Though different places of the world may call it differently, all can agree on the fact that soccer truly is the Beautiful Game. No other game has such an international popularity and prominence, with an unmatched ability to unite fans and players over a great passion. Unfortunately, the game’s overarching organization is stained by unwanted headlines of corruption and fraud that has forced experts to question why they have such a consistent history of misconduct. Specifically, looking at FIFA’s decision to award Qatar with the 2022 World Cup can provide insight into the corruption and dishonesty of their operations. What is FIFA? The acronym “FIFA” stands for “Fédération Internationale de Football Association” and it is the governing body for professional soccer around the world. The organization is headquartered in Zurich, Switzerland yet it oversees soccer, futsal and beach soccer in every corner of the globe. Founded in the year 1904, FIFA contains 209 national associations and is responsible for organizing the FIFA World Cup, the most watched sporting event in the world (Business Insider). The World Cup allows the organization to generate millions of dollars in revenue via selling their broadcasting, television and marketing rights to large companies all over the world. In 2014 alone, the World Cup in Brazil saw over $4 billion raised through the month-long event. Yet, FIFA is technically a non for-profit group despite the massive sums of money they are able to collect. For a price tag of $425 million, FOX bought the rights to the 2018 and 2022 World Cup and recently, they had their license extended until 2026 despite FIFA not allowing other company’s to bid (Business Insider).
Who is in charge of FIFA? Today, they are in the middle of restructuring their executive leadership and they have been in this phase ever since 2015. Sepp Blatter was re-elected as President of FIFA on May 30, 2015 was after his previous term from the late 1980’s.
