We all remember dressing up for Halloween night as children. Getting together with best friends and competing to see who has the best costume or can collect the most candy. For some, this was the best night of the year. Then there are the children who sit at home and go through the motions of what their parents do. These parents inevitably will carve a generic looking pumpkin and then sit down and hand out candy to kids the remainder of the night. The children that are staying at home with their parents are handing out candy to the kids who are living and enjoying their Halloween. As Mac Hammond in “Halloween” stresses, the children that are out having fun on Halloween are the true

Pat Conroy’s memoir, “The Water is Wide,” is about his life on Daufuskie Island, also known as Yamacraw Island in the book. Conroy spent a year teaching on the island in a little two room schoolhouse. The Yamacrawans were rural African-American people that by leaving on the island had basically no knowledge of anything beyond the island. Conroy tells of all the troubles he faced while teaching on the island and all the struggles he faced with outside forces. Conroy uses the setting, the title of his book, symbolism, and different themes to express what the year he spent teaching there was like.
Symbolism is a powerful tool used by people every day to force people to look past the obvious and find the deeper meaning. Symbolism is used by authors, musicians, priests, and many others. James Joyce, a well-known Irish author, uses symbolism repeatedly throughout his collection of short stories published in 1916. In these stories, titled Dubliners, Joyce uses symbolism not only to enhance the stories, but to also show the hidden, underlying message of each story without coming out and saying it directly. Joyce’s stories are centered on the problems of Dublin and through his use of symbolism Joyce is able to focus attention on what problem each story is addressing. James
There is a bible proverb that states, "In everything you do, put God first…" In laymen's term, is as we are on our journey of life, we should carry the message of God in all that we do. Devon Flute upholds his quote by finding courage and becoming the exemplar the Flute family needed.

There was no shame in his face. He ran like a rabbit.” These lines show Henry’s fearfulness by running from conflict when he was in battle with his regiment. What does color mean; is it merely light bouncing off objects, or does it hold some deeper purpose? Well, in ‘Red Badge of Courage’ it most certainly does, this book presents a variety of colors that possess more meaning than simply their namesake. A few colors that can claim this attribute include; blue, gray and red/crimson. Blue is a color that represents the sky and the sea. In “Red Badge of Courage” the color represents a few other things than the sky, it also represents the Union army.
In Stephan Crane's The Red Badge of Courage is a great example of realistic literature. Within the story we are introduced to a youth named Henry who loved the idea of being a hero in war, but didn't understand the severity of battle. The emotions he feels and what he sees and imagines is what makes it realistic. What happens in this novel is common as to what would happen to any youth that was ignorant about war. The Red Badge of Courage is considered realistic literature, because of the normal human emotions Henry feels before the fighting and before signing up to join.
How can a meager walk in the woods make for an engaging story? Well, in “The White Heron,” the author Sarah Orne Jewett, uses colors, metaphorical application of animals, and a theme questioning if humans can coexist with nature to bring us closer to our main character and her internal dilemma throughout the story.
Some people may think that status or wealth, automatically means that they are exempt from the bad things in life such as illness or deadly diseases. A group of wealthy people think that they can escape death by locking themselves away from the world, but they will discover they are mistaken. In the story “The Red Masque” by Edgar Allan Poe a terrible contagion is spreading across the world. Price Prospero a wealthy lord, invites one thousand guests to lock themselves in his castellated abbeys to escape the Red Death. The Prince orders the gates be welded shut allowing no entrance or exit, thus not allowing the red death to come in and infect him or his guests.
Irish independence has been fought for a long time ever since the British occupied Ireland in 1172. The King of England invaded and controlled Ireland. The invasion led to religious and territorial conflicts. There was an effort to create a church comparable to the Church of England in the 1500s. Catholics who live in Ireland were against the idea and a conflict for independence has emerged (Arena & Arrigo, 2004). The suppression of Irish nationalism by the British in the 20th century led to the creation of martyrs for the cause led by the Irish Republican Army (Combs, 2011).
I used a canvas to draw my work inspired by Incarnation. To begin with, the black on the sides and the bottom symbolizes that people who do not go through the narrow path, with go to hell and face eternal death. The yellow stairs in the middle symbolizes the narrow path that leads us to the gate of heaven where Jesus is. The gate of heaven and the narrow path is drawn inside Jesus’s robes because through Jesus, we can walk on the right path, with Jesus, and enter heaven on the day of Judgement. I used watercolor paint to draw Jesus, and I also used the sparkly marker to decorate the door of gate of heaven. I created a picture of hell (black) at the bottom where Jesus does not exist and a stairway that leads to the Gate of heaven through Jesus.
