The theme of these stories is being unprepared can hurt you. In the story “The Ant And The Grasshopper” winter is coming, and the ant is preparing for winter, and the grasshopper is not. The ant spent most of his days gathering food and making shelter. The grasshopper spent his days eating all the food he could find and enjoying the weather. But then winter came and the grasshopper had no food or shelter. While the ant had a lot of food and shelter. Through the whole story the grasshopper is being unprepared. It is important to know the history of “The Three Little Pigs.” As Sutcliffe explains, the story started out as a nursery tale, almost identically to the way it is told today. Around the beginning of the 1900, Grimm printed the story The Wolf and the Seven Little Little Kids. This story is not the exact same as “The Three Little Pigs”, however, it has many parallels. The fact that the story was taken away from the german author, explains why it focuses on family and nature. The personification of the pigs would come from Grimm’s aspect of adding nature. Within any community, it is safe to say that the goal of maintaining a society that prospers on for many years is common. Establishing order is key to developing a prosperous society. Order, whether it be defined as assigning roles in society, or establishing a set of rules to maintain control, can be done through various approaches. The pondering question however lies in what is the best approach to establish order. This common question has been prominent throughout time, and has been debated in government and society. The debate in how society should establish order regularly results in contrasting opinions. In the essay "The Myth of the Ant Queen," by Steven Johnson, and in the excerpt “The Code of Hammurabi” from Society and Law in Ancient Babylonia, two distinct approaches to establishing order in society are discussed. I believe that through strict reinforcements, order in society can be established. In the essay “Man’s Nature is Evil” by Hsun Tzu, the human nature in society helps explain why strict reinforcements is the most efficient way to establish order. In Steven Johnson’s essay “The Myth of the Ant Queen,” he describes an interesting way in how the establishment of order arises. He argues that society can build itself up and maintain order without the need of a ruler or a set of laws. One story that can be directly compared across cultures is The Three Little Pigs, originating in England, where it was first printed in the 1840s, but the story dates back much further. In the original English version, the first two little pigs are devoured by the big bad wolf, who is finally outwitted by the last pig who lures the wolf down the chimney into a pot of boiling water. The Japanese version, however, ends with the same fate for the wolf, but differs greatly in how the wolf reaches that fate. Unlike the English version where the third pig outwits the wolf on his own, the Japanese version tells of how the first two pigs escaped their flimsy homes and worked together with the third little pig to defeat the wolf.

This quote connects to the theme “With power there’s never true equality.” Because although equality should be a given, while there is power present in society, it will never happen. Animal Farm by George Orwell is a novel about a farm that is overtaken by its animals. They assign one pig, Napoleon, to power. He began to only benefit the pigs and the other animals were often oppressed. “Mouseland” by Tommy Douglas is a story about cats leading a town of mice, and making rules that only benefitted the cat, and endangered the mice. The common theme in both these stories is similar to the theme the quote presented, “With power there’s never true equality.” The authors of both Animal Farm and “Mouseland” use the narrative techniques of conflict and characterization to illustrate political messages about power and equality.
The disney film, A Bug’s Life, is a story of an outcast who must rise up as the hero to fix his mistakes in order to ensure the good of the other ants in his colony. His colony is in danger of starving due to unfair demands, and oppression brought upon them by grasshopper bugs who serve as antagonist to the story, and tyrants over the ants. Flik must leave the safety of ant island to seek bigger bugs to save the colony. Flik is only one ant, in a societal structure that changes due to revolution and resistance, and a change of mind.

The story of the “Three Little Pigs” has been around for a very long time. Parents have been telling their children this tale for generations. This story tells the narrative of three pigs, who construct their homes of three different materials, one straw, one wood and one brick. Then, comes along a Big Bad Wolf, who blows down two of the three homes and then focuses on tricking the final pig into coming out of his house so that he too, can be eaten. In this story, the third little pig, who made his home of brick, was the most admirable because he was clever, hard-working and courageous.
