In the film ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ by Frank Darabont, it gives the audience insight about prison life and the difficult situations in the Shawshank prison. The many characters of the Shawshank prison presents an abundance of social issues. All throughout the movie, issues of sexual assault, police brutality, identity, corruption, and money laundering. The movie also shows the struggle of prison life and afterwards when someone gets released. Darabont also used hope to help portray the social issues in this movie. The director of Shawshank Redemption used various methods to show the audience hope through the main character, Andy Dufresne. Andy was put into the Shawshank prison for the wrongful conviction of the double murder of his wife and her lover. He was portrayed as a well-groomed and very clean prisoner, with his hair always slicked back and combed and his shirt always buttoned. This showed a significant difference between him and the other inmates. Other inmates were usually the stereotypical dirty, mean, and “disgusting” prison inmates. Andy was also far well educated from almost all of the other inmates and had a great job as a banker before he was wrongfully convicted. These differences showed how different Andy was to the other inmates, therefore showing the audience that andy felt hopeful that this wasn't the place for him. That he didn't belong, that maybe he would get out. In the movie Andy develops a friendship with an inmate named Red. Red was the supplier for all of the inmates. He would usually supply them with anything from cigarettes, posters, etc. The first thing that Red got for Andy was a rock hammer, and i think that gave Andy sense of hope of maybe escaping the prison. His friendship with Red gave him some hope to him also because he quickly gained respect with almost all of the inmates at the Shawshank because of it. As a way to forget about prison life, Andy would often keep his mind occupied with various activities. Later in the movie Dufresne is assigned to work in the library, which I think helped him in many ways. He would help the guards with financial advising, as well as doing their taxes. I saw this a hope because doing that type of work was something that he liked to
