During this period, there was a widespread of social activism and political reform throughout the United States, that lasted from the 1890s to the 1920s. During that time, Theodore Roosevelt served his term as president. The Era was dominated by social reform issues relating to working conditions, woman, cities, and the government. The progressive moment started because the progressives believed the government should be more involved in restoring the problems in society. They believed it was important to protect the welfare of Americans by environmental reforms. It became the first state to offer compensation. It allowed payments for workers or their families that suffered during tough times on the the jobs. The National Child Labor Committee started a movement that exploited children and the terrible working conditions. Many people took photographs of how dangerous the young boys and girls were working. It showed dangerous conditions of boys as young as eight working in coal mines and factories. Lewis Hine was a photographer who took many photos of children and woman in the factories. In 1910, there were many states that established the minimum legal age when children were able to work. It was between 12 and 16. Opportunities were increasing for woman in the cities. Almost one out of five women were working in the workforce, Also, progressive’s wanted to limit how long woman were working in the factories. In the Muller vs. Oregon, a law stated that only limited woman laundry workers could work no more than ten hours for a day.
