Shakespeare in the Bush is an article written by American Anthropologist Laura Bohannan regarding the incident during her fieldwork in Tiv of West Africa. It demonstrated the relationship between culture and literary translation and illustrated the importance of the concept: cultural interpretation. Due to the fact that our culture is never singular, but plural, elders in Tiv had a hard time understanding the “true meaning” of Hamlet. Bohannan has always thought that Hamlet only had one universal interpretation until she altered her thinking after the elders analyzed the plot in their perspective. Bohannan soon realized that things are hardly universal, different interpretations exist in different cultures.
As an anthropologist, Bohannan joined the local story-telling beer party and expressed her understanding of Hamlet to a group of people who had never been in contact with

This notion is similar to the uncommon practices being conducted in others places, such as the Virginity Test in Brazil. (Robbins 2016, 13–14) In both cases, people are thinking from their own cultural perspective that the rest of the world should adapt to their styles of thinking. Later, incorporating the theory of cultural relativism, similar to Indigenous people’s realization that Canadian Hockey is a way to demonstrate success, elders believed that witches represent all the harms. Both cases have to be thought using an emic perspective in order to make them sound appropriate. (Widmer
The great William Shakespeare lived during a time of many noted and influential people such as Pocahontas, King James I, and Sir Walter Raleigh. Even though Pocahontas was born during the later years of Shakespeare’s life, interesting correlations exist between the playwright and the Indian princess. King James I of England wrote about witches, which gave some background information for Shakespeare’s Tragedy of Macbeth. As the special guest of Queen Elizabeth I, it is likely that Sir Walter Raleigh watched some of Shakespeare’s plays presented at court. The daughter of a Native American chief, the King of England, and the famous explorer, all lived and gained notoriety during the lifetime of William Shakespeare.
Shakespeare, in having Julia assumes a male disguise in Two Gentlemen of Verona, plays on “hose,” “codpiece,” and “pins” to emphasize cross dressing in Renaissance England. “Hose,” in the Oxford English Dictionary, comes from the Old English hosa and has the meaning of “an article of clothing for the leg” (OED). Similarly, “codpiece” refers to a “close-fitting hose or breeches worn by men from the 15th to the 17th century” (OED). Together, both “hose” and “codpiece” serve to remind the audience of Julia’s character transformation, undergoing from a female mistress to a male page. What significant about the word “codpiece,” however, is that it is a compounded word of “piece,” which derives from French peece and carries a meaning of “a portion
Many literary critics have presented theories on the meaning of William Shakespeare's Hamlet, ranging from claims of Oedipal Complexes to insinuations of homosexuality. Though most such interpretations can be considered true at some level, there seems to be some basic theme - some driving force - that underlies all other interpretations.
Given the religious turmoil of the time and the horrendous executions to criminals, why did William Shakespeare choose to mostly write comedies? Did Shakespeare not understand the mood of society, or perhaps did he write exactly the type of plays that everyone needed to see? To fully understand why William Shakespeare chose to write of amusing scenarios, its important to know what society in his time was like: sorrowful, argumentative, but also enlightening. Amidst the troubles of religion and despairing sights of death, theater rose to the top of many people’s hearts.
Is William Shakespeare really a Renaissance Man? I believe Shakespeare was a Renaissance man, he wrote many famous plays. I'm sure everyone has heard of Romeo and Juliet, a love story between two people who could never be together because of family issues, which was written by William Shakespeare. Shakespeare is considered a Renaissance Man because he was a talented writer, he was very knowledgeable which showed in his plays. Shakespeare did have a few disadvantages along the way. Many disagree that Shakespeare shouldn't be given the title as the Renaissance Man. People do not see his potential as a writer, because of his lacking background. Because Shakespeare’s school caught on fire, the school lost most of his records.
Although the foundation of the poems reveals the arguments for both public and private life; it is difficult to discern what Marvell truly felt was the better lifestyle. However, one of the underlying themes of both poems are of violence. The violence that Cromwell enacts or is a part of in An Horatian Ode, contrasts the peace and tranquility of the speaker in The Garden. Although Marvell praises Cromwell’s military accomplishments, historically, this was one of the bloodiest and most violent acts in British history. The King was usurped and the country descended into chaos while fighting bloody wars with Ireland and Scotland. In An Horatian Ode, Marvell writes that after the Irish campaign in 1650, the Irish should praise Cromwell for “how good he is, how just, / and fit for highest trust” (79-80). However, Marvell must be aware that Cromwell enacted a vicious attack, genocidal some might argue, on the Irish and even in contemporary times, regard him with shock and horror. The sarcasm or overinflated flattery falls thickly over the poem as Marvell hides his truths and lies within the lines praising Cromwell. Michael Komoroski writes in his paper Marvell 's "An Horatian Ode" and the Ownership of Politics, “Although its author 's intentions in writing the poem and, indeed, the degree of his loyalty to the new regime will likely forever frustrate critical efforts of recovery, we can discern Marvell 's preoccupation with imagining the contours of a newly forming public space

The difference between the world of William Shakespeare to modern America is that the actors were often descriminated against and they were unlawfully treated as we learn from the article "Actors in Shakespeares day" that they were called vagabonds and punished by being arrested and/or imprisoned which was unlawful as no crime was committed. In the article "Not of an age but for all mankind" that the actors were only allowed to be men and there were no women allowed or there would be punishment. Theatres at that time were built with the only light source being from the sun and no lightbulbs or anything like that. This is different from the modern day in society because the source we have today is used by coal but can also be used by the

His father, John Shakespeare, was a prosperous glove maker and wool dealer and was well regarded throughout Stratford, even holding the position of High Bailiff for a time. Young William saw his first play at the age of five from a traveling group of actors. Due to John’s position on the town council, he was responsible for approving the play for public performances. “Logic will get you from A to Z; Imagination will take you everywhere” - Albert Einstein. Why would imagination help writing? Imagination isn’t just for playground fun, or to play a game with your friends. Imagination is simply something that we put in our head to see the unseeable, to think the unthinkable. Shakespeare, the well known playwright that went down in history, not because of his looks, not because of his money, but because of his imagination. He may not use the unicorns, dragons, etc, that we think of when imagination is brought up. Imagination can be realistic too, it doesn’t have to always be about magic, and wishes coming true. Imagination could also be stories about something that could be real but isn’t, deep down shakespeare in all of his writing pieces is trying to tell a message possibly about his early life.
