A hero is described as somebody who demonstrates bravery, sacrificial love, and does not take the easy way out. Tony and Mickie West have shown the community of Brandon what a true hero looks like. They left everything they had and moved to Haiti to minister to the Haitian people in need during the sixth century, an Anglo-Saxon poet wrote Beowulf. Beowulf is considered a hero in eyes of many. Even though Beowulf and the Wests are strikingly different, they all encompass similar qualities. Demonstrating bravery is easier said than done. Bravery is a characteristic that many people desire, and a distinguishing trait that separate heroes from the rest of society. For example, they both show bravery by risking their life for their cause. Even though they are risking their lives’ for different reasons, they both put their lives on the line to help others. In lines 672-673, of Beowulf, it states, “He took off the helmet and handed his attendant the patterned sword/he was ready.” Beowulf is ready to face whatever comes his way. He goes on the front line of the battle to fight, even when it was not required. Similarly, the Wests are on the front lines of “battle” every day ministering to those with great needs and hurting in Haiti. Additionally, going into another country to live displays bravery. The Wests moved to Haiti to be able to minister to the people. Haiti is a country with extreme poverty and high crime rate. Beowulf also travels to other countries away from his hometown to fight the enemy. He even goes underwater to fight Grendel’s mom! Though the West and Beowulf share many characteristics, the ethnic reasons for fighting battles and their jobs are contradictory. The storyline of Beowulf illustrates the epic battle between good and evil, and demonstrates to the readers that external war is not the only conflict hero’s face. Beowulf struggles a lot with his pride. Beowulf’s biggest internal battle was experienced when he was preparing to fight the dragon. He decided to go into battle, ignoring the fact that he had aged, but his pride, and warrior code wouldn’t let him run. What makes matters worse, he decided to go into the battle alone. His hero pride overcame the actions a normal king would’ve taken. The hero ideology at the time was strictly against a warrior running from a battle, and if Beowulf had done so, he would’ve been persecuted by society, as well as his own conscience.

Many people look up to Beowulf because of how passionate he was towards killing the monsters who attacked Heorot. Shania Shaffer is my hero because she protects this country from the “monsters” who try to harm our country and take over. Beowulf shows great bravery when he tells the men of Geat he wants to fight with only his men, only knowing that Grendel has killed many men before him with great ease, showing he has the bravery of a true Aglo-Saxon hero. Also, bravery can be seen Beowulf fights in a setting unfamiliar to him when he fights Grendel’s mother under the water in her lair. When the author describes Grendel’s mother and her lair he says, “and a bewildering horde/ came at him from the depths, droves of sea-beasts” (1509-1510). Although the setting of the story appears to be a disadvantage to our hero, he still shows a high level of bravery by plunging into the water without hesitation. In the end, Beowulf dies to the third and final monster yet his death is not a sad one, but one of great honor because of the bravery he showed throughout his battles. For example, the people of Geat honor he when the author states, “The the Geat people began to construct/ a mound on a headland, high and imposing,/ a marker that sailors could see from far away/ and in ten days they had done the work/ It was a hero’s memorial”(3156-3160). Beowulf’s bravery is respected and honored by the people of Geat and this is shown through the memorial they created for him. In the end, Beowulf’s heroic bravery was acknowledged in many aspects of the poem and allows the reader to have a better connection with the character of Beowulf
