I wrote my paper on sex and disability, primarily with spinal cord injury, also known as SCI. Each spinal cord injury is different and any damage to the spinal cord is a very complex injury and most devastating of all traumatic events. Damage to the spinal cord can occur from either a traumatic injury or from disease to the vertebral column. A person’s injury is described by its level and type, which may result in a loss of some or all of an individual’s sensation and movement. The higher the spinal cord injury is on the vertebral column, or the closer it is to the brain, thus the more affect it has on the body’s movement and what they can feel. More movement, feeling and voluntary control over the body’s system are present with a lower level of injury. People who become …show more content…
If they are single prior to the injury, there tends to be a fear about meeting potential partners. The reality is that there is no difference before and after injury. The most important thing is to become comfortable with their own bodies following the injury and their partners will need time to make some adjustments. Partners need to be more understanding, plus carry an open and honest communication, and work together to manage health issues if needed. Couples can talk about, explore and experiment with different ways to become romantic and intimate.
Sexuality and disability refers to the sexual behavior and practices of people with a disability (PWD). Physical disabilities such as a spinal cord injury may change the sexual functioning of a person. However, the disabled person may enjoy sex with the help of sex toys and physical aids (such as bed modifications), by finding suitable sex positions, or through the services provided by a qualified sex worker. However they should not allow the disability be an obstacle to not have healthy
Now that I have shared a brief overview of the spinal cord and some statistics about spinal cord injuries, we will look at the past research that has led to the treatments most commonly used today. In 1990, a steroid called dexamethasone was discovered in human trials to preserve some motor and sensory function if administered at high doses within 8 hours of injury. Surgery used to remove fluid, tissue, or bone fragments, or to stabilize fractured vertebrae by fusing bones or inserting hardware has also proven to be one of the most thorough measures to prevent further harm. I received both of these treatments after my accident, and they are the same that have been used for the past decade. Until recently, doctors had no way of limiting such disabilities, aside from stabilizing the cord to prevent added destruction, treating infections, and prescribing rehabilitative therapy to maximize any remaining capabilities.
King will be talking about how dangerous football is. There will be knee cartilagae tears. I will also be talking about spine injuries. The final thing is death. Thatnis all.
Rarely, do we find in society, the overlapping topic of sex and disability being discussed. In fact, it is hardly ever addressed because there is an underlying notion which seems to discourage such an open minded perspective from individuals. In fact, the topic of sexual intercourse itself is seemingly discouraged. However, why is that the case? Our society has been conformed to hold such restricted societal values; such that in a way, the desire for sex is shunned upon and confronted with negativity. There is also the implication of gender roles that ties into this subject. However, the subject becomes much more complex when the matter of disability ties in. Often times, those with disabilities are almost “hidden away” from topics such as
The body parts discussed in the article is acquired spinal cord injuries in children. This talks about how the children lives I changed since the accident. The main idea of this article is to compare activity performance and participation Meaning, how their lives have changed negatively in social participation, mental stability, and self-confidence. A lot of the cases they talk about how they miss out on the activities that were able to participate in because of the SCI. For example, many stated not going to friends houses because they can’t get to the home. Another student said the reason she does not attend sleepovers is because of bowel and bladder complications she suffered after the incident. Also
They are client- directed which means taking their direction from, and responding to the unique needs of the people they serve. In addition, they are culturally aware serving Alberta’s diverse population in all regions of the province. Leaders in spinal cord injury they are demonstrating excellence and impact by achieving positive outcomes for individuals and communities. They are also a dynamic organization integrating best practices in charitable and business governance models. They are also having a solid reputation among their organization with all staff and volunteers and good relationships with other community leaders and decision-makers.
