The iconography or characteristics of a spy genre film are very unique compared to other films that are similar to its genre. First, the genre adds a mixture of science fiction to the film with advanced technology. Within every spy genre the protagonist is always given copious amounts of gadgets that can be either lethal or non-lethal to enemies. Some of the best gadgets seen within in the spy genre would be the ejecting chair, vehicle that can shoot, or even the simple everyday object that can be used as a tracking device.

Generally this catch phrase is memorable enough that the audience can identify the phrase with the film. The importance of the catch phrase is to make the film lasting in the minds of the audience even after they left the theatre. The last characteristic and possible the most important element of the spy genre, is that the genre keeps up with current events. Early spy movies have a plot that is centered on the Cold War, and Russian spies trying to take down Western ideology. As the decades evolve though the films stay current by changing the antagonist, making the modern day spy films evolve around terrorism and cyberspace. A great example of this comes from one of the latest installments of Bond films, Skyfall. As author James Smith writes, “Indeed, Skyfall’s grasp of this cultural and political moment was nowhere more apparent than in its choice of villain, Raoul Silva. In depicting this antagonist as a master computer hacker who steals MI6’s closest secrets and leaks them on the Internet…” (Smith). This film was in response to WikiLeaks and foreshadowed Edward Snowden revealing NSA secrets to the world.
