Two kids neither with caring parents, set off into the world, from two different places. Both different on the outside, share the same heart on the inside. Johnny, a hero, is similar to a criminal, Dally. How though? The Outsiders is a 1967 novel on boys from low-income families that face their problems with the socs, the group on the east side of town that is very wealthy, and some bratty. Two characters I’m referencing, Johnny, is the gang’s ‘pet’ and helps the gang get along and come together. And Dally, the tough guy of the gang from New York and finds himself into trouble with the police. In chapter 4, Johnny killed Bob in a self defensive way. He didn’t have to kill Bob. He could’ve threatened bob with the switchblade, or tackled him. This shows that Johnny is violent because he takes the more aggressive way in doing some things. Dally, is always there for a fight and aggressive with everyone. Johnny seems a lot similar to Dally, by showing his aggression. …show more content…
If someone gets into trouble, he is willing to take the blame for anyone in the gang, even if it gets him jailed. Johnny is willing to take one for the team, too. In chapter 6, Johnny didn’t have to go save those kids’ lives in the burning church. He went in and saved all of them, knowing how dangerous it was. He also sacrificed himself for Ponyboy because he got him out right before the church collapsed and Johnny got caught inside the church, taking burns and eventually dying. Johnny will sacrifice himself for others he doesn’t even know and for his gang. Similar to Dally but Dally does it only for people in the
Another similarity that makes Johnny and Dally similar is through their value of life. Dally has never really cared about what happens to him. He goes around trying to break laws and getting caught, going to jail, getting out, and then repeating. He never really cares about how he turns out and what will happen to him. He has never respected his life. He gets in fights all the time and is mean. When he kills himself just because Johnny died, he gave up on the world. Everyone knew he would die like this, “I knew he would be dead, because Dallas Winston wanted to be dead and he always got what he wanted” (154). His value of his life is very little and when Johnny dies he brakes. Similarly, Johnny’s value in life is limited. In the letter he wrote to Ponyboy, he talks about how
Johnny is not justified in what he did and is guilty because he had the intent to kill. Ponyboy talks about Johnny and the previous attack by saying, “He would kill the next person who jumped him. Nobody was ever going to beat him like that again. Not over his dead body…” (Hinton 34). This shows that Johnny was changed by the previous
Dally loves to fight, he has to be at all of the gangs fights he even came out of the hospital for a rumble. Johnny on the other hand is the opposite, he thinks fighting is useless and wants there to be good in the world. On the night of the rumble Johnny and Dally are both in the hospital. Dally did not want anything more than to be in that rumble. Just before the first punched was thrown Dally showed up and says, to the gang “‘ do not you know a rumble ain’t a rumble unless i’m in it?’”(144). Dally pulled a knife on the nurses to get out of the hospital with a burnt arm just to fight in a rumble. While johnny is in the hospital and Ponyboy and Dally went to visit them, they told Johnny that they stomped on the socs. Johnny just says, “‘useless . . . fightings no good.’”(148). After that moment he called Ponyboy over and
Another difference between Johnny and Dally is that Johnny sees good in the world while Dally does not. Dally thinks that there is no good in the world and if you are a greaser, then you are a hoodlum. In Johnny’s letter, it states, “There’s still lots of good in the world. Tell Dally. I don’t think he knows” (152). Johnny is trying to say that Dally should see
Another difference between Dally and Johnny are Dally love to fight and has a huge record with the police, while Johnny hates
Johnny and Dally are basically polar opposites with respect to their personalities. At the beginning of the story, Johnny’s personality is described. The author writes, “Johnny couldn’t say “boo” to a goose… I had never heard Johnny talk back to anyone” (35). It is shown that Johnny is a very shy and sensitive boy. Since Johnny
A distinct difference between the two Greasers are their personalities. Johnny is a very innocent kid. He tries to never break the rules throughout everything he does. “‘Shut up about last night! I killed a kid last night. He couldn’t have been over seventeen or eighteen, and I killed him. How’d you like to live with that?”’(74). Johnny kills Bob Sheldon as an act of self-defense because Bob is drowning Ponyboy. This is Johnny’s first ever crime, he does not have a record with the police and is usually very law abiding. Johnny also wants to turn himself in, as he feels guilty. Dally on the other hand, loves to break the rules. He is always getting into some sort of trouble and does not care when he does. “‘Dallas has a record with the fuzz a mile long”’(95). Ponyboy, Johnny and Dally are in the hospital because of the fire in the church. Ponyboy is talking to a guy about the heroic event, and Ponyboy tells him how they are greasers and punks. He tells him about how Dally was in a gang in New York and is always in and out of jail. Dally and Johnny have complete opposite personalities, yet a very close friendship.
