The English have successfully defeated the French armies and their allies of Indian tribes in the French and Indian War, from 1754-1763. The British were able to control most of America as a result of the war. However, Britain was in debt due to the war and decided that the Colonies should assist in paying on behalf of the British war debt. In order to raise revenue, the British Parliament passed legislation of the Stamp Act in 1765. The Stamp Act enforced purchasing tax stamps to buy paper. As a result of this legislation, the colonists were outraged. This new policy was very unwelcomed because it neglected the “Salutary Neglect” Act in which colonial taxes weren’t collected by the English. The book, America: A Narrative History, states that the …show more content…
As a result, these colonists were able to get a voice in the English Parliament; which was something they never had prior. Taxation without colonial representation was considered tyranny with the Stamp Act. However, newer methods of taxation have emerged. Followed were the Sugar Act and the Townshend Acts. Outraged, many Americans formed political groups which gained extreme popularity such as the Sons of Liberty and the Committees of Correspondence. Bostonians were very outraged as a reaction to the taxation methods imposed by the British. The people of Boston threatened and hurt many British officers who were trying to collect the taxes. Eventually, the British send troops into the city of Boston to guarantee protection for their officers. This event resulted into the Boston Massacre as the British soldiers shot upon angry Bostonian protesters which was first blood. The Tea Act of 1773 helped grant the East Indian Company a monopoly on tea importation. A group of Boston protestors disguised themselves as Indians, boarded a ship with crates of tea on it, and dumped those chests of tea into the harbor of Boston. This event became known as the Boston Tea
It was the Tea Act. This act stated that only the British East India Company could sell or transport tea. Members of parliament passed this act because many of them had stakes in the company. At the time the British India Company was going bankrupt. This act threatened all colonial businesses by creating a monopoly. In Boston, the colonists devised a plan to resist this act. Several colonists dressed as Indians to deceive the British. These colonists seized the imported tea and dumped it into the harbor. The colonists dubbed this “the tea party.” The British responded to these actions by creating four acts jointly called the Coercive Acts. These acts closed the Boston ports to all trade, increased power of Massachusetts governor, granted trials of royal officials in Massachusetts be tried elsewhere, and allowed the new governor rights to quarter his troops anywhere. These Coercive Acts only angered the colonists more. They have strengthened their non-importation of British goods. They have also begun the forming of local militia companies.
The Boston Massacre took place on March 5th, 1770. This historic event was caused because of an ongoing conflict between the British soldiers and the people of Boston. According to George Hewes account, “Crowds of artisans and laborers joined the elite in protesting British policies, although their differing points of view revealed the divisions within colonial society.” People were upset over the British passing the Towsend Act, which was a surplus of unpopular taxes. The people of Boston also resented the British troops, who were also looking for jobs.
In 1773, Parliament aroused the Americans by passage of the Tea Act. This act, designed to help the East India Company by making it cheaper for them to sell tea in America, was interpreted by Americans as a subtle ploy to get them to consume taxed tea. In Boston, in December 1773, a group of men dumped the tea into the harbor.
I believe that the Intolerable Acts had more of an effect on the colonists. I say this because after the Stamp Act was passed the colonists did things like boycott and protest. Although, after the Intolerable Acts the colonists all gathered together and decided they needed to make everyone aware of their suffering and declare freedom from British rule.
The Boston Tea Party happened on December 16, 1773. The sons of liberty boarded 3 ships and dumped tea into the Boston harbor. They did this because of the British oppression. The British said they would have to pay all the tea off or the harbor will be closed.
Stamp Act: basically required the colonists to pay a tax on every single paper document or products made out of papers (for example, dice and paper cards). This Act was passed without colonists’ approval, which is why the issue of Taxation without Representation within British Parliament became a controversial issue.
During this time period our young country was still trying to figure out the right things to do and trying to avoid the wrong things. On top of that the French and Indian War had just ended and Great Britain was broke. Some of the new laws and acts benefited the colonies, others made it even harder and even enraged the colonists. George Grenville passed act after act trying to get more money out of the people. The first was The Sugar Act. This tax ended up costing the colonies four times the amount they were actually getting from it. Trying to make up for this, he created The Stamp Act. Parliament passed this act on February 13th, 1765.
This was yet another taxation at American ports on things such as glass, white lead, paper, paint, and tea. The colonists were frustrated by yet another taxation without representation. They began smuggling in teas at a cheap price. This led the British officials to be placed in places, such as Boston, to restore order. The tension between the colonists and the British was obvious and inevitably led to fighting. In this case, The Boston Massacre.
The British Empire dramatically changed when Christopher Columbus located America. Countries were rushing to get a piece of the shiny new land they could conquer. No country wanted to be left behind on the road to colonization, the more they owned the more powerful they were. The French came and colonized central and northern America. The Dutch collected patchy parts of northern America and Spain got southern America (Keene et al, section 2).
The French and Indian War ended in 1763, and although England won, it left them in enormous debt. The solution was the Stamp Act, a tax on all paper goods. Enacted in 1765, the Stamp Act upset nearly every English colonist in America. This was one of the first times colonists resisted England and this renegation acted as a precursor to the revolution ahead. England was surprised because they didn't consider the Stamp Act as anything people wouldn't agree with and felt that the colonists were responsible for paying in return from the protection England provided them during the war.
The French and Indian War in 1754, left the British government in large debts. The war was known as the French and Indian War because thousands of Native Americans fought alongside the French. The British won the war thanks partly to the Americans, while they took over most of France’s northern territory. By 1764 the British had accumulated a national debt of 130 million pounds. The British decided, as a result of the debts, that they will take the people of the British colonies. This occurrence the Stamp Act. The Stamp Act wa a law that required all people that lived in the colonies, to pay a stamp tax on practically everything that was printed on paper including legal documents, bills of sale, contracts, wills, advertising, pamphlets, almanacs,
I walked by a family discussing about how to stop the new stamp act.”This new Stamp Act is going to hurt all the colonial family’s and they need to find a way to stop it the.” mother said.”But one family has to stand up and try to think of a way to stop this new stamp act.” said the father. “Not for them but for everyone because this can hurt everyone’s lives.” said the little boy.we need to meet up tonight and brainstorm ideas to help everyone get out of the stamp act.So they first to figure out as much information about the stamp act they can find.So they go to look for the information and bring it back to help them disscuss this crisis at hand. After they had got information they had shared it the first one was that what did the stamp act
France and Britain were fighting, and the war was now spreading to north america.Britans colinest wanted to take over
The Stamp Act, although repealed March 18th, 1766, increased tensions between England and the Colonies and inspired both Adams' anonymous essay in the Boston Gazette entitled “A Dissertation on Cannon and Feudal Law” and “'The Braintree Instructions' written by Adams, a document adopted by 42 Massachusetts towns, affirming the “unconstitutionality of taxation without
One of these acts was the Boston tea party. Only the east India company could sell tea to the colonies legally, therefore the British merchants could not make money on selling tea. The British government strongly believed that the colonist would buy the cheap tea and pay a big tax on tea. Many people decide to boycott drinking tea. About 1000 colonist decided to dress up as Mohawk Indians and throw tea into the bay. They threw thousands of pounds of tea overboard. This became known as the Boston tea party. The British government was furious, and if they found anyone who participated in these acts they would hang
