, alligators exhibit parental care; they nest-guard, and even offer evidence of maternal care for juveniles after hatching. Through the reviewing of multiple experiments conducted on Alligator mississippiensis, evidence is provided for the temperature-dependent mode of sexing and maternal
The purpose of this lab is to better understand the process of natural selection and its effects on a population by conducting a stimulation. The stimulation consist of predators (students with either a spoon, fork or a knife) and prey (different types of beans). Furthermore, students will be able to determine how phenotype (bean color and utensil used by the predators) influences natural selection. Students will also demonstrate their quantitative skills by determining the predator survival and reproduction, bean survival and reproduction, and by calculating the total percent of the population. Additionally, students will be able to identify the occurrence of evolution by natural selection after the end of generation three. Moreover, students
Varanus Indicus or commonly known as monitor lizard are mainly found in riverbanks and coastal forrest in Africa and all across Asia. Monitor lizards are tan, brown, grey or green in color. They are reptiles of 4.7 to 122 inches in size. Monitor lizards have long necks, powerful tails and claws, and well-developed limbs. They have a long, specialized tongue with a tip that is highly sensitive to smell and taste. The tongue is extended to pick up scent chemicals, and is then retracted into the mouth where the scents are analyzed using an organ on the roof of the mouth. Their powerful jaws allow them to swallow large prey. The head of monitors is tapered, and there are distinct ear holes. Monitor lizards are omnivorous depending on where they
Julie Carter I see that we all think different and that make us a unique person because the two test I took was Race Implicit Association test and Sexuality Implict Association Test and I see you took two different ones. I understand how you feel that you got to be cautious about the fat and thin because you do not want you daughter feel a type way or be insecure about her weight or how she look , because I got two daughters and my oldest daughter skin and my youngest is short and blessed , I want my daughter to feel comfortable the way they are and I always remind them I love them for who they are and they are perfect the size they are. I grew up working hard and I work and raise my children I am not a stay at home mom .
For this reflective piece, I graded myself 5/5 as I provided reasoning for the features that I allowed this species to have, and the advantages that they would provide in the species’ survival. Moreover, I linked many of the characteristics to it’s ancestor and showed their phylogenetic relationship, and incorporated biological terms to do so. Additionally, I described a range of morphological, behavioural, and physiological characteristics of the species, and provided a labelled visual depiction of what this species would like to aid the understanding of my
The lizard gave virgin birth to 11 eggs, but only 8 seem to be developing normally. They were in different Zoos, at the time researchers speculate that the giant lizards could of change from sexual to asexualreproduction, they found the way to clone themselves without a male. After this was documented, scientists reported about the snakes. Reports show that reptiles can hold on to sperm for several years, so initially researchers considered that the lizard’s eggs had a father. After this happened scientifics recommended that the species should not be isolated, they started to be afraid that they will start to clone
The eggs are soft shelled while being granular-surfaced, and oval shaped. Female Eastern Indigo Snakes have the ability to retain live sperm for a prolonged period of time, possibly over four years, and they later release the sperm for egg fertilization.
Some Interesting facts about the Sand Lizard is that they mate in the early summer to show off their new green patterns to the female lizards. The female lizards lay their eggs in the sand
