Similarities Between The Truman Show And Animal Farm

The books Anthem by Ayn Rand and Animal Farm by George Orwell are both written about dystopias, or the most imperfect and dismal society. Both authors write about humans –or animals- failing to create a utopia or perfect society. Though both authors use different points of view, language style, and voice the same theme is expressed: a perfect society where everyone is equal cannot exist.

     A utopia is a seemingly perfect world, with happiness, honesty, equality, and peace. Although in the novel, 1984, by George Orwell, and the film The Truman Show, directed by Peter Wier, the readers and viewers are presented with a negative utopian society. A negative utopian society is a perfect world that somewhere has gone wrong. The controllers in the novel and film succeeded in achieving complete control and power, which was their attempt to make the ideal society. Each controller has a different threat, in 1984 it is association while in the film, The Truman Show, it is separation from the outside world.

Utopia is said to be a place where a good society is created, where one can live a good life and where power is not abused. But throughout George Orwell’s Animal Farm, the reader learns that a utopian society is in fact impossible. The reader learns this when Old Major tells of a dream he has where everything is perfect and no humans are involved, however when the revolution occurs and the humans are chased off the farm, the pigs become in charge and start to manipulate their power and the other animals, proving that no matter how hard the animals try, they will never have the good life that they want. Furthermore, in Peter Weir’s the Truman Show, we see that your own utopia can not be shaped by another being, because although being in power, Christof makes everything as perfect as he can for Truman, Christof can never give Truman the good life he actually wants which then leaves Truman finding his life unsatisfactory. The good life is determined by freedom and to be able to go where you want and do what you want to do, thus proving that a utopian society can not actually be made because if everyone could do what they want, there’s no guarantee that people would do the right thing which is why we have people in power.

He holds the power of what the traffic would be like, how Truman’s boss would treat him, how many birthday presents he gets, how his wife treats him, things like that. Similarly ‘Animal Farm’, Orwell suggest that power and control must be in the animal 's own hands. But some of the animals want all the power and all the control for themselves. For example Napoleon the pig wants all the control and power over the farm. He even kills and tricks to get there. Before he had all the power and control, all the pigs were in charge. What makes a good life for individuals and what constitutes the perfect utopian society? These are important questions for all humans living in the modern world and the answers to these questions radically affect the way that we view how power should be used. In George Orwell’s novel Animal Farm, we see that once the animals gain power over the farm they have the good life and live in a perfect society. In the Truman Show, directed by Peter Weir, we see that Truman doesn’t know that Christof is controlling his life and he is always working towards living what he thinks is the good life. The good life is determined by having everything perfect. This then affects what the perfect society would look like because if everyone didn’t have very much and wasn't treated equally the world would be a horrible place. People in power try to create perfect societies so people can live the good life.