Approximately 7,800 people suffer from a new spinal cord injury every year in the United States. Eighty-two percent of spinal cord injuries happen to males. The age group most at risk for spinal cord injury is 16-30 years old. Fifteen percent of spinal cord injuries are a result of violence, forty-eight percent result from motor vehicle accidents, and twenty-one percent result from falls. Suffering a spinal cord injury can result in a complete change in lifestyle. It can affect relationships, ability to work, and basic daily tasks such as bathing. My research question will address some of the ways a paraplegic has to adjust his daily routine, things they have to be aware of following a spinal cord injury, as well as focus on ways they can become
Spinal cord trauma affects a multitude of individuals globally. Many common spinal cord injuries occur frequently from motor vehicle accidents, athletics, falls, and disease and are not curable (Center NSCISC 2013). Depending on the area that is damaged, there are numerous consequences of spinal cord injuries that affect the body in different ways. As individuals age, their susceptibility to such injuries significantly increases and is frequently caused by falling. However, anyone is susceptible to spinal cord trauma. In the United States, 906 individuals per one million have some sort of spinal cord injury. The peak age of those affected is younger than thirty and the elderly. The most prevalent reason comes from automobile accidents and
This paper will speak of, women with spinal cord injury (SCI) and the changes in their sexual function in both physical and emotional. For women with spinal cord injury it is common to be unsure as to whether or not they can give or receive sexual pleasure. Many of these woman experience a loss of self-satisfaction, confidence and self-worth. As time passes, women who experience spinal cord injury begin to express great appreciation for sexuality. This paper will explain the opportunities for sexual exploration among disabled women were it can be very limited. I will cover its impact on self-esteem, which in turn affects sexuality by making the tendency of a woman with a disability of some kind feel unattractive, or even less worthy of sexual

Spinal cord injuries are traumatic to people and do not just affect their physical body, but their mind and spirit. Using stem cells to help improve some of the physical functioning that the human body has after the initial spinal cord injury will also help improve their mental and emotional wellbeing. The discipline of psychology will look at the mental progress that patients make when undergoing stem cell therapy. By improving the mental health of a person who has undergone a spinal cord injury it will also have a cascade of effects because a person’s mental health impacts many different things in their body. This will allow me to relate the topic back using other disciplines outside of psychology, but disciplines that psychology can affect.
The spinal cord has many nerve cells that are associated with the tissue and connects all parts of the body to the human brain. When the spinal cord is damaged, the human brain cannot recognize all the nerve cells that are trying to communicate with it. For Jerry’s case being in an accident and severely damaging the spinal cord can affect a lot of daily activities, especially his sex life. The spinal cord is involved in the ejaculation process. The spinal cord which allows semen to move in and out of the urethra is not able to happen because when the spinal cord is damaged or injured the travel of the communication from the brain to the spinal cord is impaired. Men who have a spinal cord injury can sometimes experience an anejaculation or a
The spinal cord is located inside the vertebral canal, and anatomically extends from the skull foramen magnum down to the caudal end of the vertebral column. It is composed of thirty one segments which are eight cervical, twelve thoracic, five lumbar, five sacral, and one coccygeal. The conus medullaris is located in the end of spinal cord. The pia mater is the innermost layer that line the vertebral and it attaches to the coccyx which has only one spinal segment. The cauda equina is the collection of lumbar and sacral spinal nerve roots. The cord ends at vertebral levels lumbar one and two. The spinal nerves consist of two roots. The sensory dorsal roots that exhibit a ganglion and it actually enters the spinal cord at each level. The
The first pt we observed was Brent Lawerance a 29 yr old male who suffered a C4-C5 incomplete spinal cord injury. The pt presented to the clinic with his mother and father who were supportive which is important to note about the pt’s family life. The pt became quadriplegic following a motocross accident in 2005. The accident left the pt paralyzed from C3 and below. He was referred to therapy 4 years following the accident. During the treatment session, Dr. Morgan first decided to work on locomotor training utilizing a harness to help with unloading the pt’s body weight while walking on the treadmill. According to a study done on mice, there is evidence of benefits of exercising paralyzed limbs after SCI1. The article stated you can increase
The second article I chose to summarize discusses the rehabilitation process on a rat with a spinal cord injury. The method they used to rehabilitate the rats spinal cord was by electrically stimulating neurons that would normally be stimulated if the rats spinal cord was not damaged. The whole purpose of the study was to find a way to help people who are experiencing spinal cord damage which can severely limit the way a person carries out day to day activities. The article states that before now other rehabilitation efforts helped some but not enough to allow the person experiencing the injury to recover. How the electrical stimulation works is, electrical excitation is given to the parts of the undamaged spinal cord of the rat, this then
As spinal injuries and conditions can cause overall weakness within the spine which leads to health issues of the entire body so the initial visit to the chiropractor is what determines that which method of treatment should be used and how many visits of the patients will be required for him to regain optimal health. A person should always remember that he has one body and he must do whatever is necessary to acquire and maintain an optimal
