The Civil War had a huge impact on our nation. Throughout the Civil War women and Negroes were fighting for their rights of equality and freedom. People were fighting and losing faith within the nation. The Civil War impacted this by changing the definition of freedom, having dedication towards our nation, and changing the way everybody thought. The Civil War helped find the true definition of freedom. One person that helped redefine the word freedom was Sojourner Truth when she made her speech about women and negro rights, one thing she says in her speech is, “That man over there says that women need to be helped into carriages, and lifted over ditches, and to have the best place everywhere. And ain't I a woman?”(Ain’t I A Woman-2). When she says this she tries to show that just because she is African American she should have the same rights as other women. She tells that her freedom should be them same as others because she is a woman too. Another thing she say is that women should have the same rights as men. She says this in her speech when she says, “Then that little man in black there, he says women can't have as much rights as men, 'cause Christ wasn't a woman!”(Ain’t I A Woman-4). In other words she is saying that without a woman being there Christ wouldn’t have even been more, so women should have the same rights as men. What she says helps redefine freedom by showing that all women should have the same rights as men. In result because of people like Sojourner Truth, rights for women and negroes became reality for their equality.In addition, the Civil War helped our nation realize the devotion needed to keep the nation alive. Something in the Gettysburg address is that we should have more devotion towards our nation. One thing that helped people change the way thought was Sojourner Truth in her speech Ain’t I A Woman when she says the words, “And ain't I a woman?”( Ain’t I a Woman-2) These words reached many people to help change them. There way of thought changed helping so that everyone can have equal rights. Then there was Abraham Lincoln in the Gettysburg Address when he said, “But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate -- we cannot consecrate -- we cannot hallow -- this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract.”( Gettysburg Address- 3) He tells the people that must push forward and not give up on the task at hand.
