Gender roles put an idea into children’s brains about the way society dictates how men and women should or should not act. These stereotypes can be harmful, as they often lead to sexism and misogyny. While gender roles may deem what is appropriate for each gender, they can also set expectations of people in society, some of which can be unachievable. This can put a pressure on young children that can follow them through their education and career. Gender-based stereotypes are also dangerous in the sense that if someone refuses to conform to traditional gender ideals, most of the time, they are ridiculed and harassed.

From gender roles, we, the people of society, are able to determine whether someone identifies as a male or a female. Both biological and social factors tend to determine what gender roles a person takes on. However, there are also gender stereotypes, which are “the fixed and oversimplified beliefs about the ways in which men and women ought to behave” (Rathus, 2010). Often times, gender stereotypes are related back to the traditional beliefs of when women were responsible for staying home and being the caregivers and men were responsible for going out to work and bringing home the food, supplies, and money that the family needed (Rathus, 2010).

Feminist: the person who believes in the social, political, and economic equality of the sexes. Sexual stereotypes are deeply imbedded into today’s society. Ideals of the gender roles are passed down from generation to generation, creating a gap between what is socially acceptable for a woman to do and what is expected of a man. One thousand years ago humans chose dominance by physical capability, simply because it was essential for our survival, but the world has evolved. One thousand years ago physical strength was the most important part of survival for human beings. Men in general are physically stronger therefore it made sense to have a man lead. The world humans live in has evolved and is no longer run by the physically entailed, but by the most intelligent or creative(Adichie). Though this world has evolved, the gender expectations and stereotypes have stayed the same. Sexual stereotypes in America limit men and women to abide with,by the expectations of masculinity and feminism, create a sense of shame for women, and create a gap in today’s job industry.

Gender stereotypes are common in the United States today, even though many men and women have been working hard to defeat it. The task is made difficult however, when society in general implants the idea of gender roles into the mind of a child. Two authors, Judy Mann of The Difference and Bernard Lefkowitz of Our Guys face the issue of gender roles and stereotypes, and how they affect our lives today.

Living in 21st century United States, being a much more liberal and inclusive environment than prior decades, gender “roles” and their normalities are being severely questioned and challenged. Americans have defined and established gender stereotypes that have become a critical part of how we look at gender roles and create biases about each gender. Stereotypes assume people who 'belong ' to a group will appear, behave, look, speak or sound like others from that group. The values, norms, practices, behaviors and traditions associated with the group are shared by all members of the group. . This is a huge problem in todays society. Gender stereotypes are a set of expectations of what a girl or a boy should act and look like. While many people tend to stay in their respective stereotype, there are still many who objectify the stereotype and are usually judged for it. This has taken away the idea of being an individual.

Gender stereotypes are present in the United States today. Women are only supposed to act in feminine ways while men are only supposed to act in masculine ways. Women and men have different standards when comparing one another. Men and women have different roles that society says is more feminine or masculine. Gender stereotypes are present throughout any race. Race stereotypes are also a problem today and still have their own gender stereotypes with in their culture. When people act outside what society says those gender roles are, they are seen in a negative way. Society has determined what we consider to be acceptable definition of feminine or masculine. Throughout history, gender stereotypes have played a significant role in peoples lives.

Stereotypes are harmful for many reasons; one being that gender stereotypes, specifically, objectify and are demeaning to women (or anyone who identifies as a female). In my Stereotype Student Interview Protocol, Student #2 told me, “...people think that women are weak…are great at cleaning...and it is their job to take care of the children.” Another student also told me an anecdote on how teachers always chose the males to help them with certain tasks, as though it was a “man’s job” and that women are unable to do such a task. Comments and actions like

During school years, I wasn't like "other girls". No I'm not going to tell you about how I was different or I fell in love with the popular kid and he didn't even know I existed. I was just the girl who never got into the phase of make up. I was never dressed up in cute dresses, or was remotely interested in "girly toys" (other than Polly Pockets, I mean who didn't love those adorable mini rubber barbies?!). I woke up five minutes before the bus would come to my stop, throw on my sweatshirt and take my hair out of my braid and run. I never worried about getting up an hour early to make sure I had my make up on point (not that there is anything wrong with that at all, it's just not what I did). I was always told by the girls I went to school with about how lucky I was to not have to wake up early to get ready for school. I always thought that was kind of weird though since they were all cute enough to do the same thing I did. I didn't think they needed to go through the trouble.

When the subject of eating disorders comes up it is mostly teenage girls or women that are put in the spotlight. People focus on the modeling and advertising industries by calling them out for the unhealthy image they create for young women, even though it is well known that most if not all their images are photoshopped. The implied message of most advertisements raising awareness for eating disorders is that women are the only one that suffer from them. Based on the visualization of two ads- one from dove encouraging women to love their bodies and the other from NEDA (National eating disorder association) for a helpline both the of ads help to reinforce the false belief, that women are the only ones that suffer from eating disorders. But one aspect that people tend to overlook and that has not come to public attention until just recently is the rising number of cases in men and adolescent boys

Gender stereotypes are mostly taken for granted at a young age: girls are told to play with dolls and boys are told to play with trucks. But as children grow older they find themselves in a world where the reality of gender roles and stereotypes aren’t acknowledged, and the illusion of gender neutrality is commended. If gender roles are becoming more neutral, then it would follow that gender role stereotypes are also becoming more lax. However, in actuality this is not true.

My full name is Mariah Reistelle Wilkinson, and I grew up in Northeastern Nevada. From age 7 to 18, I raised every orphaned critter from newborn goats to cockatiels. In all my experiences, I have found that even non-human creatures are beautiful and intelligent things, with amazing capacities to love. Gender stereotypes surface from an early age, from the toys we’re told to play with as children to the type of behaviors we’re encouraged to display. These stereotypes paint an over generalized picture of the population to which they pertain to. They can be very damaging to a person especially when they are imposed on people who fall outside of the norm of the stereotype. One stereotype for example, is that men do not face rape or other domestic violence.

Despite various changes in the workforce, it is apparent that gender stereotypes are not extinct and are still very powerful generalizations. Through this reflection paper I hope to successfully analyze gender stereotypes and the impact they have on the workforce. Gender stereotypes influence our judgment and assessment, which ultimately leads to individuals treating women and men differently. As a society we continue to uphold a social structure that favors patriarchy and brands gender specific characteristics as opposed to removing gender from the equation and simply classifying leadership traits.

How women are perceived by others, and how women perceive themselves, impacts their leadership roles in the work place. Stereotypes and gender biases are themes women have been dealing with for centuries. How women are perceived by social medial and television have been influencing how they are treated by men, and how they view themselves when it comes to taking a leadership role in their organization. According to Omega Institute (2012), “The rapidly shifting landscape of new media and technology, including reality television and celebrity culture, continue to reinforce gender stereotypes” (p. 1). This leads to men still growing up viewing women as home makers versus bread winner. With more women entering leadership roles in the work place they lack the respect from men due to how these men have grown up to know the typical role of a man and woman. Men tend to feel belittled due to the gender stereotypes seen on television, and this leads to women struggling to succeed as a leader with the lack of support from their male counterparts. Lack of confidence with women in the workplace is also influenced and effected by how women are perceived in social media and television. According to Steele (2005), “Exposure to stereotypic commercials persuade women to avoid leadership roles” (p. 276).
