The Civil War had a huge impact on our nation. Throughout the Civil War women and Negroes were fighting for their rights of equality and freedom. People were fighting and losing faith within the nation. The Civil War impacted this by changing the definition of freedom, having dedication towards our nation, and changing the way everybody thought. The Civil War helped find the true definition of freedom. One person that helped redefine the word freedom was Sojourner Truth when she made her speech about women and negro rights, one thing she says in her speech is, “That man over there says that women need to be helped into carriages, and lifted over ditches, and to have the best place everywhere. Nobody ever helps me into carriages, or over …show more content…
And ain't I a woman?”(Ain’t I A Woman-2). When she says this she tries to show that just because she is African American she should have the same rights as other women. She tells that her freedom should be them same as others because she is a woman too. Another thing she say is that women should have the same rights as men. She says this in her speech when she says, “Then that little man in black there, he says women can't have as much rights as men, 'cause Christ wasn't a woman!”(Ain’t I A Woman-4). In other words she is saying that without a woman being there Christ wouldn’t have even been more, so women should have the same rights as men. What she says helps redefine freedom by showing that all women should have the same rights as men. In result because of people like Sojourner Truth, rights for women and negroes became reality for their equality. In addition, the Civil War helped our nation realize the devotion needed to keep the nation alive. Something in the Gettysburg address is that we should have more devotion towards our nation. (Gettysburg Address-4) Abraham Lincoln talks that we shouldn’t dedicate ourselves to the soldiers who have fallen, we should have the same …show more content…
One thing that helped people change the way thought was Sojourner Truth in her speech Ain’t I A Woman when she says the words, “And ain't I a woman?”( Ain’t I a Woman-2) These words reached many people to help change them. There way of thought changed helping so that everyone can have equal rights. Then there was Abraham Lincoln in the Gettysburg Address when he said, “But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate -- we cannot consecrate -- we cannot hallow -- this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract.”( Gettysburg Address- 3) He tells the people that must push forward and not give up on the task at hand. This changes the attitude of the people encouraging them to keep going. Furthermore, with the words of many, the way we thought was changed to what we know today as
The civil war was a war that redefined america and redefined freedom. The results of the war is what changed what being an american means.many passages from this period explored the meaning of freedom such as The Gettysburg address (Abraham Lincoln) and The narrative of Fredrick douglass. Both pieces discuss american views on freedom before and during the civil war.
The Civil War ended slavery and helped the nation settle its disputes between the Union and Confederacy, which kept the nation together. Without the war occurring, slavery could have been legal for longer or even still legal today. Another possibility is that the nation would be divided by the north and south halves. This is why I believe that the Civil War was necessary.
The Civil War, occurring between the years 1861 and 1865, was a devastating effect of sectionalism caused by the division of the country on the topic of slavery. Slavery impacted every aspect of the country, whether in the North or the South, though primarily in the South; major impacts were in the politics and economy of the early country ways which inevitably caused the Civil War.
The Civil War was a turning point in both American and World history. Many believed that America could not support democracy but this war showed that with resilience and perseverance one can achieve anything. The Civil War took over 1 million lives, destroying cities and farmland throughout the war. This was the deadliest and most destructive war in American history because all of the battle were fought amongst Americans on American soil. At the end of the Civil War, slaves were free but they were not given equal rights. With the end of the Civil War, many significant changes occurred. Some of these changes include Black Codes, discrimination, and peace between the North and the South.
The Civil War and the period of Reconstruction brought great social, political, and economic changes to American society. These changes affected the way everyone in the nation was used to living. Slavery was a huge thing that led the economy for the south, providing a free source of labor, which would soon lead to a lot of change in the southern economy when emancipated. Slavery also did not allow the African Americans to have any rights or participate in any political things. White people dominated the nation and restricted all that the African Americans were allowed to do. The emancipation of slavery led to changes in economics, politics, and brought many social changes. These changes ultimately had positive effects on the world, and these changes are still seen today as they continued into the 20th century.
