Langston Hughes’ coming of age story “ Thank you Ma’am” takes place in a town where a boy is struggling for money. This boy’s name is Roger. Roger thinks he needs money so much that he decides to try and rob that money from a lady’s big and heavy purse . Roger instead falls down and gets caught by the lady. You may think, why would she help him after he did such a thing? It’s because Mrs. Jones thought farther and realized that there could be a reason he did this.

Mrs. Luella Jones is a large woman with a large purse that had everything in it (Hughes 1). Roger is a young, immature fourteen-year-old boy that tries to steal Mrs. Luella’s purse from her side. Roger falls to the ground, and then Mrs. Luella picks him up and asks him why he is so dirty. After she tells Roger to pick up her pocket book, she drags him down the street and takes him into her house where she lets him wash his face and cooks him a meal.

“Kind people are the best kind of people”. This can relate to a weird but kind person in “Thank you, Ma'am, by Langston Hughes. The weird large women are kind because she let a strange boy in her house who stole the large women pocketbook. She also lends money to the boy to buy food at the store all by himself. Also, lets the boy go after letting him stay at her house for the night!
