Rationale:
Of Mice and Men is a novel published in 1937 written by author John Steinbeck. It is a book I have studied in my English B Literature Lesson, with the chosen theme for this speech to be ‘Dream, Hopes and Plans’. In this speech, I would be playing the role George and the aim of this task is to persuade adolescents to have a dream in their life. George in this book is a very smart and physically strong person. He is also a very thoughtful and rational person as whatever he does has his own reasons and objectives. The speech is written in a formal tone and is targeted at the adolescents.
In the speech, I would be using George’s own personal experiences to be a guide for my target audiences to follow and to draw their attention based

A dream would give us a sense of direction. A dream would lighten up your future. Leo Tolstoy has once said, “Ideal is the beacon. Without ideal, there is no secure direction; without direction, there is no life.” A dream would motivate you to strive your best. My dream and objective were clear in my mind when I was working in the ranch. My dream was my guiding light that guided me through obstacles and brought me to success.
Why do we need a dream? A dream would make ourselves to become more independent. When we have a goal, we would not get influenced by the external environment. We would only work on tasks that would help us achieve our dreams. When I got married, I had different working experiences in various ranches. But no matter where I work, I have only thought of owning a farm. Therefore, I have been toiling away in the ranch and have finally earned the first barrels for opening a farm.
Why do we need a dream? A dream would provoke you with ambition. It would enlighten you to bring in more goals to enrich your life. A dream would motivate you to live in a better life. Thomas A Edison has once said, “We shall have no better conditions in the future if we are satisfied with all those which we have at present.” Dream is all about virtual precognition. With dreams, we would be able to shape our future. During the Great Depression, many people got unemployed. Therefore, I had the American Dream, a dream of owning a farm. In which now it has been attained, and my living standard was
Throughout this novella, Of Mice and Men, Steinbecks use of diction reveals the theme of loneliness can be painful and isolating. In this particular incident, Lennie gets in trouble because he doesn't know his own strength, therefore he accidentally kills the boss's wife while touching her soft hair. After this incident Lennie's friend George has no more patience left for all of Lennie's mistakes so he kills him. Slim knows that George had to kill Lennie and it wasn't manslaughter because one of the men who wanted revenge would have killed George anyway. Slim said, "You hadda, George. I swear you hadda" (Steinbeck 107). The diction of the author's word choice is very strong in this quote. Slim was understanding after George
There are numerous theories regarding the function of our dreams, they are mainly based on speculation more than research. This enchanted place of consciousness is what got me interested about dreams. Dreams are based on the individual in that we usually dream of ourselves. I feel that greater understanding of our dreams will have a major influence for individuals to understand themselves better.
What does it mean when you need to fulfill a dream? Every person may have a different view towards the answer to this question. Personally, I believe this means your strong impulse to follow and conquer what you feel most passionate about. In the novel, The House on Mango Street, by Sandra Cisneros ,the main character Esperanza shares her journey through life and her longing desire to leave the house she lives on Mango Street forever. Throughout the novel there are multiple themes that transpire during Esperanza's life. Although each theme shows relevance, I conclude the most compelling theme in the novel and the most apparent in today's society is the need to fulfill a dream.
Everyone has dreams, big and small. When one dreams, there is a scent of whimsical hope in the air mixed with the powerful drive for success to obtain their luminous goals. But, many times these luscious dreams end up in grief and pain instead of a promised joy due to the hurdles in life, such as the certain circumstances that society professes or the flaws in a person that restrains them from their aspirations. The writer, John Steinbeck, incorporates this ideology in his novella, Of Mice and Men by creating three pivotal characters. Lennie, Crooks, and George all have schemes that go wrong, and yet hope to illustrate their desires of fulfilling their American Dream and to be prosperous for their own independent purposes.
“I never dreamed about success, I worked for it.” Estee Lauder. This quote really sums up the reason we shouldn’t dream because dreams make us believe in things that won’t ever happen unless a person actually goes out tries to accomplish what they want to do in life. In addition sometimes when people try to accomplish their dreams it leads to terrible outcomes such as the Great Leap Forward, The 5 Year Plans, and the Holocaust as some examples. Also, it results in many people overestimate what they can do which leads to terrible outcomes. This all shows often when people try to dream it often leads to outcomes that very undesirable.
Halfway through Of Mice and Men, Steinbeck uses dialogue to indirectly demonstrate the theme of the sad nature of humans on the ranchers.
“Hopes and dreams help people survive, even if they can never become real.” This statement plays an enormous part in Of Mice And Men by John Steinbeck. An abundance of the characters in this book all have something they want to accomplish, even if what they want to reach isn’t necessarily the most practical thing under the circumstances. Each character in the book has obstacles to overcome, and in the end, we don’t really find out the denouement of most character, we only find out the true ending to two characters.
If someone doesn’t have this or can’t earn it, then there is low chance they will ever be able to experience the Dream. A basic need in this time is a medium of exchange since that is the way people can buy the objects they want in their dream. Also, once someone becomes part of poverty it is very difficult to leave poverty due to what the person has to do, the person would need collect even more money than what they started with. So if you can have an acceptable amount of savings and a stable amount of income then there is a greater chance for the
Dreams are a very important part of most peoples lives. For me, dreams provide a way to motivate myself to do well. They give me something to strive for, so if I’m struggling or lacking drive, I can think about my dream and it will keep me going. Having a dream is also important to me because your dreams, in my opinion, define the kind of person you are. Many times people’s dreams reflect what a person likes to do or what they want in life.
The idea of the American dream has a strange power to it. It seems to almost drive people insane with all of the ideas thrown into their brain: some not even achievable. There is no doubt it is always good to have a “dream” idea to give work an incentive. When we get caught up in work striving for the next thing, we can get caught up in the work and lose the initial dream.
A dream is a goal in life, not just dreams experienced during sleep. Most people use their dreams as a way of setting future goals for themselves. Dreams can help to assist people in getting further in life because it becomes a personal accomplishment. Langston Hughes's poem "Dream Deferred" is speaks about what happens to dreams when they are put on hold. The poem leaves it up to the reader to decide what dream is being questioned.
Why do we dream? I see dreaming as benefiting humans by helping our conscious and subconscious minds shake hands and come to an agreement, so to speak. Our brains operate on conscious, subconscious and unconscious levels, and I believe there is a strong link between our subconscious minds and our dreams. Perhaps the information we store in our subconscious minds during waking hours manifest into these hallucinatory pictures while we sleep. The part of our brain which operates on a conscious level is significantly diminished when we are asleep, which gives the subconscious part of our brain more energy to process what it’s learned or stored.
The book “Of Mice and Men“, written by American author John Steinbeck and published in 1937, revolves around two migrant workers named George and Lennie in the 1920s who have a very special relationship which includes a common dream of owning a farm. Dreams have been around since the beginning of time. There is often controversy over whether or not dreams are important or meaningless. Although many people believe that dreams are pointless and have no meanings to them, research and experimentation show that there can be many different interpretations of dreams.