According to Sojourner Truth, women are just as equal to men and they should have just as many rights and privileges as any man. She draws a picture of her equality to men by professing her strength and hard-working efforts. Right away, Truth’s first goal is to establish a sense of identity and relationship with her audience. She describes events where she has faced discrimination as a black woman to trigger an emotional response. Truth juxtaposes the ideal way man says women should be treated with her own personal reality saying, “Nobody ever helps me into carriages, or over mud puddles, or gives me the best place!” By pointing out the existence of hypocrisy, Truth invites the audience to realize possible injustices in their own lives, which should encourage them to want change and seek to take action against discriminators. Sojourner plays on the emotions of her audience to their attention and their willingness for change by shedding light on her own vulnerable experiences to which they can relate. With the successful use of rhetorical devices, persuasive techniques and Biblical allusions, Truth effectively persuades the audience that there is a difference in the treatment of women, especially in comparison to women of color.
The Civil War united the nation and expanded America mainly through slavery. Since slavery was a very partisan issue between the North and the South, ending the issue through the Civil War made the United States more of a united whole. During the Civil War, there was a call for many war materials. This led to a rise of factories and large companies to meet this demand, and after the war, these companies turned the munition into civilian business, allowing for economic growth in the United States. Also, there were lots of changes to the United States. The rise of large industrial corporations made lots of consumer goods, and railroads became huge with companies created for the sole purpose of building railroads. New legislation occurred as well, such as the Homestead Act of 1862. Signed into law by Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War, this act would eventually result in the transfer of 270 million acres of public lands to private individuals. The Civil War gave rise to not only contributed to our fundamental goal of Manifest Destiny, but to the rise of Westward Expansion.
There are several ways the Civil War affected the United States. One way is that it created tensions between the North and the South. Slavery was effectively ended, while slavery was not officially outlawed until the passage of the 13th amendment, the slaves were set free upon the end of the war. Next reconstruction, the plan to be re-build America after the war, began. Many people would say that Reconstruction was a success because of the ways it gave more rights to blacks.
The Civil War still has major impacts on America today. For example, an immediate response to the war was the ending of slavery and the beginning of equality in education, jobs, and many other aspects of life. On the negative side, some traces of racism still exist today. Black people are still reminded of their ancestors and their past of slavery before the war and segregation after the war.

Sojourner Truth's second contention utilizes the advance of rationale to persuade men regarding the advantages that will take after women's legal right. At the point when the woman get their full force of citizenship, they will act naturally adequate. Truth discusses the women's effectiveness. As the women must request that men modify the present social structure, if they accomplish this modification they will no more ask men for help since they will have the assets to work out issues all alone. Sojourner Truth guarantees, “When we get our rights, we shall not have to come to you for money, for then we shall have enough money of our own,” and consoles the men that women will keep on functioning as they have done, not getting to be careless,
How did the Civil War redefined what it’s meant to be an American? The Civil War changed slavery, America made civil rights, and changed American lives for the better. It changed the way we lived and how we treated on another. Not all changed right there and then, Lincoln struggle for every american to change their minds and their lives to make this huge difference in are nation. The Civil War redefined what it meant to be an American because the war stopped slavery and the way we thought about it.
The American Civil War was a time wrought with peril. Families were split along party lines and took up arms against one another to fight for what they believed was right. Yet there was one group of people who had more to gain than any other present in the war, and that was the African American slave. This war was one of the biggest turning points in the morality of America all because of what happened to the slave in this war. They enlisted in the army, fought bravely, and after long last, gained their freedom.
Women and men are two corresponding genders. In the speech Ain’t I A Woman, Sojourner Truth said, “ I have ploughed and planted, and gathered into barns, and no man could head me, “ (Gage) Truth is explaining that she has travailed in her work, and no man can do it better than she can. Truth is expressing that she is strong and just as capable of doing the rigorous tasks just as a man could. Truth also mentioned, that “... if a woman have a pint, and a man a quart—why can't she have her little pint full? You need not be afraid to give us our rights for fear we will take too much—for we can't take more than our pint'll hold,” (Robinson).
The Civil War was a very critical event in American History. It started by many disagreements between the North and the South. For blacks as for other Americans, the Civil War was a strong voice preaching the needs for devotion and allegiance to form a justified nation. After the war ended there were many results that would forever linger throughout America and the world.
