Oscar Wilde was quoted as saying, “A cigarette is the perfect type of a perfect pleasure. It is exquisite, and it leaves one unsatisfied. What more can one want?” Unfortunately, Oscar Wilde had no idea that smoking caused lung cancer. Lung cancer is one of the most preventable diseases that exist, yet people continue to voluntarily put themselves at risk, and it still has tragic effects on the person and their family even though there are ways to treat it. The disease itself is categorized into two types, but both are eventually fatal. The cancer has several causes, but is mainly due to smoking. It has many numerous effects, both physical and emotional. However, there are still treatments and options that can prolong a cancer …show more content…
Aside from the obvious cause of lung cancer, which is smoking, there are several others. However, almost all of these can be avoided. Preventable risk factors include smoking marijuana, inhaling certain chemicals like gasoline fuel or diesel exhaust, undergoing radiation therapy, and having a poor diet. But, the American Cancer Society affirms that about 87% of lung cancer cases are a result of smoking tobacco, and that some of the other 13% are caused by secondhand smoke (11). Out of all the risk factors for lung cancer, smoking has the biggest impact. This is also ironic, as smoking is the easiest factor to avoid. Theoretically this should be the least prominent factor, as it is a voluntary decision to start smoking and is easier to avoid than any of the other factors. Yet, about 47.1 million people in the United States smoke (American Heart Association), and willingly put themselves at risk for lung cancer. At the same time though, people do not start smoking just because they want to develop lung cancer later in life; there are numerous factors that play into their decision. For example, people are influenced to smoke for reasons such as peer pressure, a way to deal with stress, and people they look up to that smoke (Bonas). They think it will help them relieve stress, or fit in, and they do not think about the consequences that come with their newfound hobby. Eventually smokers find that they cannot quit, for both physical and psychological
Lung cancer is the most common cancer-related cause of death among men and women. Lung cancer can be undetected for many years causing it to become more dangerous and possibly fatal. There is not cure for lung cancer or any cancer, but if detected in an early stage the lung cancer can be detected, treated, and hopefully terminated. There are many new and developing treatments being tested now that may save lives in the future. Through understanding what the lung cancer is, doctors can easily diagnose and assess cancer patients.

Recent studies show “that in 1982, approximately 1.2 million adults got lung cancer or died” according to Arden Pope III. The reason these people got sick and/or died is because of air pollution. People that smoke cigarettes are more likely to get lung cancer, than people who don’t smoke and the smokers are causing pollution also. Their not only affecting themselves with pollution, but their affecting other people's lives with the smoke that their releasing into the surface. For example myself. I have asthma and when people smoke near me I start to cough, get headaches, and the worst thing is when

Further, more than 16 million Americans suffer from at least one disease caused by smoking. (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2012). The effect of cigarette smoking is alarming. Lung cancer is a very common to be diagnosed with and harmful to anyone who is exposed to many resources around the world: smoking (first hand and second hand) and pollution. Any resource that is made up of chemicals that are exposed into the air that people breathe, give the risk of affecting others with lung cancer. However, since smoking is the most popular way to cause lung cancer, many people are exposed to it from either firsthand or second hand. First hand smoking is when the person being affected is indirect contact with the source that is giving off the toxins, while secondhand is when the one being affected is not directly connected to the main source. Either way the chemicals and toxins that come from harmful resources soon will build up and affect one’s normal body
In 2015, 221,000 new cases of lung cancer will be diagnosed out of these cases. An estimated (86,380 in men and 71,660 women) will not survive this disease. Lung cancer is the leading cause of death out of all cancerous circumstances far exceeding that of the colon, breast, and prostate combined. Cancer, well cancer happens when too many cells have uncontrolled division of cells happen in one part of the body. The cells have lost the ability to grow like normal cells do. A Lot of cells together would be called a tumour. I can spread to other tissues and that can be life threatening. I gets threatening when the cancerous cells go into the blood vessels and then they can go into the other organs and that’s when it gets dangerous. Some ways you get this cancer is exposure to some viruses, exposure to toxic things, chemical products, radiation, sun, drinking alcohol, smoking tobacco, and eating junk food and not enough vegetables. The most common cancers are lung, breast, colorectal, stomach, and prostate cancer. Over 25 million people in the world live with cancer. 7 million people die from cancer each year.
Lung cancer is the leading cancer killer of men and women in the U.S. The main cause of lung cancer is smoking. (Health Risks, n.d.) Smoking weakens our body’s immune system due to the chemicals (carcinogens) that are found in cigarettes. People don’t realize how damaging these chemicals are in their bodies or maybe they do and just don’t think it will happen to them. Smoking not only causes cancer it, also causes other health issues such as heart disease, COPD, obesity and many others. The sad thing is cigarette companies know they are slowly killing people, yet they continue to advertise and sell their products. Although, this isn’t very hard for them to do with all the help they get from actors and actresses making films with them smoking. This is why kids start smoking at such a young age, because they see actors/actresses they idol doing it.

For a country in our financial position the general health of Scotland is very poor. In some areas the average life expectancy is as low as 54 years old for men. A major cause of this is smoking. With the young in particular smoking is much more popular than it used to be. In October 2008, it was estimated that one third of 16-24 year olds smoke. This figure is at a 10 year high. In between the ages of 16-19 it is found that girls are more likely to smoke than boys.
