To be an epic hero you must be smart, travel a vast setting, be famous, and have a little help from a god. An important quality of an epic is to be smart. Evertt, from O Brother, Where Art Thou, was smarter than most and always had a plan. A great example of Evertts cleverness is when the soggy bottom boys were going to play for the radio he told the owner that there five of them so they could get more money. For Everett in order to get back to his wife, Penny and seven daughters, he had to travel throughout many different parts of Mississippi. Everett met many challenges that stopped him on his way, making his travels longer than needed. Atlas Odysseus’s travels was longer and more spread out. Odysseus traveled for ten years all over the Mediterranean Sea to get back home to his wife, Penelope and son. He too met many challenges that prolonged his homecoming. Fame comes with epic deeds, action, and heros. Odysseus was a famous king and warrior from Ithaca. Everett is famous in Mississippi because he sang very well on the radio with the soggy bottom boys. His popularity spread and sold many albums or records, but was unable to receive any money from it. God or Gods play a part in every epic story. In the Odyssey, the god Poseidon kept Odysseus from home by making the sea take him somewhere else. Another god Athena, disguised Odysseus when he came home and was able to tell that his wife was faithful to him. In O Brother, Where Art Thou, Everett was captured by the police after he escaped out of prison and was about to be hung. For his last words he prayed to God to help him, suddenly there was a flood that covered land helping Everett and his crew

He is the king of Ithaca who goes to fight in the Trojan War. After 20 years, Odysseus finally returns home, although through many obstacles. Once in Ithaca, Odysseus kills the suitors who plague his wife, along with all other disloyal subjects. He fits the definition of an epic hero, which is an admirable character who displays courage while working towards a noble cause. More specifically, Odysseus is an epic hero because he makes complex and important decisions, has supernatural help, and is associated with beautiful women.
We all know that in the Odyssey, Odysseus is considered an epic hero. He goes to different lands, fights monsters, meets women who tempt him, and so on, so forth. Throughout O Brother Where Art Thou, we learn that Everett is an epic hero too. The movie is based on the Odyssey and Everett is an epic hero because of the traits he shows throughout the movie. Everett is an epic hero because he is generous to his followers but ruthless to his enemies. Also, he succeeds in war and adventure.

The lotus eaters from the odyssey were comparable to the christians that were baptized in O Brother Where Art Thou because they were distracting to both crews in their journeys to their homes and made both crews have to overcome obstacles this is shown in their journey home, the christians and flowers pulled them in and, made them forget about their journeys home.