Johnny hates fighting most of them all. He will always do the right thing never getting into fights except for when he was jumped. Johnny said to Dally and Pony that fighting is “‘Useless... fighting's no good....”’(148). Johnny was disappointed in them for fighting the soc’s he disagrees with all fighting. Unlike Johnny, Dally loves to fight.Dally is a tough greaser who does not waste anytime creating a problem if he has the opportunity. Dally is always looking to start a problem with the police and other people. The matter of facts, even his friends try their hardest to stay on his friendly side. Ponyboy says of Dallas, “One time, in a dime store, a guy told him to move over at the candy counter. Dally had turned around and belted him so hard it knocked a tooth loose. A complete stranger, too” (24). Dally has a bad temper, and he is not afraid to fight with anyone. Most of the time he will find ways to break laws randomly. Looking up to what I have stated you can tell they are two completely different people at
In S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders, there are two rival gangs. One group, the Socials, reap the benefits of wealthy living and a good reputation. The other bunch, the Greasers, are looked down upon as bad, unruly, and unlawful. Even though the Greasers and Socials live on opposite sides of town, they have a variety of likenesses and differences.
Dally Winston and Johnny Cade have a similarity of having abusive parents. For example, Dally’s parents do not pay attention to him at all. Dally is talking to Johnny about his father; “‘Shoot my old man don’t give a hang
Whenever Johnny gets abused, bullied by his parents, he would run off from home and find somewhere quiet to stay alone and rest, he prefers to take all the harm by himself, endure all injuries his parents have brought him, and never speak a word about it. "I had seen Johnny take a whipping with a two-by-four from his old man and never let out a whimper." (43) Whenever Dally get abused, or when someone offended him, he would just run off and have a fight with someone else in the neighborhoods, or he would rob something get the cops coming. " He went hunting some action--- booze or dames or a fight." "Mr. Curly Shepard spotted Dallas slashing their tires" (37) They also react differently in a fight.
And for the same reason.” In that scene, Ponyboy realizes that Johnny was an essential part of the gang and that the gang would just be ruined without Johnny. Johnny was like the glue of the gang, and if he’s gone, the gang would probably split and no one in the gang would be protected, making it a free-for-all, and a advantage for the Socs. Later on in the book, when Dally and Ponyboy visit Johnny after the rumble, Johnny dies. Dally shows his feelings by saying, ““Damnit, Johnny…” he begged, slamming one fist against the wall, hammering it to make it obey his will.
Johnny is the only thing Dally really loves. When Johnny dies, Dally loses it because Johnny is like Dally’s Achilles heel. Dally pleads to Johnny: “Oh, damnit, Johnny, don’t die, please don’t die…(149). Dally came to his breaking point when Johnny died. Johnny was the glue that held the gang together. Ponyboy says: “He was the gang’s pet, everyone”s kid brother”(12). Johnny does not like to fight, but he admires the way Dally does not let his living conditions get in the way of anything. Dally and Johnny look out for each other and care about each other due to their
He worries that him and pony will get sent to the electric chair, he worries that the socs will seek revenge on the greasers for killing bob. He didn't want pony to get mixed up in all of this and he feels bad about putting him through it. After dally comes to check on the boys at the church he takes them to get some food because they had looked like they lost 30lbs in just 5 days. After shoveling all that food up johnny talks to dally and pony about turning himself in. dally doesn't agree with the decision. He just doesn't want kind old johnny to become as rough as dally is by going to jail. Johnnys most worried about what could happen at trial. Pony says “you'll be fine just tell them it was self defence”. But no matter what anyone says he's still worried for his
If Johnny ever came to a situation where he could do something illegal, he will most likely chose not to do whatever that may be. Dally on the other hand, will take any chance he can get to do something that involves breaking the rules.
