Similarities And Differences Between Greece And Rome

Rome and Athens were both superpowers during their time and paved the way for modern day western culture. There were a few things that Rome did better though including their citizenship system. The following reasons are why Rome’s citizenship system works better than Athens’. Firstly the Romans allowed a higher number of people to become citizens. The next reason is that Rome made sure that their citizens were playing a role in society. Lastly the Romans had a more organized and efficient senate than that of the Athenians.

Two of the greatest civilizations of the ancient world were the civilizations of Greece and Rome. These two civilizations were especially significant from the time periods prior to the Roman Republic. These two civilizations both affected Europe and the Mediterranean regions including the rest of the world around them. Though the two civilizations differed in location, they also had many aspects that were very similar. One of these includes the government, with both showing the beginnings of the representative government. Another aspect between these civilizations was the military with similar strategies, tactics, and organizational similarities.

Roman culture is a lot like the United States. From the government to the activities to the impact on the places and countries around them. Rome and the United States both used the three branches of government, which are the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches. All the citizens in Rome had to abide by rights and laws made by the branches of government just like the citizens of the United States. Another things their government has in common is that they both use the veto, which was the right to reject a decision by the law-makers. Both of the governments also would have a higher chance of being in debt because both of their imports were greater than their exports. Rome and the United States also both had places for entertainment and played some of the same sports.

The Romans borrowed almost all of its mythology from Greece. The only thing the Romans changed was the names of the Greek gods. And the Greek gods lasted much longer Greece. That is another reason Greece was better than Rome.

The Greeks and the Romans were two empires with similar goals, but contrasting government control. Within Greece were the Spartans and Athenians, which had two diverse governmental bodies. The Spartans were ruthless and focused on military success, while the Athenians lived off of a democracy and let their people decide what was best for the state. Close by were the Romans, who cared for their people liked the Athenians, but made acquiring land a necessity as to the Spartans. Although the Spartans, Athenians, and Romans were made up of different laws and government, they still kept control over their people for centuries to come.

The second major similarity between ancient Greek and Roman civilizations was that their citizens voted on who to make their elected officials, however the difference was that each culture differed in their definition of a citizen. The Greeks only recognized native-born males having the right of citizenship, women and slaves could not be citizens and therefore could not vote. The Romans on the other hand, recognized foreigners residing within Italy as half-citizens giving them full legal rights but not the right to vote. Greece mostly voted into office people of middle- to upper-class citizens, whereas Rome only voted in the rich 10% of their population. Even though history seems to show that the Greeks were more fair by randomly selecting citizens to run for office, the Roman government specifically chose who would run for election similar to our political race today where the Republican and Democratic parties choose who will be there candidates.

Aside from these physical differences, there is a difference in the goals between the Greeks and the Romans. In the first case what concerns the Greek city-states is limited to self-preservation if not individual fame and success. The Romans, on the other hand, were concerned with the success of the country as a whole; they knew that if the whole was successful, then the individual parts would also benefit.

Ancient Greek history has played a vital role in cultures throughout time. From its neighbors in Europe to all the way across the Atlantic, ancient Greece has influenced many nations. From United States to Canada to Mexico, the influence of Greece can still be seen today. While the influence of ancient Greece is grand, there was one place that was so enamored by the Greek way of life, that they seemingly adopted it as its own. The culture of ancient Rome so closely mirrors that of ancient Greek society that it is not uncommon to mix the two up. Since the Roman Empire did not flourish until after the Greek downfall, it is known that the Romans were directly influenced by the Greeks. Assimilation Of Greek cultural traditions created a bizarre situation, in which Rome was culturally Greek, but it was culturally unique, as it still retained influences from early Italians. While it is obvious that the Romans were influenced by the Greeks, one may wonder when this cultural assimilation of Greek culture began. The Roman conquest of Greece was a period in time where The Romans and the Greeks were at war and how eventually Greece became one of the first provinces of the emerging Roman Empire.

We borrowed many things from Rome and Greece. In Rome, we had interest in their law and politics and their literature. In Greece, we had interest in their art and architecture. In both Rome and Greece, we had other interest in other things they had such as mathematics and languages.

Greece also traded near the same places as Rome such as The Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea basin. Unlike the Romans, Greece had a limited amount civilizations they could trade with, due to the fact that Greece was located

The first chief difference in political structure is that Greeks were divided in the city-state political structure as the Romans were unified under one political system through the course of its history (Except the division into the Western and Eastern Empires). The second difference between the two political structures is that the Romans had sort of a parliamentary branch of politics which was the Senate where in Greece executive decisions would be made through the usage of periodic assemblies or through autocratic-dictator type kings. The final chief difference between the two political structures is that during the Roman Empire the emperor was seen as a holy god-like figure in which this type of worship in ancient Greece was not necessarily present. Amongst the many differences between the two political structures, there were also multiple similarities.

The ancient Greeks and Romans were among the most influential civilizations in the history of the world. Even though the Roman Empire eventually conquered Greece, Greek culture lived on within the Empire. The Roman form of government was the foundation of the design of the United States Senate. Ironically, the office of the President of the United States is the same as a tyrant in ancient times, that is a person who appealed of the common people to gain power.’ The Greeks and Romans had many differences, but there are also interesting similarities.

While both Greek and Roman cultures have influenced modern life, they have many similarities and differences. Ancient culture in Rome was influenced primarily through their religion and family structure. The religion of ancient Rome is influenced by their gods. They believe in gods such as Apollo and Pluto. They celebrate their religion

There are a lot of similarities between the Greeks and Romans. An example of a similarity is that they both live in the Eastern Mediterranean countries, but their land was very different. There were also the Alps and Apennine Mountains close by. Another example is that their economy is based on agriculture. The Mediterranean helped them because they were close to the sea and they could transport water to their crops which could help them grow.

Ancient Greece and Rome share many different similarities and differences. They range from topics such as agriculture, art, literature and more.
