“Unequal treatment of minorities characterizes every stage of the process. Black and Hispanic Americans, and other minority groups as well, are victimized by disproportionate targeting and unfair treatment by police and other frontline law enforcement officials; by racially skewed charging and plea bargaining decisions of prosecutors; by discriminatory sentencing practices; and by failure of judges, elected officials and other criminal justice policy makers to redress the inequities that become more glaring every day (Henderson 2000: p. 2). Current crime statistics data showing percentages of imprisoned minorities is an example of the inequalities that are occurring in our justice system with African Americans make up 58% of the prison population. There is a generational existence of bias in the justice system and many social institutions due to inequality created by avoiding or ignoring the problem. The responsibility cannot solely be placed on the judicial systems only; attitudes, ignorance and general societal acceptance of social policies have tolerated unequal treatment towards specific classes in society.
