Generally this catch phrase is memorable enough that the audience can identify the phrase with the film. The importance of the catch phrase is to make the film lasting in the minds of the audience even after they left the theatre. The last characteristic and possible the most important element of the spy genre, is that the genre keeps up with current events. Early spy movies have a plot that is centered on the Cold War, and Russian spies trying to take down Western ideology. As the decades evolve though the films stay current by changing the antagonist, making the modern day spy films evolve around terrorism and cyberspace. A great example of this comes from one of the latest installments of Bond films, Skyfall. As author James Smith writes, “Indeed, Skyfall’s grasp of this cultural and political moment was nowhere more apparent than in its choice of villain, Raoul Silva. In depicting this antagonist as a master computer hacker who steals MI6’s closest secrets and leaks them on the Internet…” (Smith). This film was in response to WikiLeaks and foreshadowed Edward Snowden revealing NSA secrets to the world. Now having had the proper background information, one can now look into the comparison and contrasting characteristics of Austin Powers being a parody film of James

While films have at least one major genre, there are a number of films that are considered crossbreeds or hybrids with three or four coinciding genre or sub-genre types that they can be identified with them and most can be filed into categories that are easily recognizable to audiences (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 1998, p. 4.1). However, ever so seldom a film comes along that breaks free of its invisible bounds of genre and it leaves the audiences confused about the actual existence of genre. One such film is a film that most are familiar with Steven Spielberg’s classic Saving Private Ryan.

However, one thing that has stayed constant are the upcoming of film genre. One of the primary ways to identify and differentiate films are by their genres and styles. This lays out the foundation of the film using many factors like iconography, language, conflicts, lighting and story plot. One of the most iconic styles in the cinematic world would have to be the typical gangster films. Two of the most recognizable gangster films of their time were the Public Enemy (1931), along with the film Scarface (1983). Although these two films were shot in completely different eras of the U.S. we see both encounter the same stages in life despite the time change. This goes to show that these two films strongly symbolizes and demonstrates just what the gangster genre is all about in terms of social context, themes, conflict and iconography.
The characteristics of crime films are illegal activities, violence, and conflict or drama between two or more characters.
A spy must have keen observational skills when collecting information about his victim. When Rainsford first arrived to the general’s house on the island he finds out many things about him like, when he started hunting, his fathers influence on hunting, and what he hunts now…Humans. “Rainsford leaned across the table, absorbed in what his host was saying”(Connells). Spies have to have this skill to collect and remember this information when taking down their enemy. They have messy and imperfect relationships with those around them, specifically their families, and especially with their wives. They are stoic, and humorless, often more likely to make a dry or pessimistic comment rather than drop a witty one liner.
1984 a novel by George Orwell and the german play The Spy by Bertolt Brecht both portray how throughout history the terror of constantly being watched was very much alive, and caused paranoia in many families. According to Thomas Schatz, in most gangster films, the genre dictates that the gangster always gets killed or goes to jail. There is nothing different that will, or should happen, and Scarface closely follows Schatz’s model of Hollywood’s genres. Schatz’s model is concerned with the movie’s alignment with classical Hollywood setting and narrative.
