Often in their lives, individuals are plagued by unrealistic societal expectations that threaten individual’s personal moralities which lead them to act in certain ways that they would later regret. A person’s desire to be a part of a community, one in which they can feel accepted by social standards, is what can ultimately bring them to their morality’s demise. Despite having social expectations bring down one’s honour due to certain situations, it is important to remember that at times, it is not the outside world that inherently plagues individuals, rather, it can be the individuals themselves. Social expectations that seep into our own egos have the power to make one’s own expectations into something that can set individuals up for failure. However, as tragic as certain mistakes can be, it is important to remember that the recovery from one’s downfall is what matters the most. In order to effectively restore honour and certainty in oneself, one must learn to take a proactive approach to their adversities stemming from unrealistic social standards that brought them to their downfall. As human beings require feelings of accomplishment, honour, and certainty in order to most effectively function and achieve other feats in their lives, a proactive approach to the adversities that threaten their honour and certainty is vital. Recently, I have been dealing with my own struggles with restoring honour in my work and certainty in my capabilities. In grade 9 when I signed up to
Each action we take as humans determines our personal character and ethical theories guide us and teach us right from wrong (Mosser, 2013).
Where would you rather live, the United States or Qatar? Easy, United States, but what if you had the choice between the United States or Qatar, but if you chose Qatar you will be given five million dollars and you only had to be there for 3 weeks. Okay, most of you reasonable people would choose Qatar, and I would imagine most of you would do it for the money. FIFA or the International Federation of Associated Football (Soccer) was bribed into making that same decision over the 2022 World Cup (Berlin), which is without a doubt the most watched and visited sporting event in the world, and now it will be witness in one of the smallest and hottest countries in the world. Now this raises the question on how these very prominent issues such as corruption (Berlin), Doping (Drepper), Money Laundering (FBI 24 Years Bribery and Corruption), the Violations of Basic Human Rights
This story demonstrates that individuals are just barely in light of the fact that they fear discipline for shamefulness. Nobody is on account of equity is attractive in itself.
However, we find this commandment hard to obey because it goes against our fallen sense of justice. People hold competing motives, focus on competing virtue orientations, experience competing emotions, and find themselves in a variety of situations that make different (often competing) behaviors normative. Transformations of motivations and emotions can occur. Injustices, offenses, and transgressions stimulate a set of emotions, motivations, virtue orientation, and social norms that are skewed toward self-interest, self-protection, and
We have all experienced times when we have felt unappreciated or belittled by others, but very easily do we forget how uplifting or detrimental of an impact our words can have on their lives moving forward. In my Reflection #7, I provide my own analysis and interpretation of this subject based on the reading “Integrity and Disrespect: Principles of a Conception of Morality Based on the Theory of Recognition”, by Axel Honneth. In the reading, Honneth emphasizes how we should be weary of when we use disrespectful behavior towards others because this can do so much harm that we may be completely oblivious to. He argues that our well-being depends upon the approval of others when, he writes, “Subjects capable of language and action are constituted
The way an individual is perceived or labeled in the society has a big role in deciding his future. If one knows how to carry oneself in the public, the public would accept one and overlook one’s delinquencies. But this never means that others who are just not as good at hiding their delinquencies are worse. As in the Outsiders, Ponyboy and his mates were socially excluded just like the Roughnecks, yet they were kind enough to risk their own lives to save the life of others. They were considered bullies, however their concern and feelings for humanity is evident from their efforts to save human life. In the materialistic society in which we live, people exclude such individuals from the social circle, whose physical offences are easily noticeable. Thus, their chances of improvement are minimized and their future is usually dark as anticipated.
Throughout life, in any society we develop a sense to conform and adjust to our surroundings but why? Our values in our society determines our norms and why we do the things we do. I recently sought out to break these social conformities that violated the values, and norms we hold as a society. Every society is different and, in every society there are different and similar values, norms, sanctions folkways, and mores. Breaking them up and analyzing them we began to understand why these terms and values are so important to us.
A person can live a fulfilling life by not conforming to society’s standards and opinions. Society today has expected a certain level of conformity. People tend to worry what other people think and it prevents them from revealing their true inner feelings. In the movie “Dead Poet’s Society,” many of the boys didn’t
As we all have observed, throughout history each culture or society has unique norms that are acceptable to that group of people. Therefore, to establish and come to the acceptance of these basic norms, each society must develop its’ own strategies and techniques to encourage the fundamentals of behavior, which is clear in our modern society. Most do assume that everyone in a society will follow and respect such norms. However, some tend to deviate from the adequate norms and demonstrate deviant behavior. Nevertheless, we are inclined to ask ourselves, why do people decide to violate such important standards of living?
Within any culture lies an array of definitive demeanors and actions that are deemed socially adequate and inadequate. Depending on the distinguishing behavior of a given individual and the society that they live in, there are invisible “laws” that prevent people from acting a certain way. If the individual’s behavior is adverse to the superior, predominant norms of their society, the actions of that individual are considered to be deviant. Social deviance in shown in a variety of dissimilar faces: within physical appearance, actions done to oneself and others, and religious groups.
You may have heard me say, “It’s better to aim for the stars and miss, than to aim for a pile of crap and hit it.” The original saying is from Michelangelo. He said, “The greater danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we hit it.”
Man is a product of the culture in which he is born and brought up. For the same reason, no one can negate the influence of the society in forming one’s personality. I am well aware of the fact that my views, thoughts, and attitude have been shaped by the society I live in; hence, any attempt to sketch my personal experiences would be incomplete without referring to the part played by my surroundings. Throughout my life, I have paid utmost importance to initiating and maintaining interpersonal relationships with others. I had to face varied situations out there, both joyous and depressing. However, each instance was a great lesson for me to learn several things about my practical life – I wouldn’t be exaggerating when I say that I have learned more outside the four walls of my classroom than within them. My autobiography is closely associated with my social connections including my experiences with my family, educational institution, and the larger society I reside within.
(I have talked about early detection, but what if it is too late? What if you are already a victim?)
