Spanish American War (1898)

The Spanish-American War was known as the beginning process to the United States establishing itself as a world super power. This would be the beginning to becoming a strong and powerful Empire. This process to building a powerful Empire is something that America has built up for hundreds of years.

Spanish American War: It was a war that happened in 1898 between Spain and the United States.

In response to the economic and political threat Spain was to the US, the US went to war with American business interests. The Spanish military were very defeated by the Cubans and was not able to handle another opponent. Upon seeing this the US attacked Spain for several reasons. Many factors occurred in order to lead to the War with Spain. A huge reason why the US fought Spain was because it feared the economic damage it would have to the government.

The Spanish-American war was fueled by many things, including the main idea of expanding the “manifest destiny” ideology. This war differed from the civil war because it was not for freedom or rights; it was the impact yellow journalism made on U.S citizens. Hearst and Pulitzer from New York slandered the news of the guerilla warfare happening in Cuba. They distorted the news in their newspapers; and this worked because at the time newspapers were the prime source of communication. As soon as the citizens began tuning in on the newspapers, citizens felt involved in the aid of the Cubans. They wanted to stop them from being suppressed by the Spanish. The Spanish-American war took place in 1898, from April 25 to August 12. The conflict lasted four months and it was between Spain and the United States, it was mainly provoked by Spain’s colonization and brutality in Cuba. The war was supported by many Americans, and expansionist which supported the thought of freeing the oppressed which was exactly what Spain was doing to the Cuban people. At the end of the war, America proclaimed victory and emerged as a newly and acknowledged world power who would do whatever it takes to fight and destroy oppression.

Although there are many reasons why the Spanish-American war took place, the most important was Spain's resentment of Cuba's desire to also become an independent nation. Since Cuba was one of Spain's last territories, they were unwilling to allow independence. As a result, conflict between the two parties erupted. Since Cuba was smaller and less equipped to fight than Spain, their economy took a tumble. Due to the fact that the United States had a great deal of money invested in Cuba's sugar resources, many Americans felt the need to wage war. The war initially began in 1895 with the rebellion of Cubans under Spanish control. Accordingly, Spain sent forces to dispel this rebellion, but in vain. Early in the year of 1898, the ship USS Maine was sent to Cuba, and sunk on February 15 of that same year. About a week prior to the USS Maine’s sinking, a letter, written by Enrique Dupuy de Lôme, and famously called the De Lôme Letter2, was released by U.S. newspapers. The letter slandered U.S. President William McKinley, the incumbent at the time, as well as his methods of dealing with both foreign and domestic affairs. Indeed, many, including McKinley, saw this letter as a large sign of disrespect, especially when coming from the Spanish ambassador to the United States. This, coupled with the sinking of the USS Maine, raised the concern of a possible war with Spain. The Spanish-American war was a conflict between America and Spain in 1898 mainly due to the intervention of the US in the ongoing Cuban War of Independence. The public opinion of America was created from reports of Spanish Atrocities in Cuba. United States tariffs had put restrictions on sugar imports to America and severely hurt the economy of Cuba that was dependent on the producing and selling sugar. The main issue was that Cuban independence, the ten-week war was fought in the case of both Caribbean and Pacific.

There were many causes for the Spanish American War. The first long term cause was the Wilson Gordon Tariff. This tariff ultimately decreased tariff rates for may Europeans nations excluding the commonwealth of Spain. This ultimately angered the Spanish and weakened international relationship between the United States and Spain. This tariff also instilled an anti-American feeling in Spain. This would lay down the groundwork for the next cause the “Delome Letter”

The United States went to war with Spain in 1898 for three different reasons: social, economic, and political. These causes were stimulated by commercialism and nationalism. Based on these interpretations it is clear that the desire to be a world wide power, and advance commerical interest were primary factors that led to the declaration of war on Spain.

The Spanish colonies of Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines, as well as the formerly independent nation of Hawaii, became American possessions.

However, in Spain there was a belief of the United States planning the explosion to began a war. With all of the tension between the two countries, about two months after the attack, there was an outbreak of warfare known as the Spanish-American War. The attack on the ship was in February of 1898 and the war began in April of the same year. It ended in August, 1898 when both countries signed the Treaty of Paris guaranteeing Cuban independence, and forcing Spain to sign Guam and Puerto Rico over to the United States.
